ACRYLIC EXTENSION - SOAK OFF VS FILE OFF

Hello, guys.
In today's video, we are going to be conducting a little experiment to answer the big question. File off or Soak Off? What's the best method?
So, first of all, you're gonna need some aluminium foil in order to conduct this experiment. So I'm gonna tear a strip of that off and then I'm gonna split it into five so there's a piece for each finger. So Dina has a full set on today and they're a bit blue because she uses a lot of blue hair dye, so we are going to file off one of the hands and then use the soak off method on the other to find out which method is the best!
I'm gonna first get rid of the stones and old design so that I have a nice smooth surface to work with and then we are going to cut the length down on all of the nails so we are going to watch the hyponychium when we do that because we don't want to cut into it so we don't wanna go too short with these and then we are gonna use the electric file to get rid of any bulk on the nails.
Next, for the hand I'm going to soak off I'm gonna take some lint free pads, soak them in acetone, rest them on the base of the nail and then wrap them up in tin foil. So, whilst they are soaking I am going to do the other hand so I'm gonna get my electric file and attach a rounded medium bit and we are going to come down the nails gently. You need to make sure that when you're doing a file off, you move constantly and never stay in one spot because if you do that you'll end up creating a lot of heat and that is no good for the client.
So, after we've brought the bulk right down, we are going to go in with a hand file and file off the rest of the product and then we are gonna lightly buff them just to smooth them out a bit. I'm them gonna lightly wipe over them with the gel residue wipe off solution just to clean them up and finally we are gonna finish with a little bit of cuticle oil.
Finally, with the soak off hand, we are going to remove the noil and the cut away the spongy layer using a metal tool and then we are going to file off the rest of that product., buff over the nails, wipe over them with a little bit of gel residue wipe off solution and then to finish we will add a little bit of cuticle oil. I prefer to file off as much as i can, and then soak off the last bit when it gets very close to the nail, I find there's less chance of damaging the nails

Yep, exactly. You shouldn't need to file the natural nail at all- just keep soaking anything that won't easily wipe off the nail (not scrape! Wipe!) until it comes away easily. Never scrape from the base or the natural nail on to the acrylic (or gel) because you can get under the edge and pull it away causing damage- only ever scratch the top of the extension to remove the top layers of it before re-soaking anything that remains, so you can avoid filing away layers of your actual nail plate. I'd always, to avoid filing the natural nail, recommend filing them down as much as possible first and then soaking off the rest, I would never, ever recommend filing right down to the natural nail!

I mean,, you shouldn't even need to buff unless your tech was aggressive and filed your natural nails before applying, roughing up the surface, instead of just gently buffing the shine- and then I recommend finding a new tech lol

Same! I hate having to soak for too long on myself because I have really dry sensitive skin and the acetone is so harsh. Better yet, I'll start with a clear base when I'm starting a new set and I'll just file down to the clear each time, remove any lifted bits and just leave a thin layer of clear to protect my nails when I don't have full extensions on.

Before I started doing my own nails; every salon I went to would pry off the old set with an unused tip. Hurt like hell!! Also when getting a new set would take a course sanding band to my natural nail for prep. I was ignorant to that fact it CAN be done safer and painless. I will never go back to a salon like that again!

Becky Jones I work at an Asian shop and have for 8 years, unfortunately that’s the way they operate 😞 I “myself” have clients come in that LOVE me because I do nails the right way and some clients HATE me because I won’t “pop off” acrylic nails with a tip. American nail shops are mostly Vietnamese and they all do nails like this in my experience after 8 years.

I just make sure I remove a little more bulk before I soak off and It only takes about 5 minutes with the foil wraps. I prefer soaking off because I try to avoid a file touching my natural nails as little as possible.

Thank you Kirsty, another helpful and interesting video. I've always wondered about filing v soaking for nail removal. Personally I prefer soaking. It may be more boring, but somehow seems gentler on the nails. Also, I've seen a lot of damage done with over-enthusiastic use of a drill file. I think I'll be sticking with the soaking.

I remove the bulk, then soak off with acetone and cotton balls wrapped in foil, and use a cuticle pusher to remove the melted acrylic. Sometimes I use my hand drill and sometimes I use a nail file to finish to the natural nail. (This is for my personal nails.)

