@@littlebitofeverything607 I noticed you said it turned out smaller, maybe it was your tension? It looks beautiful regardless.😄

I’ve had many yarn swifts over the years to hold my skeins and wind them into balls. The best by far is my current one by hornshaw woodworks. It’s a windmill style yarn swift, handmade, and extremely strong and well designed. It is a great investment and will save you countless hours untangling yarn. They aren’t cheap - but you are way better off getting a good one rather than cycling through 5 or 6 that don’t work as well and/or break eventually (and in turn spend a lot more in the process). I don’t work for them or get any fees - I’m just a knitter recommending what works for me. Thanks for your video!

I think you did stellar work - nice, even stitches and edges. If you block this piece, you will likely get more central width, but not quite as much wingspan growth. I'm guessing, like you, this is due to the yarn substitution. Just more info for another project, right? Every projecy makes us better crafters. Aside from teaching our kids to hold the skeins, which does create a bonding moment, here are a few ball winding hacks from a frugal old lady who used to be a frugal single mom. Good umbrella swifts are pricey. I eventually got one, but it was one of my last tool buys. I used a chair back for the longest time. Then I started brainstorming DIY solutions. Making a large cardboard box into a cylinder or even leaving it square will let you control the work in just the right size. Be sure to tape over the seam. Otherwise, the yarn will likely catch. Now comes the fun hack: tape that cardboard cylinder to a flat piece so it looks like a graduation cap. Then tape the flat piece to a lazy Susan or rotating cupboard organizer. Pull away!!! Lastly, use a wire coat hanger. Leave the hook intact. Pull the body into whatever shape will actually hold the hank in an oval or rounded shape. Close the hook almost all the way. Get a swiveling lanyard, the kind with a clasp hook. Attach it to your shower curtain rod. Put the hank on the coat hanger, hook on it onto the lanyard, then pull away!! Yes, all of these take a bit of time to make. But they can be reused, and the money is minimal. I always go back in my head to think how our ancestors made do with the items at hand. Good luck in future!!!🙂

I am crocheting it too. It will grow when blocked. Also to wind the hanks without that mess i use three legs of a stool or chair upside down easier to roll into a ball. I am using four shades of blue too Great. Job.

Great attempt, you did a stellar job. I got some yanks (plain boring light cotton) for free. I unwind my yanks on my tall clothes dryer, rolling it into empty toilet roll card boards - by hand. I found it easy and quick. I would probably purchase better yanks one day. I think Expression Fiber arts are geared towards people who can afford to buy high premium yarns. With that been said the patterns are beautiful and ideal when you have no other projects you are working on - I have so many WIPS. Like I said one day. well done, x

If you don't have a yarn winder you can hand the hank over the back of 2 chairs (same ones) tighten them and then you can roll your yarn into balls. A bit trying, but works well. 😉

Very beautiful! What was the fiber of the yarn? Alpaca? Acrylic? Silk/Acrylic? If you just use a bigger hook you would get your size you wanted. And blocking it will stretch it bigger. You may get the size you want just from blocking it!

The hank can also be hung on a chair back or the handles on a walker to make it easier to ball up.

Before I got my knitting swift I used two, two liter pop bottles to keep the yarn under control while I wound it. The swift is the way to go though..

Your version is beautiful. If you don't want to invest in yarn winder then hang the hank around the back of a chair. 💕

Hello friends, we new subscribers, we had similar problem. We put the long yarn around the back of the chair and rerun the yarn with the other hand and turned it into a ball from the other end. Enjoy

I was going to say, you must have used a smaller hook and a heavier type of yarn. No flowing, no giving, no satin movements to it. How ever it is pretty nice and warm for colder evenings.💕😍
@wiseegg44842 жыл бұрын
Impressive for your first shawl! Definitely block your shawl, it makes a huge difference. Chandi, on her site has info on how to do that. I think she has it on KZbin also. If you used larger yarn it actually should have made the shawl a little larger, not smaller. Size of hook maybe? I would not have guessed this was your first ... A++.
@littlebitofeverything6072 жыл бұрын
I'll have to look into blocking. Lots of KZbin help on this first one.

Hi there. Beautiful work. I have purchased the pattern but I am stuck in row 9! How did you managed to do it? Thanks
@anneberton85922 жыл бұрын
I used the fingerling yarn from them. Also came out much smaller than their measurements. Very disappointing. Wanted a shawl. Got another neck scarf. No amount of blocking would get this to the advertised dimensions.

This was my first. I wasn't sure how blocking worked. Just did my best!
