Wow, I watched OitNB through to conclusion and was of the impression that the actors were being well paid considering how popular the show was. To hear that Emma Myles doesn't even have health insurance was truly heartbreaking. Another example of why current conditions are unsustainable. When a CEO is making $20 million base, $50 million with bonuses and stock options but the cast of his hit show is getting $20 in residuals and can't afford health insurance, that's not just wrong, that's straight up evil.

They didn’t talk about their salary, just residuals. So they were probably well paid considering their role, but that money runs out if you’re not getting constant work. Also actors spend a lot of time auditioning for which they don’t get paid unless they get called back in for additional tests. So the paycheck might not look bad for a few months shooting, but when you spread it over 12 months it’s a different story.

Ya I think when most people think of “actors in Hollywood” they think of the 1%. There is a mind boggling disparity between what, say, Jennifer Lawrence makes for a project and this Emma girl makes… not to mention the many actors who are in the background of the many TV shows and films we watch.

This is residuals and not their wages. It should also be noted they were almost all of them completely unknown before the show. Neither did anyone force them to sign for the show. I would respect this more if they shared what they were paid per episode instead.

Dang, when I got my residual checks from doing one appearance on one episode on Sense 8, I got a measly $13 per check and I thought that was ridiculous. But these actresses getting only $20 dollars for being one of the STARS on an even more popular show is just wrong. This is what happens when 99% of profits go to execs and 1% to everyone else. And this applies to every single industry. This widening income gap is just getting out of control.

My mom did a ton of serial TV back in the 80s and still gets checks for syndication/reruns, etc. Even back then as a day player (where she MIGHT have a line, but mostly not), she would regularly get checks for $5 and we'd laugh that now she could afford a coffee! To think these folks have worked way more recently, had parts that were much bigger than anything my mom did, AND they were working on much newer contracts just shows how greedy the execs have become. And, yeah, it's not just this industry, but I hope it brings the topic to the forefront.

No, there's no industry where 99% of profits go to execs. It's rare that 10% of profits go to execs at any large company. You don't know much about economics, the size of businesses, or CEO pay..........Apple made $94 billion in profit last year, Tim Cook got $100 million.....that's one tenth of 1% of their profit. And he's one of the highest paid CEOs.

Now that they are being pulled in and held to the same standards as traditional studios, they are throwing tantrums. Looking at Netflix salary info, the median actor wage is $69K, and the average salary overall is above $75K. Sorry, no tears from me. As for profits, beware of grading a company by a good season. Netflix quickly could go the way of so many other web businesses.

@@JB-ti7bl I see your point but I counter with this: In the areas where most actively working actors live (NY, LA, Toronto, Alberta, etc.) 69K-75K is not a salary that will go far, even with help. If you include things that aren't a part of the average person's monthly expenses like on-going classes and losing pay from part-time work to pursue acting jobs, that money is stretched even thinner. Then you account for the fact that actors don't work year round, they only get paid for the days they are on set and they aren't scheduled to be on set everyday of principle shooting (even A-List actors may have the majority of their entire performance filmed in only a few days or a couple of weeks for a non-action genre film). Then you see the money not only being thin, but sporadic. And let's not go into affordable health insurance... As for the services themselves, they are consolidating and expanding to prevent financial ruin. The top ones have enough consumers to be alright for a long while, or until the next media revolution occurs. Netflix didn't start its own studio for kicks. They did it to increase profits by cutting out the middle man (traditional movie distribution companies). Disney has seemingly bought the world to hedge its bets against any one of their business lines failing. The media corporations will be just fine.

It’s called “show business” not “show art” for a reason. Having been an actor in LA… I can honestly say that a big reason why actors are treated so terribly is because there are SO many of them and they are all SO desperate to be in these major big network shows or Hollywood blockbusters. I’m not saying actors deserve to be treated terribly AT ALL… but actors are passionate people who in many cases would (and have) do their art for free! The big CEOs know this and leverage this passion and desperation to make actors feel like they are lucky to just be involved in these big projects. But people gotta pay their rent and bills. It’s time the greedy bastards pay up.

Many jobs don't get residuals. The actress still got paid for her job. The residuals amount is derisory but other jobs in other industries get zero residuals. Actors and writers are not special and automatically deserving of residuals. It's an old fashioned business model.

I’m a musician. Streaming is built on the premise, that what is being streamed should be free, simply, because piracy was the first move as bandwidths grew 25 years ago. Music was hit first, because with compressed formats (mp3s) it didn’t take much to steal a song. The problems for the film and TV industry have been taking a little bit longer to show, because of the data involved in downloading a movie. It’s, really, that simple. Streaming services and the arrangements, creatives could achieve, were literally pushed with the argument, that “it’s better than piracy”. Nothing more to it. It is grand theft in broad day light, and of course the stealers are making a killing. End of story!

@@moiraohara Their contracts are old and outdated and don't account for the current environment of streaming, etc. Residuals are one of the things the massive strike in 1960 got (people weren't getting extra $$ when they would show movies on the newish medium of television). The problem is, residuals is how most actors are able to maintain a living between jobs. With streaming there is no residual income. I can watch OITNB, all seasons, all the way through this month and the actors will get nothing more from it... but Netflix will get my subscription for another month. They are making money in perpetuity and the actors aren't being compensated. They want compensation and wages that reflect the entertainment industry as it stands today. It would be like if factory workers were working on contracts made in the 1920s before the 40 hr. workweek and safety measures... and also for less pay than they were getting, say 10 years ago.

