Simon knew exactly what he was doing. It would have been clear to everyone that this guy had the potential to go all the way. By raising a fairly mild, neutral objection it automatically puts the audience behind the contestant as it gives them an "obstacle" to overcome and avoids the optics of them being anointed. Also, Lambert is as theatrical as it gets, it's one of his strengths. Putting that in the minds of the audience sets expectations for what kind of performer they're going to be, but also gives them cover to try other approaches and styles to "prove Simon wrong".

I've seen Adam live 4x now, including both Queen and solo and he's the best luve vocalist on the planet. I attend at least 20 live shows a year with several bands per show and I've been doing this for decades... He's at the top currently and one of the best live singers ever. Their voting it was on the news the next day, which proved it was not a Fair win. It doesn't matter because he won anyway, but now you hear Nothing about that. What happened was the AT&T stores stayed open very late that night. They showed the people that were voting for the other guy to win and make sure that Adam lost. Because he was gay, it was on the news the next day and said he was losing to an unfairly other person who should not have one. So it was an illegal voting process at that time.
