One great thing my instructor learned was the rule of calculating the cloud base. The calculation is done by subtracting the dew point temperature from the actual temperature and multiplying it by 400. This gives us in your situation a cloud base of 1200 feet. When I then heard you correcting the ATIS and stating that it was actually 1200 feet it blew my mind and just showed how amazing stuff you instructors teach us!

It’s great to see a true, honest IFR approach where you remind yourself to trust your instruments and not the misleading signals from your brain. Too many youtube pilots pretend that’s not a real issue on an approach.

Thank you sir for that lovely video. I am a new subscriber as of 2 weeks ago. I am a CFII (primary job clinical pharmacist) in MI. In my 36 years of flying and 14 years of teaching, keeping instrument current is my biggest barrier. Chair flying approaches in the wintertime is my cup of tea due to the icing levels. With the disgusting weather in MI, I had 5 actual holds one week before my CFII check ride. You may label yourself as entertaining but this little old CFII has learned some very valuable tips through your videos. If I ever make it back to Orlando I would love to be welcomed to the sky, if available. I have a student on Monday and cannot wait to require: "I am commencing engine start." Thanks a bunch.

Great flight! I’m in the midst of instrument training and find myself chasing the needle too much on glide path. I talk to myself too the entire way down! I know it’s a matter of practice and finding the right amount of input on keeping the GS. Getting better but sure is tough. I’m certainly enjoying the training! Thanks for the video!

If you're struggling with your instrument approaches, the most important thing to remember is that you need small corrections. If you have a Garmin 430 through 750 i prefer to have the Nav/Localizer page up with the fields of TRK(track) over DTK(desired track) on the screen. Keep your course corrections at 3° or less when on the approach. Rudders are better than the yoke for this type of correction. Most people over bank when they are coming in on the approach and they kind of swing down the whole approach. By keeping the wings level and using steady, smooth pressure on the rudders you can have much more stable approaches.

Did you ever do a VDF approach? I had to for a VMC rating. I then went to the USA to build hours. A really cool instructor, Dave, suggested flying at night, whilst I did the few hours dual the FAA insisted upon, so I could learn something new. Asked if I fancied doing an ILS approach, of course I said yes. As we got lower Dave was saying how bang on I was, and ended up saying "keep the hood on, I will give you height information". I did a smooth landing, under the hood, and Dave claimed my nose wheel ran over the centre of the centre line!!! Happy memories.

Even though you were current, and you did shoot an approach, I would have went missed even with a visual just to log that, and then re-enter another ILS for a second approach. Log as many as you can, and do all the procedures that are required to stay current. I just finished my IPC’ yesterday. Now I have to go and chase the weather. When you’re via far you always pray for a good day, when you’re IFR you always pray for 8 to 900 foot ceilings.

Why raise the flaps after touchdown (17:47)? I've heard it's a bad habit if you are going to fly complex airplanes
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation Жыл бұрын
To have more effective braking. There’s differing opinions out there about when to retract the flaps. When I’m teaching PPL students, until they are doing short field landings they leave the flaps where they are until clear of the runway. I tend to retract earlier when I’m the one flying because I trust myself to do so without jeopardising anything.

Exactly what I needed right about now, another lewdix video. I just flew commercial twice in the last week, but I can't really judge their instrument landing skills because it was clear VMC on both approaches. Single Pilot IFR flights is great with a auto pilot rather than none but the more you have to demonstrate to the DPE on your Checkride including showing him or her how to set up the approach that you was asked to do in the GPS . The less you have as of avionics in the Airplane is even better and more rewarding

Question: when fly in the clouds in IMC a plane not have need of anti-ice on propeller ,pitot and on the wings ? Or a plane can fly only if temperature are not under 0 degrees whitout antiice?Thanks 🫶
@LewDixAviation
@LewDixAviation 7 ай бұрын
Only aircraft certified to fly in icing conditions may fly in such conditions. In Florida flying light aircraft I’ve never encountered temperatures close to 0°c and thus it’s been safe to fly in visible moisture. When I flew as an airline pilot however we used to fly at higher altitudes and encountered ice regularly. The aircraft was approved to enter icing conditions and as an example we would always use anti/de-icing equipment when temperatures were at 7°c in visible moisture.
