I have been lucky to have been around long enough to witness many incarnations of Hot Tuna and they just keep getting better and better-acoustic and electric. The addition of Barry over the last ten years or so adds another four dimensional window to Tuna's sound and in case one didn't notice, this rendition of Good Shepherd displays the craft of their musicianship rather well. Hot Tuna is a national treasure. Why they aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is unbelievable.

Very nice performance of one of my favorite Jefferson Airplane songs; one which I might have thought an acoustic version would fall short of the mark for lack of that signature electric riff. Yet, you guys pulled it off, and with a cool jam - quite a flourish!

Jack's website has nice tributes to Paul and Marty - And early Airplane female singer, Signe Anderson - who died the EXACT SAME DAY as Paul (weird, right?) Signe was replaced by Grace, as I've heard it, right after a double-bill concert of Grace, then with The Great Society, and The Jefferson Airplane (with Signe at the time) somewhere in 1966 (I don't remember the exact date, sorry!) Wikipedia says that Signe's last concert with the band was in October of '66, and a quick check showed that the only Airplane album she was on is "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" (Other than maybe some guest spots later on - I'm not sure what's out there in "unofficial" recordings!) Paul and Signe's can be found about halfway down this page: www.jackcasady.com/page/4/ and Marty's (written by Jorma) is still on the main page, a bit more than halfway down. www.jackcasady.com/ Jorma also did a nice writeup on Paul & Signe here: jormakaukonen.com/cracksinthefinish/?m=201601 And this is Marty's here, top of the page (with neat photos!): jormakaukonen.com/cracksinthefinish/?m=201809

Jorma! I was born 15 years after you - 12/23/55, and I grew up down the street from the Goodman brothers, Frank, Billy & Jon.... I left for school in D.C. about the same time Billy found Kimock. I use to hit the dive bars in Levittown every chance I got to hear those guys.... they played covers mostly back then, but they had a good sound. I would always chew on Frank’s ear between sets about you and Jack and a new sound - the Rev. Gary Davis... but Frank wasn’t really interested. Oh well. I bought a classical guitar for $25 and taught myself a lot of your acoustic songs from "The Orleans House" (sp?), and then life happened and I stopped playing. I met your cook @ The Himalayan Institute some years back and played some of your/The Rev’s stuff for him. He sent me one of your CD’s after he went back to your place in Ohio. His name escapes me now... He was a nice kid. Anywho, I see Billy and Steve finally found you. You had a big influence on my life. Thanks for bringing a whole generation your sound. Maybe we’ll meet some day. Best regards, Jonathan

Is there a better bass player than Jack? Maybe but his body of work with Jorma and topped off with playing perfect bass lines on Jimi Hendrix' "Voodoo Chile" from Electric LadyLand is nothing short of astounding. As an aside: Back in the Airplane days he always wore a thin headband visible only on his forehead then disappearing into his hair. People started saying it was actually a tattoo! Almost believable since it was always present on his forehead. Does anyone know the story of his bass guitar? It is an electric gold top and does sport the Les Paul signature found on Les Paul Standard model guitars. I met him once at a small club he had just played using that bass guitar .He handed it to me to look it over. I had only ever seen one and it was Jack's. I asked him why the Les Paul name was on a thinline style Gibson bass. He said, "I don't know"!

This one is the Epiphone signature model. No more Les Paul on it, it's been replaced by Jack Casady ! And it's a chance, it made this very rare model affordable... Now I've got mine :-)

Jack Bruce was a better than middlin' bass player. But Jack and Jorma formed the back bone of the Airplane's singular sound, as well as the "psychedlic" music of that era, at least the West Coast version of it. The first time I heard "3/5 of a Mile in Ten Seconds" off the Surrealistic Pillow album I knew "Yes! This is it!" No other sound like it.

Some will, some won't. I'm glad there is this song. Jorma, Jack and Barry do well here. Barry is especially impresssive here. By the way, "Blood-stained banner" is a gospel reference that Christians were supposed to "Hold up", not stay out ot the way of as Jorma has it. A very minor quibble on superlative song. versebyversecommentary.com/galatians/galatians-617/
@1999wharfrat
@1999wharfrat 8 жыл бұрын
The lyrics are "Stay out of the way of the blood-stained bandit", referring to satan. If you look at the three verses, each refers to staying away from satan. Nowhere in this song is the word banner used.

Maybe those kids are actually more open minded, and listen to both...and then some. Lowest common denominator might be a more open set of ears, having learned from their predecessors the mistake of a closed mind.

Like "The Dead" New Jersey used to have a huge Jorma Following, Whenever he used to play either in NY, Conn, Penn, or NJ we used to all pile into somebodies van, with just enough room for either kegs of beer or cases stacked to the ceiling. and then the rest of us. bouncing around in the back like old wood. We'd never miss his shows. Funny thing, (funny coincidence, not funny haha), is that everyone from those van trips, are now dead, except for me. Which really makes no sence, because back in those days if someone ate 2 ludes, I'd eat 5 just because I always figured, if 2 was good, then 4 was better. , I haven't heard of Jorma playing in Jersey in a long time.
