Adam catches up on the Eaglemoss Ghostbusters Ecto-1 model kit with the intricate engine assembly. In this condensed build update, he guides us through his painting and weathering process, using a mix of oil washes and rub-n-buff wax highlights to make this scale model look like a beat-up and grimy piece of 50s machinery!

I have two versions of the car in 1\18 by Mattel, I love the film seen it many times, and I mean many times. Pity about the turd one , sorry dad pun. But the Cadillac is a V8 not a V12 as they couldnt see any use of continuing with the V12 of engines after WW2, as they were marinised and used in the PT boats during the war. #PT109 most famous for its commander.

@@ChristopherCobra Have your vices but the time the movie came out Ray woulda been the same age if not older than my dad (Dan Aykroyd is actually 2 years older in real life). That puts him as a teen in the muscle car years. Most teen males back then worked and hopped their cars up. Dad wound up being a mechanic for 40 years with no formal training. I learned how to work on cars from him so I still stand by what I said. Hell I'm a licensed electrician and still teaching my 12 y/o and 4 y/o how to tinker and hop up engines. My oldest first car is a 59 gmc he is restoring sitting on a 84 olds delta 88 chassis with a ls1 under the hood. My 4 y/o wants my nova so I guess I gotta detune it and start to work on my 50 buick.

Just to answer the question that I had: This kit is 141 "issues", which come 4 per month at $10.90+$2.45 shipping ($13.35) per issue. That's $53.40/mo for right about 3 years. Factoring in that the first two issues are just $1.95 with free shipping, all told this model will set you back $1857.00, provided you don't feel the need to paint any of the parts (and don't already have the paint on hand). However, there's a swtich on the dash to turn on the headlights, the brake lights come on when you press the brake pedal, and from the photos it looks like the windows roll down using the handles. It's an insanely detailed model.
@gravityisweak
@gravityisweak 4 жыл бұрын
Not really happy about the strangely convoluted pricing they seem to have going on. Maybe they figured the sticker shock will scare people away. It's certainly a great and detailed model but I'm wondering how many people will pay for the full thing. At least you can pay what you want and just go for pieces i suppose.
@ReverendTed
@ReverendTed 4 жыл бұрын
@@gravityisweak I agree that it seems like they've deliberately obfuscated the total cost. You have to head to the bottom of the page to the FAQs and then click another button to show hidden questions in order to get the details. Even then you have to do the math yourself. Also, there are subscription bonuses for certain numbers of completed months, but you lose your "progress" towards those if you cancel your subscription. You can "pause" your subscription, but it says you have to call customer service to do that, and I'm curious what terms they have for pausing. The subscription model really seems directed toward getting people into the model (especially with the $1.95 for the first two, probably to ensure they have a working credit card for you) and then by the time they've realized what they're in for...what, you're going to stop with 1/3 of the Ecto-1? It also mentions (on the Ecto-1 or the Delorean, I forget which) extra paid subscriber bonuses that they'll tell you the details as they approach and give you a choice whether or not you want them shipped. It's an extra charge you have to opt-out of, if I'm reading it correctly.

I really hope he puts a light coat of varnish on it once he has it assembled and uses a fan to blow some fine dirt onto it. Nice job! Cadillac used a 472 or 500 cubic inch V8 in their ambulances. These were the largest motors Cadillac ever built. Sadly Floquil paints went out of business and are no longer available. I didn't use them much in the past 20 years as they are toxic as Hell. I did use them on resin even as just a primer because they were the only paint that stuck reliably to resin kits. We didn't see any close ups before you weathered, but it looks like the block was Cadillac Dark Blue which was Caddy's standard factory finish for engine blocks, intake manifolds and valve covers from 1949-1976. Of course Peter Venkman probably had his mechanic send the valve covers out to be chromed!

Use some black paint on the undercarriage and bottom pan of the transmission to show a rear main seal. It needs to appear very streaky but not major. As you'd want to also show lots of road grime on those areas the rub and buff will do well but those old Caddy V8's do tend to "mark their territory", much like old VW's.

Any other car guys going.... Sure hope one of the next kits include the plug wires, because that Ecto-1 isn't going anywhere! 😁 Love how it has the plug caps on the distributor and the wire mounts on the valve covers... but no wires!

Looks fantastic!! It needs cables from the distributor to the spark plugs.

I personally would say the exhaust manifolds should have more like a rusty finish. I dunno how it's in case of this particular engine but usually these parts are made of cast iron and they tempt to get this red brownish color. The engine looks pretty realistic all in all but the exhaust manifolds wouldn't be that shinie, silvery ^^ just my opinion. Keep it up! Can't wait to see more!

Looks like great work 👍. Just a suggestion: How about an overhead shot - a closer view of the parts as you construct them?

Makes sense to weather the engine but I like to believe that the Ghost Busters has a badass engine that's just built very well and maintained.

Hi Adam I love your video, I made a lot of Macross model kits and paint them. I want to give you a very humble recommendation for you videos when you pain, try tu use a go pro cámara on your head and we can see when you paint and see the details. Cheers from Brisbane Australia

I learned some interesting quick little techniques in this video Adam. My only comment is that the distributor should be either all black or an orange reddish brown as they are made out of Bakelite or a heavy plastic. If they were metal the car wouldn't run. (It's the part with the 9 wires coming out of it on the back top of the engine)

Exhaust manifold is not rusted enough. They are usually cast iron. And this car lived in NY. So nearly 0 shine on them... that is unless the manifold is Aluminum! Also get some small (.22 cal BB's) and put 1 or 2 in each paint jar to act as an agitator. Did this will all my Testors and Vallejo paints but with standard BB's cause the jars a smaller.

Those screws and driver are probably JIS, we run into those on Kyosho rc cars, and Phillips drivers don't fit them right, the nose angles are different. Some people slightly blunt the end of the Phillips to help it work, but JIS drivers are the best option

@Adam, the first thing you painted was the head. The thing you keep calling a head gasket, is called a valve cover.
