In an era when the values of the Declaration of Independence seem out of sync with mainstream American culture, you may feel tempted by pessimism. However, Adam Curry thinks that we’re on the verge of a realignment back towards reason. Even during the strangest moments in history, the pendulum has always swung back eventually, so why not give optimism a chance?
Adam first became a household name as an MTV VJ, but that was only the start of his nearly four-decade crusade to revolutionize media. Since childhood, he has been obsessed with using cutting-edge technology to improve the ways that humans communicate ideas, from building MTV’s first website to bringing Bitcoin micropayment to podcasting.

Along with prohibiting pharmaceutical companies from advertising we should also prohibit them from sponsoring our news media. Because they create these organic looking stories that are much more destructive than the commercials.

I have to ask, where are you living? That's all that's on commercials where I live. My son said to me, mom refresh my memory. Back in the day wasn't it unethical and illegal for attorneys and pharmaceutical companies to advertise? I said, yes and we need to go back to that. On some Firestick apps you can watch old commercials and oh how cute and feel good they were. Today? Medical Medical Medical! They don't want us feeling good. There was a guy from another country that visited here and couldn't believe the medical commercials. He said, it's banned in his country. They feel that's between you and your Dr. Bingo! Its just a result of the testing of Americians during covid. They found out how to get control of America in the guise of health.

One thing that I think many people under say 30 don't know is.... Prescription drug ads on TV didn't happen before around 1997. Before then, they didn't exist. The reason they didn't put ads on TV was the drug makers were concerned about all the disclaimers they had to put in about the drugs, and didn't want to take up a long amount of time in the ads to put in the disclaimer. That all changed in 1997 when the FDA clarified what they would require in a TV spot. But I think Adam is quite correct that we need to end this practice. Not only does it create this weird space where people are asking to be put on a drug they saw in an ad, but it only increases costs for drug companies. Ads are like a munition, and if the other guy is using it, you have to as well to compete. If congress were to act, and ban them... it'd level the playing field, and drug makers could direct more money towards... developing new drugs.

@@KM-zn3lx As fucked up as it is, it is considered normal in some sub cultures. For example there are gay guys that have basically decided that they are going to have unprotected anal sex with many partners and that they will eventually inevitably get H.I.V. It's 100% a thing and not an all that uncommon one in the gay community. Which is also why straight porn stars can't have H.I.V. but for gay and bi porn stars it's again basically treated as an inevitability. Like if that's your profession, "gay/bi porn star," you probably have H.I.V. But that just expresses the real world reality of gay guys that have unprotected anal sex with many partners. Whether a camera is there or not. These are general statements of course. There is also a sub culture of gay people that consider unprotected anal sex or even anal sex at all as basically unthinkable. Because you're going to end up sleeping with someone who has H.I.V. Just look at the commercials themselves. It's obvious who they are being directed at. Plus, medically speaking, living a "full life" with H.I.V. has become a reality in the developed world.

All can think is that you are so out of touch that this doesn’t sound like regurgitation of a mama bird with as many stomachs as a cow. They are apologetic about stuff which others have been saying for ever. Pointing out that coming of age for a woman is a period of physical and mental discomfort that makes them feel Disphoria isn’t controversial, it wasn’t controversial when Jordan Peterson said it four years ago and it’s only gotten to be common place now. This show is safer than the day care inside the nerf corperate office. It’s grog… water down spirit of something which others consume on the regular as a staple, for people who have no sense of this cultures pulse at all. To the point where points that the populist movement has been making for close to a decade are considered insightful. My suspicion is the core audience of this show is democrats who are just now realizing that the left left them a lonnggg time ago and are too milktoast to actually try listening to the opposition.

I think you're correct that the people driving this won't stop. They never have in the past. These people existed in the 90s as well. I knew some of them. They were annoying, and made the same dumb claims about racism. A GF of a friend of mine used to go off about how things like how racist Star Wars producer George Lucas was, and how racist Jar-Jar Binks was. She was in academia, where this sort of attitude was nursed and encouraged in some circles at the time. She managed to convince my friend, her boyfriend, but nobody else. We all sort of tolerated her, but she was in general that "annoying judgmental progressive type". All those attitudes you see now that are so, so annoying were all embodied in her, and people like her in the 90s. Sometime around 2015, there was some kind of tipping point, and suddenly everyone started listening to these types of people. It was like the 50s and communism all over again, but this time it was the left wing leading the charge. So I think the point is that these type of people and attitudes have existed for a long time. It's only recently they got magnified, and it became "cool" to listen to them, and you were a "bad guy" if you didn't. To me, THAT"S the pendulum. Who does the mainstream world listen to and follow? Because the world is filled with thousands of different ideas, opinions, and voices. But only a few get magnified.

Don’t you get it by now? Public schools and liberal colleges are indoctrination camps. They purposely don’t teach us to think, because a corrupt authoritarian government’s biggest enemy is an educated, free thinking populace. Public schools were started and initially funded by JD Rockefeller, to train qualified workers, because most people back then were too stupid to follow simple instructions and couldn’t even read. He said it himself, “I don’t want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers.” And when our government saw how effective a tool it could be for indoctrination, they took over public schools, and ran with the idea. Why do you think rote memorization is prioritized over critical thinking? Because bosses want their workers to be able to remember how to do a job, or work a machine, but not smart enough to figure out how to start their own company and become their competition. Schools teach you to assimilate and submit to authority. Do your work, get a reward. Don’t do your work, get a punishment. Frederick T Gates of the General Education Board said “In our dream, we have endless resources, and the people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hand. We won’t search for great artists, painters, musicians, nor doctors, lawyers, or statesmen, of which we already have an ample supply. No, our dream is a simple and a beautiful one; to train these people as we find them, to a perfectly ideal life exactly where they already are.” They didn’t even bother to hide their intentions back then.. They basically straight up said poor people are stupid, we’re going to teach them to be happy being stupid and poor. And they certainly succeeded. Exhibit A ⬆️

