I learned as a child in the Greek Orthodox church, the phronema. I left in the church in the 70’s, as a rebellious teens. I went from one protestant church to another until my 60’s. But the phronema was always with me, I just could not give an explanation, and never felt it in any other church. I’m now committed once again to the Orthodox faith of my youth. So wonderful to be home and at peace. Thank you for this.

Thank You! As a Protestant, this is very revealing of the dissatisfactions I have with my own denominational ‘system’. The disparity between belief and actions, the constant justifications in spite of being justified in Christ, the many many ‘To me…’ statements prior to an individualistic interpretation or view. It is as if Heaven has become a democracy. I was blessed to be born into a Christian home and very much appreciate the gracious end comments made by EC regarding having a good start in the Faith. I will be reading her books. It is 2022 and the Western world has gone bat crazy - and along with it much of the Church. The Orthodox Phronema beckons…

It was great sin that finally brought me to the understanding of Christ’s love through the Orthodox lense! This is HUGE for me … as an ex-Catholic and Protestant, tho I am VERY grateful for the journey … the image of an angry God made me run away every time I fell. Finally my priest lovingly commanded me to come regularly and TAKE communion … “What? Me a sinner??!!” Yes, he said. Now my feet are on a different path because my heart has been loved by my God all through the sacraments! So appreciative for the talk Dr Jeannie! You have spoken at my church in Roseville, CA and I sure hope you’ll return one day soon.

With regard to the "Messianic Christians" I lived a couple decades in Pasadena, very close to the Fuller Seminary, one of the largest Protestant Seminaries in the U.S. For nearly 25 years I would spend my Saturday mornings at a Protestant bookstore which supplied most of the Protestant ministers and seminarians in the area. Aside from seeing and hearing the Protestant biases mostly about Catholics, sometimes although less on the radar Orthodoxy, I also met a couple of founders of the "Messianic Christian" movement in the 1960s. There was one employee who was Catholic, and after almost a year of hearing him greet this man as "Rabbi" I inquired, he told me he was the Pastor of a Messianic church. One day as I was looking at the section of Catholic, Orthodox and Jewish books, he approached me, asking if I was a Messianic Jew. I replied that I was raised in a Sephardic family, and that I am now a Catholic, and when In Pasadena go to the Latin Mass at a parish locally, and when visiting family in the San Bernardino area I go to a Byzantine Catholic parish. At first, he was flustered and appeared angry, but I kept on the conversation, saying I've heard you referred to as Rabbi, how is it that you are shopping and paying for things with cash on the Sabbath? His response was that he was a "Messianic Rabbi" as the conversation progressed it became clear that his command of Hebrew was limited as was his understanding of Judaism. It would seem that he and a few others who were founders of the Messianic Jewish movement were mostly raised non-religious Jews, in secular modernist homes, became Christian through Protestant evangelization or marriage to Protestant women. While they did incorporate a minimum of Jewish practices in their new Protestant lives, because of questions by their new co-religionists, most knew little, and over time learned a bit more here and there, mostly from attending Fuller Seminary, (Judaism through Evangelical Protestant eyes) According to him most of his congregation were raised Protestant who were attracted to the ritual aspect of Judaism but did not want to convert to Judaism or be circumcised. So while as Dr. C mentioned Messianic Jews as being Jewish converts, it would seem many congregations are from Secular Jewish converts, but the majority are Protestants who are attracted by a misguided interest in Ritual.

Do you can’t say we are only ones that have kept it …. Miind you I will always be a Eastern Orthodox I was married to a Muslim and would not changed and my children baptized on Eastern Orthodox but our church has changed the archbishops also majority sold themselves off like Gerasimos in San Francisco. 'm enjoying this talk a lot, and I do understand that the path of going too much into theology or of discussing directly the mysteries might have it's dangers, but people like Jay Dyer, (who I think the lecturer is criticizing around 1h 50') are converting a lot of people to Orthodoxy, and them to this kind of content.
@Trisagionfilms2 жыл бұрын
I think Eugenia is saying that people who aren't equipped to discuss faith and high theology should have some experience and training before doing so. I don't think she's singling anyone out but rather referring to a general trend online. When you see people debating and arguing about Energies hypostasis and all other manners of very, very high-level theological topics, they should be trained and prepared to discuss them. The other issue with some people online is that they tend to like the concept of Orthodoxy; still, you can see from their behavior that it's only on an intellectual level. That, too, is a big problem.

It's problematic because all of those ethnic groups have the same phronema. So the term being Greek doesn't mean this religion is called "Greek Orthodoxy" but rather "Orthodox christianity" because it supersedes all ethnicities.

