@@sassycat6487It's to remember the dead from all wars, on all sides - started after WWI, in 1921, centred around Armistice Day (11 November) and Remembrance Sunday, the nearest Sunday to it. It's become a bit abused and jingoistic in recent years, as a day to only remember our own dead "with pride" when that was never the intention which was to remember and honour ALL those who gave their lives in the hope it would never happen again.

Until quite recently I lived in Chelsea for many years, only a minute's walk from the Royal Hospital where the Chelsea Pensioners live. They are army veterans. It's very common to see them out and about in Chelsea, although they usually wear a slightly less formal uniform. I shared the same convenience store (Tesco Express on Royal Hospital Road), so I saw them a lot! It's heartwarming to see them around. FWIW, the Royal Hospital is also famous as the location for the Chelsea Flower Show, held in May each year.

The odd thing is the remembrance poppy was started by an American lady, Moina Michael. Someone in Britain took it up and the rest is history.
@John-GАй бұрын
@beccabbea2511 It was actually taken up by France after that, not UK, by Anna Guerin, jointly with the American Legion and then VFW, then by Canada after she pushed it there, and only then by the UK after she pushed it in the UK. It wasn't a British idea at all but an American one, then copied and promoted to raise funds for France. I've no idea why it died out in the US, but there was a disagreement between the American League, who opted for a daisy instead, and VFW who stuck with the poppy.
@JBC-zv8fn27 күн бұрын
Earlier than 1921 that’s when the RBL adopted it. American woman Moina Micheal came up with the wearing of a poppy in 1918 it was adopted by the American legion in 1920 and Britain and Canada in 1921
