This game is surprisingly well optimized: Look at the detail in each screen. There's a high number of detailed tile sprites, a dark blue plaid background, a high-speed grappling hook, animated ball sprites and smoke effects. And only the player sprite flickers.

Wow, I'm honestly impressed by this game. It plays very much like a modern platformer where you don't have lives and there are checkpoints after every challenging part. It's very ahead of its time, there are more similarities between Streemerz and a game like Super Meatboy or VVVVVV than Super Mario Bros. or DKC or pretty much any platformer at the time.

It's a port of an indie game originally made in Game Maker I believe from a project called "Action 52 LIVES!" You should check out their Non-human game as well, although it looks more like a snes game.