Good talk, thanks! After "looking for the early Church" I converted to Catholicism from Baptist and got hammered with Augustine this and Augustine that for several years (by the priest-Catholic people are very loving and kind for the most part. The priest was mean to everybody). Who was Augustine? So I started researching. This led me to Orthodoxy. I still haven't converted (it's a little embarrassing to convert twice) but I know the original Church, the only one, Holy, catholic and Apostolic Church, is the Orthodox Church. I still don't have the phrenomia ( I tend to pedantically correct errors and am not all that loving) but I'm on the Way. Justin Martyr was from the first century, not the 700's. He wrote the description of the Eucharist in the Church "service" in 150 AD. And here is a history, if you like Romanides, of the Frankish takeover of the Latin church around the 800's, when Charlemagne was crowned by Pope Leo. The Franks (a Germanic Tribe) were heretics and eventually replaced the old Roman Bishops and Pope with Frankish military men to serve as bishops. This drastically changed the teachings of the Roman Catholics, although "innovations" were already starting in ;the 700's. www.romanity.org/htm/rom.03.en.franks_romans_feudalism_and_doctrine.01.htm

One could say that the Catholic innovation and instability began before the Schism. The Filioque began in the 8th Century. Changing something so central and for unknown reasons.
@Trisagionfilms Жыл бұрын
The Filioque began much earlier, and we know why, actually. It started in Spain by the Orthodox there to combat the Arian Franks. It's a complicated thing, but essentially, yes, the cracks began in the 8th century, but it wasn't a full blow schism until the 11th century.
@charlesiragui2473 Жыл бұрын
@@Trisagionfilms Fascinating that the Filioque would have begun in Spain as we know some other important things were happening there in the 8th Century... There is some interesting historical research going on right now regarding the origins of Islam and much of it points to the Arabs initially bringing a form of anti-trinitarian Christianity with them, with the Prophet Muhammad emerging later through a kind of myth building process and a reinterpretation of the messianic title Praised One (ie Jesus) as an actual name. This is grounded on evidence from coins and from the Dome of the Rock, the earliest artifacts of this movement. In any case, it would seem that the Arabs and Arian Visigoths ruling Spain may have been closer theologically than we had previously thought. And this may help account for the relatively quick adoption of Arabic and eventually Islam in the Visigothic population. But back to the Filioque. Why would adding this have been perceived as necessary in the face of Arianism? I would think that "Light of Light, True God of True God" would be the decisive passage. But I have never found much information about Germanic Arian practices (common prayer? rituals? priesthood?), even though this culture war lasted from essentially the 5th Century into the 8th Century, some 300 years.
@Trisagionfilms Жыл бұрын
When the Franks (who were Arians, believing that The Son was created and lower than the Father) invaded Spain in the mid 500’s, the Orthodox Christians of Spain inserted the Filioque into the Creed of Faith in order to protect the equality of the Son with the Father.
@charlesiragui2473 Жыл бұрын
@@Trisagionfilms And I am seeing references to the adoption of the Filioque at the Third Council of Toledo in 589, when the Visigothic King Reccared I adopted Catholicism. So the connection to rejection of Arianism there is very clear. I still find the importance mysterious, probably again because there is so little information on Arianism. I have always thought of Arianism as specifically rejecting the divinity of Jesus (Jesus as wonder-working superman). But I presume from this that Arianism had specific thinking on the Holy Spirit as well.

I think that the eating of the apple question does take on the idea that it was the woman's mindset (phronema) that caused her to be tempted. So I don't think it was very off subject, just very sensitive for a woman to admit possibly ?
@karenbartlett13072 жыл бұрын
The woman was deceived. The man was tempted. It's in Romans 5:12-19. The ancestral sin in the fault of Adam, not Eve. That's why Christ could be "born of a woman" and remain sinless. You must admit that women are more naive than men, more easily deceived, that is. That's one reason why they are supposed to be in subjection to their husband.

I came to faith in Protestantism 3 years ago, and am now converting to Orthodoxy. I occasionally talk with the leader of that Protestant group and I notice very clearly how he has this particular guilt-based mindset, which ironically he keeps projecting onto Orthodoxy, because he's so stuck in this mode of guilt and punishment that he can't imagine a Christianity that doesn't deal with it. But every time I try to point out that it's his westernized frame of mind that makes him think that way, he argues that there are many types of Protestantism so I can't generalize it. I can't get him to notice that the guilt-punishment paradigm really is a universal mode of thinking in Protestantism, inherited from Roman-Catholicism. The only exceptions that I know of are the groups that are so liberal that they are practically atheists. It's also rather ironic that he thinks that pointing out how Protestants believe all sorts of different things is the way to get me back. That's exactly what convinced me to switch.

