5:05 - Removing the reservoir return hose.
5:28 - Extracting power steering fluid from the reservoir return hose (coming from the steering rack)
6:35 - Removing the reservoir outlet hose, the reservoir and cleaning it.
7:33 - Removing the power steering pump high pressure line and the o-ring.
8:20 - Removing the power steering pump intake and the o-ring.
9:54 - Installing new o-rings.
10:26 - Re-installing the power steering pump high pressure line and the intake.
12:00 - Re-installing the reservoir and the hoses.
12:26 - Adding new power steering fluid and starting the car.
You can fix a similar issue on other Acuras/Hondas or pretty much any other car with a power steering pump using this video.

@@losniteowlsbg See if the fluid bubbles and if it's on proper level first. See what condition it's in. Perhaps replacing it would help if it's in bad shape. If not, it's probably the pump.

dude, 10 time simpler: disconnect the return line and get an empty 1 gallon milk container to have dirty fluid go into (there is space to put in in there and shove the line into the top). remove the filler cap and pour a quart+ of fluid while a second person starts the car and turn the wheels from side to side until return liquids goes clear. That's it! 5 min job. I don't believe getting a bit of air by mistake will be an issue (I've seen others run it dry but I didn't want to chance it). In your video you fluid is still very dirty! my technique you get 100% clean going in, dumping old coming back, not mixing... just suck all dirty out before disconnecting return line and poor clean in. thumb down. I ended up also replacing the pump in/out o-ring as mine were shot (very very dirty fluid and leaking steering column so I added AT-205 to help other seals in the system. $20 vs 1000+ quoted by dealer who wanted to replace the lower parts. Been perfect (no leak or sounds) for 4 years now.

Great video. Even a girl can do this diy thanks to video such as yours! And yes, that bottom bolt is a real beast! Dropped mine and couldnt locate it for hours!! Made the job take way too long, I suggest to follow his lead and put towels and rags down to help prevent that from happening to you!! After finding it, my neighbor came to see what i was doing, and HE thought he could do better and faster and he dropped and completely lost same bottom bolt!! Couldn't find it ever. ..had to put different bolt in and not sure exactly how long it needed to be, but so far, I think it will work! Can anyone give me the size of that 10mm bolt? My car is 2005 Acura RL. Anyone please?

Thanks for the video, it was very helpful. Mine is an 06 MDX and that lower bolt was a pain! If you remove the hose and move one of the electrical lines by the reservoir on the other side of the belt, you can get just enough space to get the wrench on. Could not do it with a straight wrench, that little angle is the key. Replaced the 0-rings, fired it up and after a while (getting bubbles out of system) it quieted down. WhooHoo!

One important thing is there is no need or purpose to drain any power steering fluid. No, or hardly any fluid comes out when you remove either the inflow side or outflow side. Also, it is way more important to change the inlet O-ring with the one 10mm bolt seeing as the air is getting sucked into the pump past that O-ring. I used a 3" offset 10mm box wrench and it easily fit in and no need to remove the belt. Thanks for the video!

I have 08 and my steering was whining a bit and PS leaked a bit so I topped up with Lucas power steering leak. It’s fine for a month or two then Power steering liquid tank was empty. Today I noticed the small slow leak in my garage. Would replacing O ring work for me? Also I’m not that handy so I want to take it garage but I’m afraid they will say just replace the power steering pump and that’s $700 I can’t afford right now. Appreciate your feedback. Your videos have save me in the past as well, keep it up.
@AcuraAddicted
@AcuraAddicted 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think bad o-rings would cause a major leak. Unfortunately, it’s likely you have an issue with your high pressure hose. It’s very important to have your PS fluid topped off at all times and not get below the min level, which will cause air introduction into the system and can damage the pump itself. My advice: try and locate the leak source yourself first. If you can’t, get a professional opinion then and go from there.

Hello Bagdan, I love my 07 Acura MDX, but was not sure if I keep it for a long due to high car maintenance cost (thanks to rip off by dealers). But your videos encouraged me to have some DYI (I changed front brake pads and rotors on my own) and now I am confident that the car is going to retire in my garage only... I would appreciate if you can help with below Transmission relates issues. 1. Around a year back I received a code - P0847 - which as per my research is about the Transmission pressure switch. However I havent faced any issues since last year. But I am planning to change them along with my ATF change (as per your ATF video ofcourse). 2. Around a couple of month back I recieved another code - P0706 which I believe is related to Transmission range sensor. But again havent been facing any major issues since then, but the gear shift seems little sluggish (this might be attributes to ATF not changed since long time). If you have any insight into above, can you please let me know If I should get these codes (especially P0706) diagnosed at Dealer? Should I replace Pressure switches (P0847) and Transmission Range Sensor (for P0706)?
@AcuraAddicted
@AcuraAddicted 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback! Your errors and transmission behaviour most likely indicate pressure switches are due for change. What's your mileage? Of course, just changing the fluid might improve your transmission behaviour, but I would still replace the pressure switches to avoid further transmission damage.

