What annoyed me the most about Matt's videos is how he used "dirty debate tactics" he would NEVER let a Christian caller use on his own show. Like when he poisoned the well with "well their criticism of me is just for clicks and money". If someone said something similar to Matt, saying he was only being anti-religion for "clout" Matt would shout them down. But when Matt does it, its fine. Or the "well 5 trans people agree with me, look at who they are supporting here". Another dirty tactic he KNOWS better to use, especially when he right away goes "not that that means anything" right after. If it meant nothing then DONT SAY IT. This was not an "off the cuff" video, it had a script that you can see him look down to read so he wrote all that in his script before hand and left it in. He said it because he knew it would impact people listening to him, and he can pretend he is still "honest" by discrediting himself quietly right after. About Matt's apparent obsession with waiting for people to expressly say they want to harm trans people, I am reminded of an audiobook I listened to a few months ago, the book is "The Escape Artist" by Brad Meltzer and is about how two Jewish men escaped from the Auschwitz during World War II... In particular I am reminded of one part of the book where it described how instead of separating people into who would go directly to the gas chambers, and who would be forced into prison labor, the entire trainfull of people were directly lead into the camp, and kept in relatively hospitable conditions, though there was a note the Nazis wrote in their directives to themselves, to give this groups of Jewish people "special treatment" six months later, and on that date exactly six months later the Nazis stuffed everyone of those people, including children they had spent the last six months helping take care of, into the gas chambers to kill them. This happened twice that the person the book was about witnessed, with the internal Nazi note about giving the Jewish people "special treatment after six months" happening both times... So in the calendar reminders/appointments that the literal Nazis wrote to themselves, reminding themselves when to kill specific groups of a few hundred of people each, while committing a literal genocide, literally during the World War II Holocaust, literally at the literal DEATH CAMP that was Auschwitz, the Nazis did not literally say they "wanted to exterminate Judaism", or "harm Jewish people", or to "kill Jewish people" in their official paperwork... I know that Matt has probably spent the last decade, or two regularly having to deal with religious people who make assumptions about his life as a Christian, and subconsciously (and sometimes consciously) believing they know his inner thoughts, and motivations for being an atheist better than he does, and I suspect that makes Matt hyper sensitive about anything that resembles that in other contexts, which would be understandably. So while in a quite one on one setting Matt is probably correct about what is most likely to persuade an individual person to stop following harmful ideas, from a strategic point of view understanding why someone wants to implement particular harmful policies only matters in so far as that understanding helps prevent those harmful policies from being implemented...

When he's debating theists, Matt often talks about the mental block that stops them from seeing how their position doesn't follow. He has the same problem, but it's his liberalism. Completely prevents him from good faith engagement with ideas he can't reshape to fit his ideological commitments. It's easy to spot, too. All lying does is hurt your own credibility and makes people have to double check what you're saying more often.
