@@sassycat6487 In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. @@sassycat6487It's to remember the dead from all wars, on all sides - started after WWI, in 1921, centred around Armistice Day (11 November) and Remembrance Sunday, the nearest Sunday to it. It's become a bit abused and jingoistic in recent years, as a day to only remember our own dead "with pride" when that was never the intention which was to remember and honour ALL those who gave their lives in the hope it would never happen again.

Until quite recently I lived in Chelsea for many years, only a minute's walk from the Royal Hospital where the Chelsea Pensioners live. They are army veterans. It's very common to see them out and about in Chelsea, although they usually wear a slightly less formal uniform. I shared the same convenience store (Tesco Express on Royal Hospital Road), so I saw them a lot! It's heartwarming to see them around. FWIW, the Royal Hospital is also famous as the location for the Chelsea Flower Show, held in May each year.

The odd thing is the remembrance poppy was started by an American lady, Moina Michael. Someone in Britain took it up and the rest is history.
@John-G
@John-G Ай бұрын
@beccabbea2511 It was actually taken up by France after that, not UK, by Anna Guerin, jointly with the American Legion and then VFW, then by Canada after she pushed it there, and only then by the UK after she pushed it in the UK. It wasn't a British idea at all but an American one, then copied and promoted to raise funds for France. I've no idea why it died out in the US, but there was a disagreement between the American League, who opted for a daisy instead, and VFW who stuck with the poppy.

Earlier than 1921 that’s when the RBL adopted it. American woman Moina Micheal came up with the wearing of a poppy in 1918 it was adopted by the American legion in 1920 and Britain and Canada in 1921

a cuple of years ago my wife and i were in london having lunch in a pub, we finished and she went to the ladies and I saw a couple of pensioners holding beers and looking for seats. I stood up and offered them our table as we were leaving. They gratefully sat down and I said a few words and as my wife came out, I took my leave, outside she said i was the only person she knew who could be left alone in a pub for 5 minutes only to attract a crowd of soldier.
