Wild fact, you can be non-religious and respect people's boundaries, in fact even when I was still religious and when with a girl and she was like "Oh hey stop" and I stopped it was more cause she wanted me to, and not due to my own religiosity.

Gotta disagree on stopping at "it's OK to wait till marriage for sex". Yes it is - if that decision isn't rooted in shame from other people. I'd say 90% of people who want to wait are purely ashamed and would not make that decision given emotional freedom.

29:37 I'd like to add another kind of asexual person that so very often gets forgotten about. The "I am not sexually attracted to anyone, but I have a libido that simply won't quit so sometimes I get turned on at random by nothing and then I just gotta Deal With That" asexual. An asexual like this may be sexually active on THEIR terms, not just that of their partners, because they have their own needs to take care of. They just are not attracted to anyone. Not all asexuals have little to no libido. It's a sexuality, defined by sexual attraction, not by if they want sex or not. This, of course, does not invalidate asexuals who don't have much or any libido, you're valid, there's nothing wrong with you. Source: Me, an asexual with a high libido who's tired of questions about how they can be asexual and still want sex.

hell yeah 🙌 I’m a sexually inclined person dating an ace person and it’s always nice to see more perspectives as I educate myself. My partner enjoys flying solo, but has no interest in mutual activity (which, just to clarify, is a boundary I respect, like all their boundaries). The way they put it is, it’s like if someone else has a video game genre they’re really into, and you’re not. You want to be able to get into it and play together, but it’s just not your thing. Really made it click for me.

Thank you! I'm ace but I have a naturally high libido and while I love seeing more ace representation in general it can be difficult when the vast majority of it is about aces with little to no libido and just ignores that asexual people with libidos exist. All aces are valid, no matter their libido or sexual experience 💜

iirc, "intentional dating" is related to the Evangelical concept of "courtship", basically meaning that your relationship has the "intention" of building toward traditional marriage. It's super cringey and basically boils down to implying that the only acceptable dating is some kind of training or trial run for marriage, otherwise you're (I shit you not) "becoming an obstacle for someone's future spouse" I know these things because I'm probably the best at Christianity, just saying.

@ajiththomas2465

I get it. Although the concept of "intentional dating" can be a good one that people can use, regardless of its Christian context. Instead of having countless empty casual sex or relationships with people that won't put in the same work in the relationship as you do, putting in the mindset of trying to intentionally find someone you want to spend the rest of your life with can help you really filter through future partners and find the one that fits you. Intentional dating is fine as a concept. It's simply the Christian evangelical context that makes it problematic.
@KylerQuinn
@KylerQuinn 4 жыл бұрын
Ajith Thomas nah, I’d disagree with that. I think dictating any sort of ‘proper’ or ‘correct’ way to go about personal romantic experiences is inherently harmful. Not everyone enters a relationship wanting to marry, and there are certainly people who will never want to get married. Should they then not engage romantically with others, given that they would impede someone else from marriage? Should teenagers who first start dating do so with the intention of marriage? Or should they not date at all? People are so wildly different from one another that setting a precedent like that would only cause harm.

My middle school health teacher told us that women who have sex before marriage (she directed the statement at the entire class, but it was clear she was talking specifically to the girls) were like used cars. She had us fill out a ‘milestone’ worksheet where we marked at what point we’d feel comfortable having sex - strangers, friends, fiancés, dating partners, etc,. She then pretty much shamed everyone who marked anything other than spouse because, “[...] even if you’re engaged, they can still leave you, and then you’re like a used car. Everyone would rather have the newest, cleanest model over an older used one, so don’t let yourself get that way!” Yikes.

*CW: sexual assault/violence* ------------------ Yeah, idk, I guess a lot of this comes down to how we define “pushing boundaries”, which are incredibly important, but also incredibly subjective, and there are different conceptions of what “pushing boundaries” means, and where is the line between going *over* a boundary (which I think we can all agree is bad) vs pushing boundaries in a way that isn’t as problematic, and potentially even healthy depending on the circumstance... The obvious answer is always honoring consent, yeah? I agree, but that’s not without its problem either, bc not everyone completely agrees on what consent consists of. Unfortunately, people don’t even agree with what qualifies as sexual assault and (unwanted) violence. *I think we mostly agree; I mean, we certainly agree that violent rape is never acceptable* (that is, consent is actively not being given, or strongly revoked, and this is ignored and pushed past with zero concern for that lack of consent). *The problem is that between the back and white of fully understood, shared consent, and absolutely no consent, that there is more grey area than most people are willing to admit.* What’s also a problem, imo, is how a lot of people react to that fact, and I’m not just talking the weird, incredibly unhealthy, puritanical, sex negative BS that often comes from the right/conservatives, but also the form(s) of this that I’ve seen come from people who are progressive/left, in most other areas. So, ugh, what is to be done? I think we just need to continuously bare in mind that these things are often pretty complicated, and that people are fickle, and they don’t always know what they want, or understand their own desires, and they have to be given the space to make mistakes, and the support and understanding to recover and grow from those mistakes (and that should be our position on most all social matters, within reason, and not just in the realm of sex). *Open and honest communication is the key to understanding each other, whether or not we are ashamed in those disclosures, and our responses in radically honest communication should be our best attempts at radical understanding and empathy!* I swear, if we really made this a cultural norm and a concerted effort, that sooo many of these problems, especially in regards to sexual relationships (but not only), would not so much disappear completely, but would at least be “headed off at the pass”, before misunderstandings or confusion turns into actions that one or more parties perceives as transgression. This isn’t easy, especially given all our cultural history and our current norms, but I’m personally very concerned about a lack of these kinds of “best practices”, and even just a lack of an attempt at understanding, let alone forgiveness, in the kind of progressive and leftist spaces they are (arguably) needed most. Anyway, I could go on, but this is long enough, and I don’t want to start to ramble.. I’m just saying, communicate openly and honestly with each other, and practice empathy and understanding, and let’s try to be as constructive and nurturing in how we navigate these waters. This is not an easy topic. Just remember, we’re barely pulling ourselves out of hundreds... nay, a thousand+ (west focused, I know)... of years of sexual and romantic norms and practices that were VERY restrictive, and even when and where they weren’t, the norms and understandings this stuff was soooo much more different than today... Idk, I think this ought to humble us, and motivate us to be very understanding, and forgiving.✌️❤️♾

Basically saying, don't wait till marriage, but don't have sex in highschool, because highschool boys aren't good at it, and the risks are too high then. Between pregnancy and the emotional toll at that age. And the afore mentioned ineptitude of highschool boys at sex. To use protection, and to understand that there is a learning curve between partners, so it's likely that the first few times won't be great. And then she assured me that she'd answer any questions I had.
