That spin flare looks like a godsend. It's a lot of work to set up a flare because you gotta clamp the bar down onto the pipe, then flare it, and all that. That spin flare looks easier.
@ranckie5055 Жыл бұрын
My son and I recently installed a two-zone mini-split system and used the Spin flaring tools for both, the 1/4' and the 3/8" lines. All connections were pressure tested with nitrogen to 400 PSI and leak tested with an approved solution. We then evacuated the line set using a micron gauge and pulled it down to 175 microns and held it using a digital gauge set. No leaks and the system is running perfectly. If you follow the instructions supplied by Spin, the manufacturer, you can make perfect flares in seconds compared to several minutes per flare using a conventional flaring tool, and all you need is an 1800 RPM drill, and the Spin tools, (which cost less than a good flaring tool). The heat anneals the tubing as it forms the flare and when torqued to the required spec, that softened flare face forms itself perfectly to the face of the fitting it is tightened against, ensuring a perfect leak free joint. You can't get that with a conventional flaring tool. These Spin tools are worth every penny of the cost. I laugh when I see comments down playing the importance of doing things correctly, saying things like, "Nah, you don't need all that stuff, it's all hype", or "I did this, or I did that, and my system is running fine, and blah blah blah"! Funny part is, they'll never post a comment when their system fails prematurely two or three years later, always blaming it on the manufacturer of the system! I guess some people just have to learn the hard way.

I bought the SPIN FLARE a few years ago and I LOVE IT!!! I used to always split the copper with my old manual flare tool making flares on heating oil lines! NOT anymore! Beautiful flare every time! Though it says on the box and recommends using a drill of 1800 RPMs or more my regular daily cordless Dewalt is 1500rpm but haven’t tried it on that yet I use my other older dewalt that is 2000rpms and works well.

I feel like the swaging bits are excellent but as I saw at the end of the video the flare kinda overhangs the actual male end of the flare nut. In most major manufactured refrigerant systems the installation manuals specify that flares can't overhang the nut. But I wouldn't know personally because I never tried t them.

3:20 Just want to point out that there is no need for the tube to remain hot when joining and completing the flare. When the flare is formed, the heat created by the spinning bit maintains the malleability of the copper; as opposed to other forming methods where the deformation of the copper results in work hardening. Letting the tubing completely cool before connecting will have zero negative effect on the flare.

I can't believe the copper retains any significant heat at the mating face through the tightening procedure -- the copper-to-brass contact and the mass of the brass will heatsink it down in the first second or two, well below the point where it would affect the behavior of the material. The heat is probably playing a role during the spin portion of the process, but the nut tightening is done "cold" from the metal's point of view. Still a super efficient process, but there's no need to rush with the nut!

Will flare put as lot of dust as well? I didn’t realize you are suppose to tighten the joint right after forming a flare. I can see people installing the line set and flaring downward especially at the indoor A.H.. Since these Ductless use strainers I think this could be a nightmare. Which is your preference using these drill type or the flaring block with a clutch stop orbiter?
@acservicetechchannel5 жыл бұрын
Yes it certainly will put dust in so that is why I recommend reaming it ahead of time to reduce that and also to do this while the line is faced downward to get it out before connecting, thanks!

Not a fan of these tools. I like my flares to be done when I flare the tubing. The swaging tool is just a mess. It works ok, but as seen from this demo it's easy to have your swage end up at an angle, lopsided, or bell-mouthed. The biggest problem though is the copper contamination. Just having the tubing angled down doesn't prevent the problem as many of the particles stick to the inside. Small ID tubing is just about impossible to clean with a high degree of confidence. And there are times when you have to swage (or flare) "in-position", and that position usually isn't with the open end of the tube pointing down. I will stick to conventional tools for my flaring and swaging duties. I use and prefer the Imperial "Rol-Air" flaring tool for it's ease of use and the very nice flares it makes. The Ridgid flaring tool is a nice piece as well. For swaging I use the Hilmor compact swage tool, which is a hand-held hydraulic swaging tool. It works great and is a high quality tool despite being made in China :-( I looked and looked and couldn't find anyone who made a similar non-Chinese-made tool, sadly. Had I found a US or European made tool like this one I would have bought it even at twice the price. As a rule I avoid Chinese-made anything, but ESPECIALLY TOOLS, at all costs, but this tool is so good I had to make a rare exception. There are some generic versions of this tool out there for a lot less money. Some may be good, but the one I know of that another guy bought only lasted about a year despite only occasional use. Also, the generic tools don't go up to 1-5/8" or down to 1/4", they are limited to 3/8" to 1-1/8". This makes them less useful for guys that do small refrigeration systems or large tonnage AC/R systems. I've had my Hilmor for 4 years now and it still looks and works like new. I just keep it clean and put some grease on the forcing cone and mating surfaces on the dies every now and then like the instructions say to do.
