I think the biggest relief in this matter would be that nothing happens over night, its not like one day the fisheries are booming and employing so many people but the next day it just disappears. It will be a very slow and long shift seeing the demand patterns and that will give ample opportunity for people to take up different things.

@bengilkes7676 🫨🫨, right and the fact that in America, after slavery was abolished, they did not do any sort of reparations but instead further marginalized black people and cried about having to pay better wages! So the suffering I was referring to is only about the pain of having to pay marginally better wages, and many at the time also made the case for "loss of productivity." Interesting fact about UK, didn't know that, thank you!

Japan's 3-4th land is covered with mountains, so definitely they can do terrace farming. If there are Rocky mountain then they can transport high quality alluvial soil to mountain lands and cultivate crops there. Fisherman can switch to cultivation of crops and also they can also grown sea water crops and use them for their food. They can grow spirulina in a great amount in sea water. Definitely there are options and Japan have greater creative minded people and better education so they can definitely switch themselves with little effort. Moreover Japan kill a lot of whales thag disturbs the ocean ecosystem. So from every way its possible to leave the path of evil and choose the path of good life.

Regarding food pricing, our government national and state level is not doing its job of keeping food prices in check in general. Any time there's even a small anomaly affecting supply, the food prices are through the roof. Especially this year, where the food grains and pulses have been consistently 15-20% more expensive than last year. Onions, tomatoes and potatoes you already might be aware of what the situation has been for the past 4 months with no relief in sights as prices continue to be at least 100% higher than the affordable price of ₹20 and that's just minimal inflation; at the higher end it's 500%. Your cucumbers, carrots, green leafy vegetables, peas, cauliflower, cabbage all are at an inflation of at least 50%... Lemons are at an inflation of about 200% as well in the past 3 weeks... There's a trend where everything that is good for you is getting all the more expensive and their base price of affordability is also increasing without the corresponding increase in income at the individual level on an average. And your energy prices like electricity, cooking gas and all, your housing, your clothing, your education...all these basic things have also been consistently getting expensive for the majority in this country. Your ideology depends upon the condition that a big majority of a lot of things need to be sustainable and viable financially consistently.

Hi Arvind! Did you know before the European occupation of Japan, Japan was a vegetarian country? I heard this from a Japanese. In most of the world, in fact, this is the case. Before British rule and even during it, we were a majority vegetarian country. The Revolt of 1857 - often called the 1st Indian freedom movement - occurred because the British required Indian sepoys to use their mouths to release pig fat coated cartridges in their guns. It's quite possible that as people in Japan shifted to non vegetarian lifestyle, the topography changed and arable land became sparse. What I find very wrong with the student's argument is that she isn't living in Japan. She's living in India where even now hundreds of varieties of edible plants are available. We don't even need meat for sustenance. We are, in fact, one of the most fortunate countries in the world because Mother Nature has blessed us with a landmass that is so fertile, a huge variety of fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts can be cultivated here. How long it will remain like this remains to be seen. Use of synthetically produced chemical pesticides is killing the earth. Animal agriculture is also doing the same. It is possible, isn't it, Arvind, that Japan's topography changed as a result of changes to Japanese dietary choices? One could call it punishment from Mother Nature.

Systemic change in Japan toward a plant-based, vegan society would involve significant shifts in multiple sectors-cultural, economic, agricultural, and political. Japan’s relationship with its fisheries, land, and traditional food systems would need to be reconsidered and optimized. While it’s not true that “nothing is grown” in Japan, the country's geography and climate make large-scale agriculture challenging, leading to a high reliance on imported food, including plant-based items. Here are key considerations and steps toward making a vegan economy viable in Japan: 1. Revamping Agriculture & Food Production Vertical Farming & Hydroponics: Japan already leads in vertical farming, where plants are grown in controlled environments, making it less reliant on traditional farmland. Expanding this could help grow more plant-based foods like leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables year-round. Investment in Soy and Alternative Crops: Japan is one of the world’s largest consumers of soy products (tofu, miso, soy sauce). Increasing domestic soy production along with alternative protein sources like peas and legumes would support plant-based diets. Permaculture & Urban Farming: Encouraging sustainable permaculture practices and expanding urban farming (rooftop gardens, community gardens) could bolster domestic plant-based food production. 2. Economic Shifts from Fisheries to Plant-Based Alternatives Alternative Protein Industry: Japan could become a hub for alternative protein innovation, focusing on cultured seafood, plant-based seafood, and fermentation technologies like mycoproteins. These technologies would allow the country to maintain its culinary heritage while transitioning away from ocean-dependent industries. Support for Fisheries Transition: Government incentives for traditional fisheries to transition toward sustainable seaweed farming (Japan is already a leading producer of seaweed) and plant-based seafood production can help replace the economic reliance on fishery products. 3. Cultural Shift & Awareness Education Campaigns: Launching large-scale public awareness campaigns focusing on the health, environmental, and ethical benefits of a vegan diet could help overcome cultural attachment to fish and meat-based dishes. In particular, making a connection between traditional Japanese respect for nature (as seen in Shinto beliefs) and veganism could resonate. Celebrity & Media Influence: Utilizing popular figures like chefs, athletes, and media personalities to champion plant-based diets and veganism would help normalize the lifestyle. Incorporating Vegan Options in Schools and Workplaces: Encouraging government and corporations to adopt plant-based meals in schools, workplaces, and public institutions could create a widespread shift. 4. Government Policies & Subsidies Shifting Subsidies: Currently, Japan’s agricultural policies favor certain crops and fisheries. Redirecting subsidies toward plant-based farming, sustainable agriculture, and R&D in alternative proteins would make plant-based products more affordable and accessible. Environmental Legislation: Enacting legislation to reduce overfishing, address environmental degradation, and incentivize low-carbon, plant-based agriculture could help shape the economy around sustainable practices. 5. Tourism & Export Opportunities Vegan Culinary Tourism: Japan could market itself as a leader in sustainable vegan cuisine, attracting tourists who are conscious of environmental and ethical impacts. A fusion of traditional Japanese food with innovative vegan alternatives would appeal to global food tourists. Exporting Plant-Based Products: Japan has the potential to become a global leader in high-quality, plant-based foods like miso, soy products, fermented vegetables, and innovative alternatives. This would open up international markets and create new economic opportunities. Conclusion: While Japan does have a large fishing industry and limited arable land, the country is also a hub of innovation and has potential to lead the world in sustainable food production. A combination of modern agricultural techniques (vertical farming, hydroponics), investment in alternative protein technologies, cultural shifts, and government policies could make a systemic change toward plant-based veganism viable in Japan. This would not only reduce reliance on fisheries but also support new economic models that are more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Forget about neighbours, friends, relatives, humans don't even love their own. We don't understand the pain of the spouses, kids and parents. They too are just humans like us. Now, explaining to them that all the living and moving creatures have pain is of no use. The moment they came to argue with itself is enough to prove that they are not going to change. 1) That is why a global basic income is important. Fishery is doomed anyway as per report oceans will be without any fish by 2047. And do you want to make people sick so doctors don't lose their jobs? All animal foods are bad for your health and the environment. There are successfull programs for dairy and cattle farmers to help them transition to plant farming. 2)Your point being...? 3)See point one.

Anyways we Indians dont eat Japanese fishes. By you becoming vegan, you will save fishes in the Indian ocean, bay of bengal, arabian sea.

@@jaybolt100 Use your super brain and think how fishes and fishermen are not connected with each other. India does not import fishes from Japan. By Indians going vegan, you are not affecting the Japanese fishermen.