The only reason Netflix stopped mailing DVDs (much of Alaska and a few other rural areas still relied on it) wasn't that it wasn't profitable but just that it wasn't AS profitable as the incredibly low overhead of streaming. Executives and shareholders skimping wherever they can to scrounge up another cent spent to either trigger an executive bonus directly or fund a stock buyback for another shareholder pump-and-dump that puts immediate short term profit ahead of the companies own long term viability. Not every single company but every sector is dominated by companies locked into an ever tightening spiral of the snake of unrestrained capitalism eating it's own tail. Sorry, a bit of a side track about the recent Hollywood strike. I had an experience with Motion Capture and voice acting and have to say even though gaming industry is a colossus these days, voice over actors and mo cap performers are not fully considered 'equal' talent as traditional actors. What's really interesting right now is that the mainstream, 'regular' actors demand royalties for their digital likeness when it's used on new projects they are not technically involved with. Something MoCap actors could relate to...I guess the movie studios figured that their 'creative accounting' and sometimes cruel contracts/ NDA's would go unnoticed into this new era of streaming. They were wrong, preparation is everything and they were completely ill prepared for this new platform of entertainment. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in the new Resident Evil games :)

@@Gfp1995 Not really, I just wanted to talk about the disparities by default between the wages of (male) actors and the rest of the film crew that are excruciating. The so called 'below-the-line' workers who are not considered 'talent' and yet are essential to the whole production process. In a similar fashion; every DP has a team of ppl who would prepare the frame/set/location beforehand and - in a way- they're the people who create the director's vision in the first place. It's almost as if every 'above the line' creator had an army of ghost writers for their specific job. Unfortunately every back end of an ensamble work gets this treatment. Behind every composer there are studio musicians, tech assistants, the orchestrators who create the general idea.

One of the outrageous and insulting contract demands the production companies / "studios" wanted to put on rank and file actors : any "background actor" or "extra" working would be scanned digitally and that likeness could be reused forever - without compensation beyond the single day they "worked" on set. I have no idea why the "studios" would try such a demand for free likeness rights, after it has failed in all other "entertainment" fields like college and pro sports.

These games studios have thousands of hours of an actors voices, and digital replicas of their bodies, so who is to say that they can't use software to replicate / create a performance. Maybe not the major characters, but quest givers, and villagers, or random enemies and such.

But if they are only working on a 10-episode show, they generally rely on residuals to bridge the gap. If they can't afford health insurance it's because they are making less than $28K a year (the required amount for SAG-AFTRA coverage). They were probably not making very much... most of them were not well-known and the execs probably sold it as this "brave new world" of streaming... just think how great it'll be!

The only thing I can figure is if certain benefits require a certain level of dues, and dues are calculated from acting income (including residuals). Then streaming would lower your income and dues compared to a colleague on a network show.

The precedent for residuals was set decades ago. What I don’t get is how their respective agents/lawyers don’t see this when their talent gets an offer. Another question is how much did they get per episode when the show was filming? I’m not defending Netflix but it seems like a really bad contract or they got a lot upfront without a high consideration for the residuals they’re getting today. I wish there was more transparency about what each actor/tress got for various shows on various networks. Comparing OINTB to GOT, I’d like to see what a comparable character gets per episode.

Union scale. Its about approx. 2500 a week. I believe . It all depends on the project budget. I worked as a BG actor on one of the last episodes . I was paid 158.00 for the day. That was non-union. If it was Union Background., I would have been paid approx 200. for the day.

So it's important to remember that most actors aren't rich. $20, compared to thousands, is a big discrepancy. If an actor happens to be in that 85%, it would make quite a difference. If an industry is set up a certain way, where residuals are significant, and then you, suddenly, take that away, I can see why people would be upset. As I've said in a different post, something tells me that the lack of empathy, is due to the fact that these individuals are actors and not waiters, or waitresses. Waiters get paid a lower hourly wage because they're expected to make extra money in tips. It's the way the industry has been, for quite a while. I still support buying dvds, blu-rays, movie tickets. Why? It's easier to track a sale for the actual series. My money goes direct to a movie or tv series. However, my subscription fee to a streaming service pays for infinite tv show, which is very untrackable and probably hard to divy out to each show. The money that these shows make should go to the workers and sure the executives too as decent salaries, but instead it goes to shareholders. It is very misleading to compare a base salary to residual check (and yes these CEO's are still over paid). My residual checks from a show did principal work on in 2008 are now about $27.00. That's after almost ten years. I made more in residuals than I did doing the actual show. My issue here is not with the strike but the reporting creating a narrative geared toward emotional responses not facts and reason. What the actor didn't show was her first residuals checks - you get more than one. Orange Is The New Black ended in 2019, so depending on your role connected to the show, this also impacts your residual. Also to join SAG/AFTRA it is $3,000 and you cannot do union gigs unless you join (which is where you make money and build your career) you can get waived but your next gig you have to join. Most actors are out of work 98% of the time, Maybe SAG/AFTRA should reduce there membership fee which to increases overtime. Believe SAG/AFTRA Union is a very wealthy union

Actors usually get paid an hourly during shooting and residuals as they discussed in the segment. High demand actors can negotiate for more money, these ladies were new comers at the time so they would have had no such negotiating power. Besides that women get paid so much less in Hollywood than men, they probably brought in a lower annual wage than any given electrician or plumber but the work they did is continuing to bring in money.
