Hi Becky, My husband has been farming his whole life, so I asked him about your nitrogen/bean root question and he said that the beans take approx 98% of the nitrogen from the roots to mature, so they leave an estimated 2% behind. To organically add nitrogen to your soil, early every spring, when the ground is still frozen, my husband underseeds the winter wheat field with red clover and it's the red clover that leaves nitrogen rich nutrients behind to help fertilize the next crop. Hope this helps☺

Yes, the only way to really add a surplus with beans, is to not actually grow them for harvesting, but only as like a cover crop, so you wouldn't let them mature, & you would want to incorporate the entire plants back into the soil. But still, leaving the roots in the ground- even if only 2% of the amount of nitrogen in the entire the plant, is better than nothing.

@@AcreHomestead also, even though they are at the end of their life, they still look to be iron deficient. The dark green veining g & light color of the leaves usually means iron deficiency. Laura from Garden Answer recommends chelated iron, because I think it's more readily available for the plants to use, however I've not been able to find any products in a small amount/ that didn't cost an arm & a leg. I know for flowers, in containers, PW has a water soluble Fertilizer that has chelated iron. I only use it in containers because it's not organic but I did use it once on a veggie bed once where I had some very sad looking plants that I really wanted to save, & ot did work very well.

Your parents are the best! What a blessing! I'm 61 yrs old, and I still help my children. It's not as easy as I get older. My grown children don't even notice that I'm growing older. It's definitely a challenge to work hard along with them, and they still don't notice that I struggle more. That is because I push on, I still want to help, and I refuse to show weakness. I really feel it later, but to be with my children and grandchildren, it's all worth it.

Just so you know for next year, there’s no reason to plant your potatoes that deep. 6 inches will work and your newly emerging potato plants won’t have to expend so much energy just getting to the sunshine, therefore they’ll have a little more for the potatoes. Plus you won’t have to dig so deep to harvest them. Less soil disturbance too! 😊

Fun fact! The nitrogen fixation by the black beans is actually a symbiotic relationship between nitrogen fixing bacteria and the plant. Where the plant gives energy in form of organic acids and by "buffering" oxygen(which is important for the nitrogen fixing process in the bacteria), and the bacteria provides nitrogen.

Hello there ! Just a few things from a potatoe grower in Ireland : make sure your potatoes stay in the dark as they'll get green and you can't eat them as they become poisonous then. And those tiny "potatoes" you see growing on the big ones are seed potatoes that are not edible, and it happens because they stayed too long in the ground. Hope that helps ^^

Your daddy is so sweet!! It’s got a feel good to know that most of the food that you eat is from your very own garden. Can’t get any fresher than that.😮 happy to see you have some help! God is really blessed you with a great harvest so far this year.😮

I sure wish my dad was willing to come just spend time with me, or help. They’re 45 minutes away and thats a bit too far for them. It makes me so happy to see your family together. LIFEGOALS- we’re homeschooling our kids, and we do grow most of our own food, not nearly as much as you, but I hope to have this sort of relationship with my kids. What a blessing.

I follow Laura on Garden Answer. She has the most magnificent gardens. She has about 4 acres of plantings in her yard. She plants everything. Everything she grows is just beautiful. She tells you what she uses . Very helpful.

I cannot put fully into words my emotions ... so happy to see the beautiful harvest, and seeing your parents working with you is bittersweet (my own have been heaven's residents for a couple years now and makes me miss them a little more) but happy to see a bit of them in your folks. You are so very blessed, Becky ❤❤❤

Your father seems to truly enjoy helping you treasure hunt. I love it! Great memories. Your first year was a success. I also am commenting from the video you made peach salsa and tomatoe salsa to freeze. I prefer to raw/ cold pack my diced tomatoes.

You amaze me, Becky! There is no way that I would go through the fidliness of growing my own potatoes. It’s easier to buy them from a local farmer.❤❤

Digging them up is half the fun! For sure it's cheaper to buy them :)

But they are no where near as fun to purchase over digging. And planting potatoes are so cheap and potatoes at least in Texas have gotten expensive!