Yes, Western Christians need to allow more room for mystery. We have lots to learn from the East. But it goes both ways. The early Church didn't avoid defining doctrinal statements- what about the Nicene Creed? The Fathers used Greek philosophical reasoning to solve doctrinal problems, both deductive and inductive. Catholic theology is a living tradition that balances insights from theologians, popular devotion and the Magisterium. In contrast, the Orthodox churches, lacking a magisterial element, cannot address developments such as artificial contraception and in vitro fertilization in a coherent way. Dr. Constantinou acknowledges that the Orthodox liturgy as celebrated now probably differs from that of St Paul. Therefore, Orthodox Christianity has changed. And it has also changed in other ways. For instance, many of the Eastern Fathers attest to the authority of the Bishop of Rome to resolve disputes which many Orthodox Christians now deny. Similarly, several Eastern Fathers affirmed the Immaculate Conception of the Theotokos. For instance, St. John Damascene said: “O most blessed loins of Joachim from which came forth a spotless seed! Oh glorious womb of Anne in which a most holy offspring grew!” (Homily 1). Yet since the Catholic Church confirmed the Immaculate Conception, many Orthodox Christians have turned against this aspect of tradition. Why? Regarding unity, there is a patchwork of dioceses across the US so that Greek Orthodox, Antiochian and Russian Orthodox jurisdictions overlap, with the faithful sometimes moving from one to the other. How is that unity? The variety of spiritualities in the Catholic Church is a sign of life. Did God create one species of life or many? Did he make all people alike or with great variety? In the same way, God gives a variety of spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 12: 4-11). Rediscovering the Jewish roots of our faith is a way to affirm, not deny, the work of Christ. On the contrary, it is a great mystery to see how God is bringing Jews and Christians closer together as we approach the Parousia. Some Orthodox Christians may find it harder to see this work of the Holy Spirit because they fixate on what God has done in the past. Ultimately, we need each other. A Short Story of the Antichrist by Vladimir Soloviev covers this ground insightfully. Let's continue learning more about our faith from each other, avoiding the trap that we have nothing more to comprehend.

Thank you for having uploaded this lecture. Though I still have one major misunderstanding. If sin is not an offense to God, why do we ask him for his mercy? And why is there a Hell if it's not a punishment for our lack of repentance from the offenses made to God?

'Thousands of Spirituality,' applications of Charity, according to the charism of the Holy Spirit, but One Lord! Do not sin against the Holy Spirit. The Spiritual Orders you criticized have produced SAINTS.

You mentioned following the traditions of Saint Paul in the letter to the Corinthian church what about what he says about women not being teachers?
@Trisagionfilms Жыл бұрын
So Eugenia can't respond to you. Or at least she does not see these comments so that she can respond. But St. Paul was often keeping with the cultural norms of his time. He sometimes mentions that women can prophesy in Church. Also, abbesses and the wives of priests are often teachers. And in the ancient Church, deaconesses tended to the catechizing of women. Ultimately, we don't just take something like this as an absolute rule; everything needs to be taken in context, and we also need to leave room for opinions. Saints, just like everyone(after all, they are human) had opinions, and that doesn't mean we take their opinions as being always inspired by the Holy Spirit. So throughout Church history, women have been teachers. Okay, maybe it didn't look like what Professor Eugenia is doing here, but there is plenty of evidence that they did and never stopped. Even if, at times, it might have only been abbess' teaching their nuns in monasteries. But as I said before, priests wives have often helped the priest teach people. My 5th-grade teacher was a priest's wife; she was a wonderful human being and taught us, among other things, theology and prayers and how to sing them. So this has never been a hard rule, far from one.

Also, St Paul's thoughts on "women being teachers" are foremost in the liturgical (and pastoral) context. He didn't mean that women shouldn't bear witness to Christ our God or that they shouldn't teach religious things to their children, or that the career of teacher would be forbidden for them etc. I mean, such life is literally impossible if we are to take Christian faith seriously, and there were no women teachers in the Roman Empire overall (not even sure if such a career in itself existed yet).

I'm 45 and also Greek Orthodox, I remember they would tell me oh ya the one with the crazy rituals, I would always tell them the Bible and everything I was taught was from when Jesus gave the Apostles and taught in my language, so I think you have it wrong. I remember saying it young, I thank God for my family taking me and teaching me about my way of life. We had a great church, Greek school, and now do Pasca in all languages. Thank you for your great video btw.

it's a real conundrum, and here I am learning Orthodox theology on the internet. In fact, if it weren't for the internet, I wouldn't be Orthodox now for seven years. All of this has gone through my mind. Reading the bible 20 times and St. Ambrose of Milan and St. Basil etc. didn't make me think salvation lies in hanging out with elderly Lebanese and Greek women to adopt their attitude. Who knew? (The Holy Spirit helps a little bit and Orthodoxy is Paradoxical alright🤫)

You'd be surprised what you can learn from the simple and humble. People who don't know much theology but live the Church organically are often full of wisdom.

Also, not only that ( about women ) but Adam, as a man, failed.to.protect eve and he even watched her sin ( eat of the fruit ) and did not stop her, he simply watched. He should have protected her. They BOTH sinned.

Is it possible to incorporate the idea of being imprisoned or caught up in the legal system as one model of the consequences of getting off the path? In that model, the remedy is to redeem, buy back, pay the price. Point being, understand this model as one aspect of the salvific activity of the loving heart of God. I hear the Orthodox position.