One more thing about Transmissions switches. I heard there are 3 of them. Should i change all? Also do you know the correct part numbers? I found its 28610-RKE-004 & 28600-RKE-004. But 28600 does seem correct.

I have a 2002 MDX. Getting that lower nut of is real tough. Using an offset 10 mm wrench in conjunction with a regular wrench and your fingers is the way to go. Also, I'm not sure that sucking the old fluid out of the hose is a good idea. I did it but it introduced a lot of air into the system. If you watch many videos on how to change your power steering fluid, no one recommends doing it this way. The goal is to keep air out of the system. So I would say skip this part. One other note is that I bought the O rings on Amazon and the top one was not the right fix. Fortunately, it was my lower one that was split.

I have to say that this is a nicely created video and would put these dealership out of business. Thank you. I got to this video because I was low on power steering fluid on my 08 MDX and wanted to know why. I did find that for some parts honda dealers are cheaper than ebay or Amazon. 12 ounces of power steering fluid cost 4.17 at the dealership whereas it's @8 at ebay or amazon. Also, I wonder if someone could help with a really hard to turn steering wheel for the last several years. The fluid is not the problem since I have it topped of

Hi Roy. Thanks for the feedback! Although the steering effort is very subjective (I have no issue with steering with one finger, for example, but others find it to stiff), if you noticed your steering effort has increased over the years, it's likely the steering pump issue.

Rather than drain the reservoir, would it be advised to crimp or clamp the hoses shut to stop any fluid?
@AcuraAddicted
@AcuraAddicted Жыл бұрын
For a newer vehicle that would probably be an option. Given this car is 15 years old and the hoses are no longer as pliable, there’s a high chance of damaging them. Plus it’s a good idea to remove as much contaminated fluid from the system as you can easily.

The way to make Acura great again would to bring back the original MDX because it’s not the same as generation two and up to current MDX. They should’ve change the name or discontinued the name. 2001 to 2006 the best MDX hands-down 2005 and 2006 best models. Nobody makes anything comparable anymore maybe the Ford Explorer but it took for that long really?

Hi Bagdan, I am in a bit of Situation l own a 2013 mdx elite package the dealer replaced both o rings on my car as the steering was a little stiff. Now the stiffness is gone but it’s making the same sounds yours was making before you replaced the o rings. I asked them to check if the o rings were installed correctly they insist they did so l am stuck here with the annoying sound which was not there before they worked on it. My assumption is they didn’t place the o rings correctly hence air is entering the system. I am not technical at all and was wondering if you could help me with tips or suggestions thank you.

Check the fluid level (should be in between lowest and highest marks when the car is cold). Then check for air in the system. If that doesn't help, replace the o-rings. That's just a natural course of actions with this (go from free to cheapest and up).

I have a 2003 Honda Accord with the same issue. I took it to a dealership who quoted me $850 to replace the whole pump because it was leaking fluid. So I was able to remove the pump because I couldn’t remove the bottom bolt and noticed that there is already an orange o-ring. I replaced the old one with the new one and the noise is still there. I even topped off the fluid. What could be the problem?
@AcuraAddicted

Unfortunately, if the issue is left unattended, the inner parts can develop permanent damage. I’m afraid it wouldn’t be possible to tell unless the pump is removed and disassembled. I would probably get an aftermarket pump installed. Even the most expensive aftermarket pump at rockauto.com is under $200. You would have to swap the pulley from the old pump. And don’t forget to drain the fluid as much as you can first to avoid a big mess.

@@nguyennkhiem I think that you may have a leaky fuel injector. You're gonna need to either install or connect a fuel pressure gauge to be sure. When you say sometimes, if it sits for a while, it's hard to start, but if it was running, then cut off for only a few mins, then it's easy to start back up. If so, it's most likely a fuel related issue. If the fuel leaks into your engine, then it becomes flooded, and your engine would have to dispose of the excess gas before it'll crank up. Fuel injected engines run best from the spray mist of gas from the fuel injectors unlike carborator engines. GL
