@brittanyrocket7 жыл бұрын
Ever since I started watching Suzies video I refuse to let anyone do my nails other than me, but I can tell you a few things I've learned. 1) Look for licenses. They should be displayed. You should see them right at check in where there's a register. I've also seen people have their most recent inspection document there. A salon I've gone to since I was a child (for my hair) keeps a book right on the check in desk and each license is in one of those little clear sleeves so anyone can see it if they want. Also when you're checking a place out the floor should be clan. the pedicure tubs as well. Any sign of dirtyness is a red flag. 2) It shouldn't smell like chemicals. Monomer doesn't always smell good, but there's a VERY cheap kind of monomer that smells atrocious. It contains methyl methacrylate(MMA). I don't want to get into the chemistry but long story short but it's not good for humans. It's also a poor product, it doesn't adhere well to the nail plate and nail techs who use it will shred the hell out of your with the rough buff\bit so that it's got a really rough finish and the MMA will stick. It is also VERY hard, so if you jam your nail instead of the acrylic breaking the nail can break. It also doesn't dissolve in acetone like good ones will. That's why they have to pry it off of your finger. Oh and finally the FDA has been telling salons since the 70's NOT to use it. You'll know MMA is being used because it's going to be an intense and HARSH chemical smell. Most salons you should only be able to smell the monomer RIGHT when you're getting your nails done or sometimes not at all. I buy my Monomer from Mia Secret which is made in the USA. There are a hundred other ones out there but another way to know you're not getting MMA is part 3. 3) Everything should be labeled,.EVERYTHING. If you pick up a bottle anywhere you should be able to read what is in it. You should be able to ask about ingredients and get an answer too. If a salon doesn't have this, LEAVE. A friend of mine has a nut allergy and I took her to a spa for her birthday. I made sure to ask the salon questions before I booked and sure enough 1 of their products had almond extract in it and I made sure to remind them repeatedly not to use products with any sort of nut in it when I booked and the day we arrived. I know it makes us seem annoying or undesirable clients but an allergy oversite can kill someone. So ask questions and if they give you push back or make you feel bad, leave. 4) Every time I've had a bad nail experience the nail didn't look at my nails. When a lady I met actually took my nails and looked at them I was surprised. Part of what they teach you is to inspect the nails. They should be mentally looking for your cuticle health, do you bite your skin, if there could be an infection. They will also wear gloves and other sanitization things and you are within your rights to ask them to clean anything, but I notice now that a lot of spots will do a wipe and clean right before you sit down. I think that's so we feel better. Things like athletes feet CAN be spread in a salon if people aren't careful. Also, my fav nail tech is always giving me little bits of knowledge about how to keep my nails healthy while she works. It's partially chatter, but also she wants me to have good nails too. 5) As Suzie said in this video, you don't have to REMOVE the whole acrylic. The nail underneath is baby smooth soft and if a bad tech rips the nail off and immediately starts buffing those soft nails it's going to do damage. If they are using the Suzie method above they're going to remove enough acrylic to do a new coat, but leave a thin layer to coat your natural nails. When you go back to your salon after 2-4 weeks you're asking for a FILL, not a replacement. If you use acetone to soak the nail off (maybe they broke or you work in a job that is rougher on your hands), give your nails a few days of rest and relaxation before you go to your salon. Cause like Suzie says oxygen is what makes your nail harden. 6) The saw motion while filing is another thing to look for. Think of those old movies with the two guys pulling a big saw back and forth baaaack and forth. That's BAD in a nail technicians handbook. Notice how Suzie is using the bit? She keeps the bit steady and moves her finger against the bit for more control. If you're using a file instead, you want the nail tech to file from the outside in and only 1 direction at a time. That saw motion weakens nails and leads to peeling. AND FINALLY! You get what you pay for. Generally, a full set is $30-35 minimum in the states. Anything above $60 for a regular set is price gouging. If they are doing complex details or designs then expect a little more in price. However $20 for a full set of tips is a sign that they are cutting corners somewhere. They might not be cutting a corner in the product though. Last year the state of NY awarded Asian Nail techs millions of dollars in back pay for shops in NYC that had been paying Nail techs criminally low wages and taking their tips. So making sure you're in an above board salon is not just good for your nails, but you don't want to be making someone rich while the man or woman working on your hands has been trafficked into this country to work for $1 an hour. Even though the state took those bad places to court and won, most of the nail salons ended up closing and those men and women didn't get their money for 10, 15, 20 years of work. So choosing a place that pays its workers well is REALLY important.

I got into doing my own acrylic nails 1) because it's cheaper when you do it yourself, 2) it's fun, and 3) because every salon I went to in my area removed acrylics by clipping and prying them off in chunks! It hurt so bad! And they ruined my nails. So I learned a better way to do it and now just do them myself. :) I'm not a professional but I plan to go to school soon and apply for my license.