I have a bowl you fill up with hot water, then pour the acetone in the wells and soak the nails in the wells...the acrylic is off in around 10 mins because the hot water warms the acetone. It's great! 💅👌🏼

DominosAndHearts exactly the reason I’m teaching myself. I don’t have any good nail salons near me. They charge a fortune but they always lift, are uneven, crooked, the gems fall off as soon as I leave, and they damage my natural nails with over filing and pulling them off with nail tips 🤦🏽‍♀️

to be fair most of mine start falling off when it comes to do a refill so its easy to chip off the non contacting area, but the one time I went to a pro to do it she sat there poking at it with a stick until it came off, then she didnt push back the cuticles, she didnt prep the nail.. all in all crap job.. Im no pro but next to her I do a better job of nail work, only thing Im crapper at is my dominant hand cos obviously on someone else you can use the good hand on both

Since you asked, I soak off both sculptured acrylic and gel polish on natural nails. I file gel polish off acrylic nails usually using the medium grit sandpaper on my e-file.

After first times soaking off I overdid my impatience by pulling off the last bits along thin layer of my natural nails which resulted in thin natural nails. I begun filing off them ever since and even got e-file after destroying few hand files. I will soak off again when I will be taking off all my nails down to natural because I plan giving tips a try (I've used forms since I begun) and return to gel until I get new acrylic product set in (I do find acrylics attached longer even if I do longer nails and am clumsy with laying it on).

When your taking off the jewels with the nail nippers you can use your other thumb to put on top of the jewels and the nail nippers and they won’t go flying anywhere. That’s what we do at the Foot & Ankle Surgeons I work for.

I would file them off. But personally being a gellover I file off that also. I know that gel is a lot softer than acrylic. I can not stand filing off my nails so because acrylic is so hard, it is a huge reason for me not to use it on a regular basic.

Lori Fisher its not nail polish is gel polish with top coat. Acetone won’t soften it unless you file it a bit before adding acetone

I've done soak off and file off. I prefer file off unless I'm changing product from acrylic to gel or gel to acrylic. Then I'll file as far as I can then I soak. It works well for me. I'm always so careful the I move while filing so I don't end up with heat 😰. Plus I'm very careful not to file my natural nails.

Caroline Burgess Most of the time that’s only because the acrylic keeps the oils in your nail beds were they would usually dry out and so your nails are temporarily soft.

It also depends for me I do both lol. I prefer to do regular infills/design change but when I do have to take a set off, it depends on the time I have on whether I soak off or file off. Sometimes I feel like just sitting there waiting is awkward especially when you don't talk much haha

Ok I need some advice!!! I do all the prep for my nails before applying acrylic! I use primer and everything and good glue!! And I file and apply the acrylic really nicely. In the last 20 years, there have been so many of those popup fingernail places, they don't seem to care if they damage your nailbed or not! Even to a natural nail that's never had more than regular polish on them, they love using those efiles to ruff up the surface! They use them too excessively. It's hard around where I live to find a decent place. I want to be able to do my own nails and I know I'm not that great with acrylic. lol Any suggestions? Thank you for all your videos.

Karen Presley I started to learn by using gel to build up my nails but as soon as Naio brought out the Acrygel I’ve not stopped using it! It’s a gel like consistency but hardens almost as hard as Acrylic! Amazing stuff!

Me too. I do my own now. Hate the monomer smell in my home and had problems getting the correct powder liquid ratio. I started with doing silk nails. Then difft alternatives. Then i got into dualforms. Then polygel. Then started doing bails with polygel without dualforms. Then i started using hard gel and not buying polygel anymore. Make my own. Using tips and sculpting with reusable forms. Im so happy im doing my own. When i find scentless monomer, i will continue practicing using acrylic

For me it depends on how I feel 😂 cause sometimes I wanna be a lazy and juts clip and file off 😎 But if the client is having an overlay straight after I soak them off to avoid minimum use of filling plus I get you have a good old chin wag with a pot of Yorkshire tea ☕️

Try use our Maximum Adhesion or Medium Speed acrylic liquid to allow it to set at a slower pace :) Also, the temperature of the environment you are working in has an impact on the product's setting rate, as working in a warm room will make your acrylic set faster. :)
