Bout to send this to everyone who shares on-call with me. The amount of times i’ve followed up on an Em.Call and ended up with a grossly overcharged unit is staggering.

At our company if you diagnose low refrigerant we require that you document total external static and reference the blower table to prove the airflow is good first, as well as log the indoor and dry and wet bulb temps as well as outdoor ambient.

Thank you for these. I have a few years of residential experience and now, I work as a maintenance engineer. As one of the few guys with HVAC knowledge, I’m always getting asked these types of questions so I like to watch to your videos to find better ways to explain these concepts to the guys.

Clean first (evap, blower, condenser), add gas last, or dont call. Thats what an older tech taught me. Hasnt failed me yet lmao

I had a bad experience with this. I worked at a shop where I had to go behind two guys to replace txv they diagnosed as bad. I didn’t even think about double checking the diagnosis prior to replacing. They were both wrong. One guy had a collapsed return and the other had an ECM that intermittently slowed down. Remember y’all ABC ( air before charge)

When you check your superheat, that probe should be at the discharge of the evaporator not at the condenser! However, I like your style nice video.

Not necessarily there are two types of superheat evaporator superheat and Total Superheat. The whole concept of maintaining superheat is to protect the compressor . So checking superheat at the condenser is of more importance. Usually see 8-12 at evaporator and 9-14 at condenser on a TXV metering device also when you check superheat you should check pressure at same point temp is taken. Now since there is no port at TXV taking at condenser is of more importance.

And if you had low airflow, a dead give away is little to no superheat with those pressures

Good morning Craig! Can you do a video on how failing condenser fan motors affect pressures? I've adjusted the charge only to come back a year or two later to find the motor had failed despite normal amp range. Once the fan was replaced the system was overcharged. I now check the bearings by the fan's free rotation when it appears the charge is low.

Typically a cfm is either working or it isn't for a psc type motor, if there was a situation where it was running but at a reduced speed, that would drive your hp and condensing temp up and could actually increase your subcooling if conditions were rite at the time you checked it. What was going on with your indoor readings at the time that made you think charge was low? I'd like to help you make some sense out of this if Craig doesn't respond. But more info would be needed

@HVACRTECH-83 I wish I could remember the specifics, but I don't recall since it was over a two year period.

You could also buy a Rpm Meter & start checking Motors Every Year On Maint. Rpm Meters are cheap. Checking Amps & Rpm should give you a good indication of Motor condition. i also Have a Golden rule. if Motor is over 10 Years old. it's Put up to be replaced.

Yep. R32 is up next. Companies not manufacturing 410a units anymore. They have to sell everything off this year and next year(i think)

@daveyt4802 yep or like @blackishpariah said. Or 422. But make sure you pull a vac 1st. I wouldn't mix it with the r22. Personally. Some people do the opposite and charge it with the r22 in there.

Too many are in a hurry. I travelled nine states working on primarily industrial and institutional. I can't count the times ive found overcharged tinker toy residential and commercial equipment. Always check that static is within spec. Prople are buying the allergen filters that units cant handle. Duct systems too small. Dampers and registers closed, returns blocked. That ridiculous flex that we only use 3' to 5' of at an end device is strung like a dead octopus for 25' to 50' (single run!) - AND SMASHED. Not even connected in places. Even hard duct collapsed. Blower wheels , evap and cond coils filthy. And somebody that doesnt know what tesp, subcooling, and superheat is has their magic cureall and dumps refrigerant in it. Folks need to take the blinders off
