"circumstances of the check, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the check or whether the check was unavoidable can be considered. This balance must be considered by the Referees when applying this rule." @iammarkstewart

Absolutely not a clean hit, or an ethical hit. At any rate, from NHL rule 41: boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously. The number of injuries that result from these kinds of hits is ridiculous. Pelech has the potential to miss many games if a concussion is involved, and all for a 2 minute minor the refs still got wrong by calling it "roughing". Charging and boarding are two of the most missed and misunderstood rules in the book.

Of course, because the ref 60ft away looking through players and the goal net has the perfection position to see whether a collision was legal or not. Ref right there didn’t call it because it wasn’t illegal, just an awkward fall after. Infuriating new league trend of “looks kinda bad so must have been a penalty” bs on display.
@RangersFan94
@RangersFan94 Жыл бұрын
This business of calling penalties based on the end result of a hit, rather than the hit itself, is ridiculous. It wasn't a violent hit and it wasn't delivered at a 90 degree angle to the boards, so it's not boarding. It's not charging, it's not from behind, it's not anything, so they just call it "roughing" because someone got hurt? I mean did the ref from across center ice somehow see that this was a violent hit better than the ref directly on top of it, or was he the one that saw Pelech stunned and decided on his own that it must have been an illegal hit?

The hit was actually clean, but then physics took over. There was no obvious intent, just bad angles. From someone that has played hockey for decades I will scream it again, the helmets need to make a HUGE jump in technology, size and how they protect. So many head injuries in hockey from hitting your head on the boards or the ice.
@iammarkstewart

@@iammarkstewart Being able to read the rules doesn't mean you understand them. It was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit on the puck carrier. There was no obvious intent. I would suggest a large percentage of concussions in hockey are caused by the head striking the boards or ice when a player is falling. Players can't slow down to evaluate what will happen when physics takes over after contact. Having played for decades, and a few years at some decently high levels, I can tell you that behind closed doors players wouldn't consider this a dirty or overly violent hit.
@iammarkstewart
@iammarkstewart Жыл бұрын
@@giff74 I've never played at a high level but I've played all positions and officiated as well. I get players have a "feel" for what's acceptable. But since you and I don't play at the highest level at those speeds and with those consequences, I don't think anecdotal experience cuts it. Science and reporting continue to enlighten people on how often injuries are occurring, and more and more interviews with retired players, or about dead ones, make this concerning to me. And knowing the rules is important; even if you didn't like this call, that they called it roughing is ridiculous to me. I don't know if it's lack of support from the NHL, too many new refs too quickly, or just talking bs about player safety, but the scope of ability in the NHL officiating is too wide. Also, when you "suggest a large percentage of concussions in hockey are caused by the head striking the boards or ice when a player is falling"...that's exactly what happened here in a hit that Bortuzzo intended to deliver in the known danger area relative to the boards. You've contradicted yourself.
@giff74
@giff74 Жыл бұрын
@@iammarkstewart I realized how he hit his head. My point was that in the immediate moment prior to the check being delivered, how would the checking player calculate the outcome??? That's why it's a clean shoulder on shoulder hit and not boarding. The roughing was called, as we both know, for the officials to save face on a head injury. I totally agree with you that the NHL as a whole is NOT taking head injuries serious and that helmets should get WAY better and maybe even bigger (think NFL size). I also think feel NHL offciating is crazy inconsistent these days and the refs are nervous about not making a call after a head injury and being in the spotlight. Having said all of that, I still strongly feel that the vast majority of shoulder to shoulder or shoulder to chest hits are clean and no athlete in any sport at any level should be held accountable for the physics that take over after that if there was no ill intent. Beyond that we'll just have to agree to disagree I suppose.

The League needs to reconsider how hits like this are penalized... intentional or not, if you hit someone and then need to go to the quiet room you should be ejected. Concussions are devastating injuries and people underestimate how severe and long lasting the impacts can be.
@giff74
@giff74 Жыл бұрын
Concussions are horrible, but you can't base penalties on physics or saying "the player should have thought about.." There is not enough time to consider so many possibilities during the game. The hit was actually clean, but the applied physics made for a bad outcome.

@@Pikolika bortuzzo was committed to the hit before he started falling. It was a split second thing. Sometimes things happen. There’s no controlling that. There wasnt anything malicious here at all. @tyronebiggums1213
@tyronebiggums1213 Жыл бұрын
That’s a bad take because the cleanest play in hockey could result in any injury including concussions and every player in the league know that risk also knowing that this is a collision sport and even if you took out checking and fighting there would still be devastating injuries regardless. Let me ask you this if somebody is texting on their phone and walks into the street while you are stopped and not moving at a red light and that idiot walks into your car and breaks their toe, should you be held liable for something that wasn’t malicious or even a crime just because somebody put themselves in a vulnerable position and got hurt and you happened to be involved but not necessarily responsible for the result? The hit was hard for sure, but there is no penalty in hockey for playing hard as long as no rules are broken which is why they called roughing because they realized after the fact that no rule was actually broken and once they raise their arm for a penalty they have to call something.
