Now you know why we’re so passionate about Lovebites. There is no band performing and recording on their level at this moment in time. I bought the deluxe edition of the best of (to date) album released two days before Christmas in Japan. That edition had one cd more than the next one down the option list, and was the most expensive, being made to order. But having heard Painkiller only because of the odd comparison made with certain sections of Lovebites tracks (and decided it is the metal National Anthem) I had to have it. I knew, before I put the CD in and donned my headphones, I *knew* that this is what it would sound like. I *knew* they’d replicate it as closely as they could and I also knew that the sheer difficulty of the music wouldn’t be an obstacle to them making a kickass version. Nightwish took “High Hopes” by Pink Floyd and (don’t hit me) improved it. I’m realistic enough to understand that Painkiller is quite possibly the best metal track ever recorded. Nobody, not even Priest, could improve it. But Lovebites did the next best thing. They equalled it, although whether Asami, whom I idolise, can be compared to Rob Halford even I will question. But instrumentally, Lovebites nailed this. I don’t think there is another combination of musicians playing this genre for a living (ie not various session musicians) who could.

correction: this Painkiller cover was played live by Lovebites in a private concert in Japan reserved for the fan club. This was the last track from a concert that was played at Veats SHIBUYA in Tokyo on November 23, 2019. No video was released from this concert. Besides if there was only one video to make of this concert it would be this title there. It is criminal not to have recorded this live. It would have made a good calling card.

I really appreciate reacting to Lovebites and spreading the word, because they deserve more recognition. These women are extremely talented, skillful, versatile and proficient musicians. Many people say that they are the best metal band in decades in the world, and I agree. I discovered this band two and a half years ago and I’m still in owe. Some people wonder if they are aware of how good they are. Those twin lead guitar solos by Midori and Miyako are already legendary, in just six years. By the way, Miyako is a concert level pianist and Asami used to sing R&B, jazz and soul music before she joined Lovebites.

Who would have ever thought that anyone would do a better cover of this song than Death. Well, although it's close, Lovebites version is better.
