My wife just had breast cancer , we caught it early and luckily we caught it quickly and treated it and it was caught and it looks like a clear diagnosis .

All the sort of screening an ordinary American would never get - mammogram and sent home, then every visit to the hospital visit would show a clear mammogram and they would be stage four before they could treat it

Thats scary, i have had lumps down through the years. All normal, just literally had a mammogram, ultrasound done this week. We can have cancer that we don't realise and it can go. I wonder if that could've been the case.

@@fluffyclouds555 Thanks for mentioning that the test is online as I just took it. I actually had a couple of different test scores on a recent mammogram since the diagnostic center asks the same questions. Luckily, I'm at a lower than average risk for women of my age and race.

​@@fluffyclouds555 she vaguely mentions a couple of aunts having breast cancer but it doesn't explain her score. My mother died of breast cancer at 47 and my maternal grandmother had ovarian cancer. My score was not nearly as high as Olivia's. Her circumstances are confusing. Even my extremely proactive breast specialist would not order an MRI after a negative mammogram. Yearly MRI is already part of the rotation for high risk people though. It's baffling that Olivia wasn't already doing these things if she was so high risk. Surveillance starts way before 40 if you have family history.

They're not 100% effective in detecting cancer, especially if you have dense breast tissue, which is rather common. It specifically says that in your radiology report.

I wouldn't wish any form of cancer on my worst enemy. That being said, thankfully she will be perfectly fine, physically. Aesthetics will be her only problem. Most people who find themselves with a cancer diagnosis aren't that lucky. I hope she focuses on counting her blessings rather than the negatives.

MRIs are better screening tests since mammograms are only 60% accurate when you have dense breasts. That’s why many mammo results are clean because they can’t detect small tumors in dense breasts. MRIs should be the prevented test and covered by insurance but we all know that will be a big challenge! Her story is helpful & should get us to ask our doctors about the risk assessment test, etc. We have to advocate for ourselves & share experiences so others can learn & apply.

MRIs of the breasts are usually covered and can be beneficial for women with genetic mutations, family history, etc. It would create too many false positives in the average female population, rather like ultrasounds. The chance of detecting early-stage cancer in low- and average-risk women via MRI is actually quite small compared to false positives. Most women with dense breast tissue, which is common, do not develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but it's best that women discuss any concerns with their medical provider.
