@@serenamahoney2109Did you watch the video? Kurt emphasizes how important it is to get training. He has continued to get training through his entire career. I’m just getting started myself-am in rehearsals for my very first play, which is being produced by a community theater-and it’s made a huge difference to have taken classes. Of course the play itself is essential experience as well, but I intend to keep taking classes, because the more I learn, the more I realize how much more there is to learn.

Really enjoyed your video. We had very similar paths. I am an aerospace engineer by training. Worked for many years at Kennedy Space Center. I happened to get picked for technical consulting for Apollo 13. I applied to be an extra and got chosen by Ron Howard for a small speaking role with Tom Hanks. I thought I was off and running but I wasn't. After that high point, I took commercial training in Orlando and did a couple of commercials and infomercials in Orlando. Interestingly when the economy crashed in 2008 I was laid off and ended up in Ohio...and, later, I got a job in Los Angeles. After arriving here in 2016, I took a two-year Meisner program at Ruskin School of Acting. It's a tough business but I still keep my aerospace job and take auditions as available. Cheers!

Ok this blows my mind. I have been pursuing an acting career for three decades and live in Los Ángeles. The struggle is super real. Drop off, workshops, mailers, classes, networking events, headshots galore, reels, sites, self submitting, managers, agents, still don't have this success. In 2020 went to coding boot camp cause was tired of being broke and needed new actor survival job. Been miserable and depressed cause it's not acting. Had a baby 10 months ago and is also when I stopped my software engineer work but now desperate to work again. Don't want to code, want to act. Here watching your channel trying to demystify what the heck I need to do differently cause 30 years is a long time to want it and have very little success. Ready for things to change. Of course there is a strike but really need to figure this out cause it's still my dream and I'm trying not to be bitter about how easy it was for others. Very frustrated and really want to make my dreams come true.

Great content, recently read that many actors are doing "the method" way of acting, which basically means they go into character non-stop to perform better in leading roles, what is your thought on this ? I have heard lead actors and even actors with smaller screen time tend to end up exhausted and do not think physiologically it would be good to remain in character while on break or lunch. Also if actors do their own stunts, it is common to end up with injuries no matter how safe a production might seem to be.
@azucenazhou
@azucenazhou 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Kurt, you have no idea how much I can relate. The going to an audition during your lunch break part haha I’ve been there. Btw the timing is perfect, I was about to ask you if you could make a video about your journey. I’ve been feeling a little stuck because I thought I would be better off going all in on software development (I am junior, almost semi senior) and then fully pursue acting but now I don’t know, I have no idea how long that’s going to take, plus, I already know where my heart lies... I guess I just need to be more patient and change my priorities a little bit so I don’t end up so stressed out about it. On another note, due to the nature of your previous profession, did you approach acting more analytically at first as well? I am slowly becoming better at not thinking that much, specially in improv. Take care!! 💕💕
@ActingCareerCenter
@ActingCareerCenter 3 жыл бұрын
Totally get the mental struggle. I walked away from a high paying career to do something that was going to be riskier and earn much less. I still don't make as much as I used to as a software developer, even with my multiple side hustles, but I am 10 times happier than I was back then. Wouldn't trade it for the world. I definitely approached acting very analytically when I started and still probably do more than most other people. I don't think it's a bad thing though. Everybody has their own method and mine seems to be working well for me.
@CourtneyShane

@@ActingCareerCenterI really needed this right now. I am miserable with software engineering and want my acting career to take off so bad. I've been pursuing an acting career for 3 decades and so don't have your results. I went to coding boot camp in 2020 so I could increase my income so I could funnel that money into acting (headshots, reels, training, etc) . I stopped coding 10 months ago when I had my baby and now the money has run out and there is a strike (not that I was making money from acting anyway). I really want an acting career more than anything else and feel it more intensely now that I have a baby. Trying to figure out if I should force myself to be a software engineer again or get my side hustle on. Side hustles aren't acting either. Def thought KZbin for one side hustle. What are all your side hustles? Also any thoughts for someone who been chasing this dream for 30+ years and still does not have your results?

Hi Kurt! This video is so encouraging because I took some of the same steps as you especially making the difficult decision to leave my job due to the fact that it tied up so much of my time. Anyway, I was wondering about when you moved to ATL and had multiple auditions in a week, were you still using the same agent you used in Cleveland or did you have to start over with searching for auditions yourself and then finding an agent based in ATL? I'm in NYC so I know this is a good place to cast my net but things are moving pretty slow. Also, I'm curious to any recommendations for side hustles that don't involve waitressing lol.

Love your videos. I’m at a point where I’m confident enough to pursue acting, something I’ve wanted to do ever since I was young in the Caribbean. My ONLY concern and anxiety is my age. I’m 35. I know it’s not practical to think negatively about that. Is this something you can attest to? Not trying to call out your age 🙃

I'm not familiar with any acting classes on skillshare, unfortunately. There may very well be some good ones but I've never used skillshare.