@@TheRobotButler There's a bunch of examples. The patriarchy that Ken implements in Barbie world has the women subservient, but they are portrayed as happy. When Barbie world is returned to a Matriarchy, that prior happiness was equated to brainwashing. It suggests women can't determine for themselves what makes them happy, they can only accept a paradigm. When Ken learns of the patriarchy, he attempts to get a job by merit of being male alone. It doesn't work. It's a patriarchy trope denied. Playing with cartoonish patriarchy tropes can be considered antiwoke. The movie seems to mock feminism in practice when it's not overtly romanticizing it. Woke concepts are toys they play with, without delivering a coherent message. It's a movie for everyone then, maybe.

I’m not an expert but for what it’s worth, my understanding of “woke” and “woke-ness” is when you “wake up” to see that the place where you live doesn’t care about you. It makes sense that you want to watch movies or read books that you can relate to. It also makes sense to me that many people have specific things that they relate to but never see in books, TV, movies, etc. It can also get more serious than that when we talk about government. If a citizen of a country like The U.S. feels that no one in power cares about their specific needs or concerns, it’s going to bring out a lot of emotions. I do think that “woke-ness” has kind of become a parody of itself at this point because every time it comes up nowadays, it feels very surface level. However, I personally do think that there’s value in that basic idea!
@a75lane
@a75lane 8 ай бұрын
@mallen151 The woke movement is a brainwashing movement to convince everyone that their purpose is to rail against injustices for minorities. But it’s really about taking advantage of people who believe in the movement and using their outrage about injustice as well as perceived injustices, to further the government’s goal of controlling us more and more. How do people not see this? The fact that people don’t see it is terrifying. You think you have been “awakened” to now start fighting against all the evil in the world. You’re just a pawn if you’re buying anything the media or government is telling you. They are the evil who is selling the guise of the whole movement. Pay attention where US money goes, and where that money comes from in the first place. Politics isn’t about electing people who have charisma or protect our feelings. It’s about us electing officials who keep our country financially and militarily strong against threats like Russia and China who want us dead so bad that they are LOVING the smell of blood in the water with Biden as the LEADER OF THE (for now) FREE WORLD who can’t find his way off an 8 foot stage w one set of stairs in front of him, and all our citizens being dumbed down so quickly that they can’t even tell you how a bill gets passed. Or that China is coming for us. I mean, the entire planet was shut down for THREE YEARS bc of China, and people are just goin about their lives, spewing lies the media is feeding them, perfectly happy to be told what to think & do. Remember this when we become a communist country.

About “peak woke” in the Sex and the City reboot, if representing people in fiction who didn’t used to be represented is woke, then so are representations of Jews, black lead roles, Italians, Greeks, Eastern Europeans, women as business owners and CEOs, Asians, happy single women, mixed race couples, Catholics, black and Asian characters who aren’t household servants, married couples with one bed in the master br. When each of those things showed up, even once, on TV our film, it was called out as wrong by many, and, for sure, even to those -including myself- who saw them for the first time, and weren’t offended by them, they could be a bit ham-fisted. Once most petite got over it, and new generations didn’t know it was ever a thing, the any dominant-culture voices got quiet.

In generational terms, there’s group of parents who are chill, easy-going, and able to see the big picture-that new ideas are inevitable and allowing kids to have the freedom to explore new ideas is a healthy way for them to learn critical thinking skills. But of course, you have the flip side as well-the curmudgeon parents. “I don’t understand all this. I don’t see why things have to be different than the way we did them. Everything was just fine the way it was. I don’t like change. It makes me uncomfortable, and that shouldn’t be allowed. Everything should be the way I want it to be.” The irony is that when this second group were teenagers, they complained about their parents behaving exactly the same way. 😂😂😂

Denying reality isn't children exploring new ways to think. It's insanity. When us older people were kids the complaining from older generations was "your hair is to long and I don't like this Metallica band". The complaints now are "these made up genders are anti reality and no you're not a dog in human skin". The only real bright spot is when you talk to kids under 18 there still is the fake gender kids here and there, but for the most part they see through how ridiculous and pointless it all is. The nice thing about kids is typically they're brutally honest.

Disembodiment didn't begin with the internet, it began much earlier than that. Descartes had the mind-body separation, and Kant brought our consciousness to focus and retreat inwards and to frame our world as being constructed by our own consciousness. It's not hard to then derive many of our modern dilemmas (e.g. the belief that gender is constructed inwards rather than something that manifests in the external "real" world and also the fetishization of personal identity). The internet just exacerbated a change in our psyches that have been evolving for centuries. ALL of our psyches not just the people we disagree with.

@@johnbigelson7471 I never defended the practice. I’m just being realistic. What do you think dark money political ads are? Even worse, paid news content designed to sway public opinion on a topic… William Randolph Hearst was a master of this practice. It’s not like selling ideas is some grave recent development in Western civilization. People have been selling ideas for millennia. This is nothing new. I think you should take into account a perspective of the history of yellow journalism and CIA propaganda, and realize that you are fed a lot more BS by mainstream outlets that work for powerful interests, and they do not disclose their sponsors. At least these guys identify themselves as paid programming. The CIA literally pays “journalists” to make up news, you know that right? Read up on Project Mockingbird and Operation Northwoods and get a red-pill sized dose of reality dude. Or more recently, how about Big Tech colluding with Big Government to suppress information?

I stopped watching the most recent series with SJP, and agree with you. Adam Curry is correct.
