The inlays, sunburst finish, cut away sets the Gibson apart for me.

It sounded sweet with delicate treble tones - some of which is down to the rosewood b & s.

All sound great on this. The J45 is also a beast, as is the D18. The Taylor sounds more focused and precise. I have the Taylor which I bought in preference. It looks and feels different, easy to play.

Excellent comparison. Using a mahogany J45 would’ve been even better.

What guitar sounds the best is when u learn how to play! That's the best sounding guitar!

They should have had a mahogany j45 instead of the rosewood avant-garde

As an engineer; Taylors have always annoyed me to no end. Really nasty harmonics. Taylor fans cope and say "that's what I'm buying them for" without ever really listening to their guitars critically. Martins do a much better job, but tend to sound muted. Still, very rich low and mid, very enjoyable. Older, well-played Gibson acoustics are absolute magic. You have to *work* to make them sound bad. Unfortunately, very few people own them and it's hard to make an actual 1:1 comparison. Basically: If you're buying a new acoustic, regardless of intended genre/tone, Martin blows Taylor out of the water. If you want a guitar that will last you a lifetime and sound better every time you play it? Gibson, no question. It's funny, considering how horrible Gibson's electrics are.

If you are open-minded, you will find a guitar from each maker that you will like. None of the big 3 is standing still. They all want to fill a niche.

Always Martin, Taylor, Gibson. So boring. Gibson in acoustic, beuurk…Lowden, Larrivée, Furch, Dowina are great guitars.
