I've noticed that this usually involves Boomer idolization of the 50's in particular (you know, back when police dogs and fire hoses were used to attack black civil rights protesters) but then you've got some younger kids like John Doyle who go so far as to LARP like they live in an episode of Leave It to Beaver.

I think this is endemic of the religious mindset more than anything else. Look at evolution vs. creationism, globe vs flat earth, etc. the latter thinks if they can poke holes/misrepresent the former enough, they win by default. No, even if you were somehow successful in disproving evolution or a globe earth tomorrow, that doesn't mean "godidit" or "earf's flat" is automatically the correct answer all of a sudden.

Talking about kids asking about skin color reminds me of something from my childhood. So the man I call my dad is not my sperm donor, I don't even know who is. But, he is the man that stepped up and raised me since I was about 3. He is a black man. And I'm very white (did an ancestry test and I'm literally all fucking white). Growing up people would ALWAYS tell me that my dad wasn't my "real" dad. And they always made it about our race difference. At that age I never understood what they meant. Like I knew in a child like way that my dad wasn't the one who contributed to my DNA. But I never understood why anyone would use his skin color as a reason to tell me he wasn't my "real" dad. So one day, when I was still REALLY young, I asked my mom why dad's skin was darker than mine. Her response was to put her arm next to mine and say "look, my skin is darker than yours, too." And basically that was that. I was like 6ish and taught that all people have different skin tones and that doesn't really matter and it had no affect on my dad being my dad. Once I got older, I realized when people were saying my dad isn't my "real" dad, they meant he wasn't my BIOLOGICAL dad. And I got really fucking aggressive about it. I still am. Anytime someone tries to pull that "well, he's not your REAL dad" bullshit with me, I say something along the lines of "No, he's not my BIOLOGICAL father. But the man raised me and took care of me. He is always there for me. So yes, he is my REAL dad." People always end up feeling like an asshole afterwards, which makes me happy. Cause you should never be trying to invalidate a parent child relationship solely because there's no blood relation between them. Fuck, I'm closer to my dad than I am to my mom, and she literally pushed me out her cooter.

Even if we take him at his word that the main goal is for people to work on themselves... the logical followup is then to work on society to ensure everyone has equal opportunity and means to do so. Everything progressives are fighting for would work for that. But no, this is all empty platitudes to excuse the status quo.
