If you’re paying for Hogwarts Legacy, you are paying for the video game, you are paying for that piece of art. You aren’t donating money to a J.K. Rowling GoFundMe, you’re paying for something that she created and your reason for thinking her work is valuable could be a variety of reasons besides an endorsement of her views on a niche social issue. Except it’s not even something she created. It’s a product created by people completely separate from her, which she happens to have intellectual property rights over. There’s several degrees of separation to the point where it’s completely ridiculous to construe the purchase of Hogwarts Legacy as an endorsement of J.K. Rowling. Art vs Artist would only “go out the window” if the ideologies the game may be pushing (we don’t even know if it will be pushing any and I think it’s unlikely that it would) are intended by Rowling to be a commentary and a reflection of her own views. Because in that situation, the art and the artist are intended to be one in the same.

From the prespective of a trans woman: Its ok for you to choose to avoid the Harry Potter franchise because of Rowling's attitude towards trans people, however, calling others transphobic simply because they are able to still enjoy the franchise, despite Rowling's behavior, is simply ridiculous. Apparently the studio developers gain bonuses depending on the success of the games they produce. While JK will get some royalties of course, the only people really being harmed from the "boycott" are the developers who put, from what I can tell from what's been released, a very passionate amount of time into the game. i’m a hufflepuff too and honestly that’s my whole reason for being interested in the game aside from wanting to explore the castle grounds. but honestly i’m shocked that people are getting this up and arms for the game yet not anything else like the park at universal or the many many lego sets. seems like people only hate this game just to hate it, like the game is good in terms of gameplay and has multiple forms of diversity, both skin color and size, both able bodied and none able bodied. hell there’s even a gay character (that i’ve found so far.) that’s an npc for the first merlin quest line and she openly mentions her wife. i feel like the devs care much more openly about the community’s that jk clearly doesn’t.

Absolutely none of my LGBT friends cared whether or not someone played this game. I never would've even heard of the alleged boycott if it weren't for media outlets pushing the story hourly. However I have seen hundreds if not thousands of comments, often in response to these articles, dehumanizing people who are transgender/LGBT which isn't being addressed enough. My concern is very real, legitimate hatred. It doesn't particularly matter to me what a handful of overzealous people might think, sometimes people overreact to issues they're passionate about. There are good odds that a number of them don't actually support the LGBT community whatsoever, it could very easily be internet trolls trying to fan the flames and manipulate people into to hyper-focusing on those whacky LGBT characters going around trying to tell people what to do. It's also being used as a reason to incite hatred against trans people, enable confirmation bias, and goad people into saying something damaging or retaliatory in response.

I’ll be honest, i did this just to see what kind of reaction I would get. I don’t use Reddit much, but I made a post on gamingcirclejerk, it was my very first post there, and it was about how this game was #1 for preorders on Steam and PS5. The post got two views total, myself being the first, and I was permanently banned minutes after the second view. No warnings, no reason provided for the ban, no comments, two views. It was actually hilarious. Thank you gamingcirclejerk for nonstop minutes of laughter.

So I absolutely love the world of Harry Potter, even though it has flaws and I have problems with the world building, it’s still dear to me and I’ve loved it growing up. I do not like JK Rowling and disagree with lots of things she says. The idea of the world, and story can be enjoyed without endorsing her beliefs and believing them. I’ve been called a transphobe a lot lately because of this, and the best part is I’ve been told I’m not actually trans and will never be a real women because I want to play this game.

I just wanna remind everyone that not all left-leaning and LGBTQ+ people are like this, not even all trans people. Most of us are normal. I'm pansexual and care a lot about trans and LGBTQ+ rights, and have trans and non-binary friends and family that I care deeply about, and I don't care if you like a wizard game. Go have fun with it. It's extremely annoying how hard it is to call out this kind of behavior. One Twitch streamer broke down into tears after getting harassed by the T community and allies for playing the game. But if you say anything about it, you're a terf. No community should have this kind of immunity, especially when other people are affected by it. Frankly, the sooner this toxic side of the online LGBT community can be brought to light, the better, because then we can start to separate them from others.