Got to say you are such a natural teacher, I've only recently started using polygel to lengthen and protect my nails since they're so thin and prone to breaking due to health issues, and I learned how from your vids and a couple of other KZbin nail experts. I've went from being ashamed and angsty about my nails to now being able to be normal and even proud of them. Your vids showing and your walkthroughs on everything are a life saver not only on the pocketbook but in giving me a hobby that I am able to do, I have arthritis, but that I can find enjoyment and pride in. I've already made a playlist for nail vids alone that I can refer back to when needed and so far most of them have been yours, I look forward to learning more from your future vids.👍👍👍

I've known people who always had acrylic nails for years. They just keep refilling them and they've told me that it's been a while that they saw their natural nails. I don't think that's a healthy habit to do.
@PhuongTran-dk4bh8 жыл бұрын
+Stephanie Martins Westover you should get a refill every 2 weeks
@laurelmaha62118 жыл бұрын
+Stephanie Martins Westover think about this: your nails are layers dead keratin, and don't have lungs, so they don't need to *breathe* as people say they do. Basically you can keep your nail health if you can keep up with your nail enhancements. If they start lifting and water and other gunk gets under, that's a good way for bacteria and fungus to grow. If you get the enhancements maintained every 2-3 weeks, your technician will ensure that there's still a solid seal over the nail plate (and you won't have nail problems). If you don't feel like you want to keep going back for regular fills, then that would be the time to get the enhancements removed by a professional to keep the nail healthy. does that make sense?
@JessicaReinke8 жыл бұрын
I was always told you should onto get them filled twice then after that you need a new set because bacteria can grow if there's any separation between the acrylic and natural nail.

For clients, I let them choose removal method. For myself, drilling off the acrylic makes my nail beds sore so I only soak. Here's a tip for faster removal: As Suzie mentioned, heating up the acetone makes it work faster. Keeping it warm is the real trick. I set my glass bowl on a heating pad for this process. The warmed acetone melts the acrylic super fast!

I've had acrylic nails since I was 15 (now 28)... every year or two my nail tech tells me it is time to get a new set but that I should have the acrylic completely removed and go "naked" for at least 2 weeks. I HATE doing this because my nails are naturally so thin, let alone the filed down nail bed under the acrylic and so when I do this my nails look TERRIBLE and feel terrible. I really love this option because it is removing the weight and letting the nails "reset" but still keeping them protected. Thank you for sharing!

how damaged are your nails when you get acrylics removed?
@melissa79559 жыл бұрын
It depends on how you remove it

I had my acrylics on for 8 weeks , huge mistake ! they outgrew , looked horrible and as they grew out my skin started growing over the fake nail adapting it as its own ! pulling it off was not only horrible but made my nails thin bumpy and disgusting ! I'm never going to do that again unless I have too !

Would acrylics ruin my nail? Never had my nails done before but would like to. My natural nails are quite long and thick x
@NailCareerEducation8 жыл бұрын
Acrylic does not damage your natural nail, so long as it's correctly applied and removed. I've been wearing acrylic for 30 years, and my natural nails are healthy. You need to find a good nail tech who cares about your nails. Search around and get references - don't just walk into a salon. And ask to get a single nail done, one of your busy nails, and test it out for 2-4 weeks to see how it wears.

Thank you so much! You really helped me! I got Acrylic nails 3 weeks ago and I’m so scared because today I have to get them removed. As I watched your video I was calm and relaxed knowing that they weren’t going to rip my nails off😂🤣😅. Especially since yesterday I was playing and I made a quick movement and scraped my nail in the couch and ripped it right off, it really hurt and I thought the nail place was going to rip them off too! So now I’m relaxed and a lot more comfortable! Thank you so much! You have no idea how important this was to me!!!

@sylviestiles7 жыл бұрын
Terisa Mangule the research I've done on hard gel leads me to believe that gel nails can only be removed by using method 2 unless it's marked as soak off. Gel is the only thing I use because acrylics and I don't get along. I tell my clients not to try the soak off method because the hard gel I use is not soak off. Some don't listen to me and the damage is unbelievable.

That's a brilliant idea to leave a thin layer of acrylic while your nails grow out. Whenever I soak my nails they always break. So glad I came across your video.😄👍

At the end the acrylic is still on her nail ? That means that you can't totally remove the acrylic ? am I right ?
@1malons8 жыл бұрын
like she said, if you want the lot off, you then soak off in acetone. Tedious, but that's it, it's all off! To me, as a nail tech, if I'm asked to remove them, it literally means, the lot, back to natural nail. ..but for most clients the nails feel so vulnerable again , and that's why they came in the first place, if you know what i mean...
