One of the biggest traits of Gilly that goes unnoticed is his fitness. He is a fine athlete who had to do the dual job of keeping & batting in almost every game which he did with ease. Never seen him dodgy in the field.

I'll never forget the 5 consecutive boundaries off Saqlain that lit up the joint. It was an emphatic 10 wicket win and SK Warne made a cool 87, hitting the ball as hard as any batsman in the world. Steve Waugh gets a bad rap as captain. People like Ian Chappell say he was just blessed with a good team. I think that is false. He wasnt the best on field tactician but as a strategist he was awesome. He said how he wanted the team to play a certain way and made gutsy decisions - Gilly to open and dropping Warne for that key test in the West Indies are good examples. It says something when players like Justin Langer said they would walk through walls for him. Great leader.
