Walking Downtown Providence, Rhode Island

I take a walk in Downtown Providence. Providence is the state capital of Rhode Island, the smallest state in the United States. I start off at the Hotel Providence, make my way along Westminster Street, visit the Johnson & Wales University Campus, cross Kennedy Plaza, visit the Amtrak Train Station, climb up to the Rhode Island State House, stroll through the Providence Place shopping mall, and head into the skybridge to the Omni Providence Hotel.

It is the third largest city in the New England region. In the 2010 census, the city proper population was 178,042. The area is the 37th largest metropolitan population in the country, with an estimated MSA population of 1,600,856. This is more people than the population of Rhode Island due to the area reaching into southern Massachusetts. Providence is at the mouth of the Providence River, at the head of Narragansett Bay. The city's small footprint is crisscrossed by streets at odd angles and has a rapidly changing distribution of residents."

Providence is a nice east coast city with great historic architecture; reminds me of a mini Philadelphia and Portland. Sad to see it basically empty though.... relaxing and quiet but also kind of eerie.

Indeed I’d say providence is a bit overrated being a lifelong Rhode Islander I would highly recommend westerly misquamicut beach, tons of spots in newport good for a few days there! Hmmm aside from that lincoln doesn’t get its props either. Providence is good for the typical late night club activities Aside from that a lot of good Italian food too

Providence is a beautiful city with a Boston feel and a Seattle vibe. Unfortunately like all major cities thanks to this Pandemic, it was hit hard and looks like a ghost town. I live in RI and I'm always going to Providence. There are more the 2 colleges in Providence. Johnson and Whales is a culinary hospitality school also there is PC aka Providence College also there is Rhode Island College And last we have RI school of design that's an art and music School. That's why you see the drawings on rocks and stuff. The resterants are also very good. We also have water fires in the summer. You can walk around and look at fire in the water and also take a gonderla ride on the water to see the fires.

Love your videos AK!! As a Rhode Island resident with a deep appreciation for Providence, it's super cool to see that you came here. Providence is a beautiful city with a ton of character and charm, and has come back to life much more since when you visited. I know you're in Florida now, but I encourage you to come visit again 😄 maybe plan a trip around a WaterFire event, a rhode island staple in the summer time which brings tourism from all over the world. WaterFire, PVDFEST which is a huge arts festival downtown, would make for great youtube content as well.

Very sad to see the vacancies effected by the pandemic. The first building you identified as the Shepard's building was the University of Rhode Island's Providence Campus. Always interesting to get a visitor's take! I have always lived near Providence, but I'd been living in the city for about 15 years, most recently on Federal Hill. Recently moved couple towns north as it was the only way I could afford my own place--the rents are just going up and up in the city every year. The Financial District was actually over by JWU. (If you'd gone straight after you left the common instead of turn left towards the train station). Basically the 3 skyscrapers in Kennedy Plaza back to the water. But in general, there are all kinds of businesses and firms all over the city now. Things have definitely been a lot quieter during the pandemic. Nightlife just fully reopened this past weekend and I'm certain things will be bustling again soon.

Great tour of PVD, but you didn't visit what is probably the best part of the city, the riverfront. You'll have to come back when there is a Waterfire, later this summer. By the way, you weren't lost. At the end of the video, if you walked directly towards where the camera was pointed, that alleyway between the Civic Center and the Convention Center takes you out to Sabin street just 2 blocks from Hotel Providence.
