To Divine Rod: It's easy. Take a sentence and ask "who does what?" The "who" would be a subject. The "does what" is a predicate. The skyscraper rises over the river. Who/what does what? The skyscraper does something. The skyscraper is a subject. Does what? Rises. Rises is a predicate.A bit harder now. Over the river a skyscraper rises. We have two nouns. Which I c a subject? Who does what? The river does nothing. The skyscraper does - it rises. The skyscraper is a subject (again).Hope it helps unless you are talking about more confusing examples.

Why is it at 12:11 the skyscrapers rise instead of rises shouldn't it be plural?
@lowkeyaspoon27237 жыл бұрын
Lara S I guess rises isn't plural then???? That one was weird.
@stephensanders93197 жыл бұрын
Just think about it, do skyscrapers rise, or do they rises?
@normasalas7297 жыл бұрын
Because since the word "skyscrapers" is the plural subject that means we need plural verb. "Rise" is a plural verb; on the other hand, "rises" is singular. The thing to remember is: usually a singular verb will end in an "s" not the other way around. For ex. 1. Mathematics (singular subject) is (singular verb) my fav class. 2. Every day (singular subject) passes (singular verb) faster each day. Here both singular verbs end in "-s". Now let's take a look again at plural subjects + plural verbs for ex. 1. You & John (because You, John are connected w/ the word "and" then "You & John" is all a plural subject) are (plural verb) invited to come to my house 2. Dan & Bob (plural subject) call (plural verb) home. Anyway, just remember SINGULAR VERBS end in "s" and PLURAL SUBJECTS can end in "s" or are connected w/ "and". Good luck to you, hope this helps!

It’s informative video for me. Please I have question which I am not finding any excuses for use comma with no coordinating in some example. These sentences I cited from email which I have received from yahoo news , so it must be corrected I guess. Please , can you tell me what the excuses here for not using any coordinating conjunction here ? 1- A San Diego grand jury indicted the Hunters for allegedly using campaign accounts to pay for their children's private school tuition, lavish travel including restaurant meals that frequently cost hundreds of dollars. 2-The indictment alleges the Hunters lied about how the money was spent, with the couple saying it went to charity or campaign events when prosecutors said it was really used for groceries, restaurant meals and clothing. 3-Hunter appeared to blame his wife for the violations in an interview with Fox News last year, saying he gave Margaret power of attorney when he was deployed to Iraq as a marine in 2003, and that she oversaw his campaign finances.

@@JohnDoe-iw1mz It is very ironic that you call someone an idiot while simultaneously saying something that is insanely incorrect. "Their" is often used as a gender-neutral alternative to "her" or "his", which makes it similar in those cases. Don't be such a prick if you don't actually know what you are talking about.
