The whole "you can't be racist against white people/sexist against men thing": I used to HATE that idea, because I'm a white kid who went to a predominantly black school district. I was bullied for a lot of things, including being white. And it fucked me up and made me angry. It took YEARS for me to realize what I experienced was not systemic racism, but likely pushback from a white supremacist society. The kids I went to school with weren't free to rage at the government or the police, but they could pick on the weird quiet white girl everyone else was bullying anyway. I was a safe target for poor treatment they got elsewhere that they were barely old enough to understand. What I experienced could also be laid at the feet of systemic racism against POC in America. An edit to everyone trying to dictate to me what my own personal experience was: Who are you helping by arguing about the semantics of racism? Who benefits by you fighting tooth and nail to be able to say "Actually white people can be victims too"? Because it's not POC.

On the whole thing about: "Can't be sexist against men. Can't be racist against white people." Even if I kinda get what people mean when they say that, I still think it's idiotic. For one, you can't know if everyone who says it is acting in good faith. Secondly, even if you're saying it in an academic way, it comes off as socially inept because you know it's just gonna confuse people. You're setting yourself up to have to give a whole lecture on what you mean, and most people aren't gonna be receptive to that, nor are you gonna have the energy to repeat it to every person you talk to. I think it's fine to just view it like a spectrum, using sexism and racism as umbrella-terms for things of differing severity. Bigotry in the hands of the powerful is the worst kind. But the powerless are just as capable of prejudice against specific groups, and arguing about the term to use for it just seems like an ineffective use of our time.

I'm pretty sure the show that that clip was from was one of those manosphere type channels where they try to get young women to say uninformed stuff that they can then dunk on, and congratulate each other for being so wrinkle-brained. So if I'm right, it would follow that those particular ladies were selected for maybe not having done the reading necessary to have phrased it in a way one might characterize as more palatable for cis het white dudes such as myself. ALLLLL of that out of the way, I would've said something more along the lines of "white people and men can experience racism and misandry, but they'll never face either systemic racism or the downside of patriarchy in America, at least not as it exists today." Oh, and she was also definitely coached to give the hottest take she's ever heard. No, Jake. Systemic Racism is a different from of racism, but both racisms are still racism. That's not a progressive take of yours.
@josefstalin96784 ай бұрын
I think you can definitely be racist towards white people, even in america, on a personal level. Where white people in america are privileged is that they dont have to deal with racism on a systemic level. A black person in america (or any other group thats a minority in the US) couldnt participate in systemic racism because their race doesnt control the system. However, if a black guy said "man I really hate asians" and mocked asian people by doing the slanty eye thing whenever he saw them, that would 100% be undeniably racist. Similarly, if I moved to Dubai and complained nonstop about how much I hate arabs, Id still be racist even though my race isnt the one thats in control of the UAE. It all comes down to whether the racism in question is on a personal or systemic level and unfortunately, racism on a systemic level often creates racism on a personal level from the people on the other side of that system.

The Ottomans enslaved several million Europeans and Africans over a period of a few centuries, but their slave system was different from the Atlantic slave trade. The laws and customs concerning slaves in the Ottoman Empire was very similar to Roman slavery- they saw the people both within and without their empire as useful tools to sustain their power. Weirdly, slavery in the Ottoman Empire sometimes resulted in greater social mobility, so a lot of peasants would actually sell their sons and daughters into slavery to escape poverty. Some slaves became important members of the Ottoman government, and many of the Sultans were the sons of slave women. The slavery that existed in the Americas was more akin to the Spartan's enslavement of the Helots. They were treated like livestock and there was no social mobility whatsoever. The best a slave in the Americas could hope for was their master choosing to free them.
@mimido234 ай бұрын
One of the taxes Ottomans had in Bulgaria were the first born son of families, called "blood tax". Those boys were trained as the most brutal soldiers so they can do the most horrific stuff. And that's still not the worst being done compared to slavery in the US.
@aralornwolf31404 ай бұрын
And once they are free, hope they aren't mistaken for an escaped slave and brought to some other farm... to be brutalized. Then there was the Dread Scott ruling. "Man in this instance referred to white Europeans. As you are neither, your rights don't need to be respected."

While this dude doesn't know what he's talking about, the North African slavery he's talking about was more-or-less unconnected to the Triangle Trade. Slavery in the Medieval and Early Modern Muslim world was an extension of the slave systems that had existed in the Mediterranean and Near East since agriculture was invented. Islamic law sort of forbade keeping Muslim slaves, just like Medieval Christians theoretically couldn't keep Christian slaves, so Muslim slavers would either raid themselves or buy slaves from areas which weren't predominately Muslim, like southern Europe, the Caucasus, East Africa, or Central Asia. Race didn't play an actual role here, religion did. This Afroeurasian slave trade had a lot of differences from the colonial chattel slavery seen in the Americas. In the Muslim world, for example, you see it used to fill a number of roles, from agricultural labor to professional military and administrative classes. Manumission was also pretty common compared to chattel slavery in the Americas, and it wasn't as much of a generational thing. It's sort of reductive to make more than a broad comparison between the systems. Not trying to defend any form of slavery here, just point out that one awful system of labor isn't really the same as another awful system of labor.

women pick the bear because the bear is predictable, and if you know the survival code regarding bears you're more likely to walk away unscathed, or with at worst a little damage. Not so much the case with men, men are unpredictable, odds are 50/50 the guy is a decent guy who will help, but that also means the odds are 50/50 he will instead assault or murder the woman. You will always have a better chance with the bear, again, as long as you know the survival code regarding the bear. "If it's Black, fight back. If it's brown, lie down." Basically a black bear is a scavenger, and is more likely to run away from you than attack, but if it does get to close, give it's nose a good, solid punch, a bear's nose is extremely sensitive. Buit a brown, or grizzly bear, is a hunter, and relishes nothing more than a fight before the feast. Your best option is to play dead, he might bat you around a bit, but as long as you keep your head and neck covered, he will eventually get bored and leave.
