I personally would have used some small rubber feet on it instead of the VHB. With the weight of the block, that should be more than enough to keep it in place, and allows it to move a little when the machines vibrate in use. Plus you can just pick it up if you need to move it for maintenance/replacement. Also most Home Depots now carry butcher block countertops in store these days.
@Stettafire
@Stettafire Жыл бұрын
I was also concerned about the vibrations. Washing machines vibrate a LOT. So to have something in a fixed position sitting on top of two of them sounds a bit problematic. On the butcher block hardware shop though... it depends on locale. Maybe these things are easy to find in the US but over here you'd pay a royal prenium for butcher block countertops when you could buy the timber and make one yourself for a third of the price.
@ffdtower1
@ffdtower1 Жыл бұрын
I'd be afraid I'd have to pull it out for maintenance/repair etc. I'd just use a couple of lengths of the waffle style rubbery shelf/drawer liner. It works great for holding workpieces in place.

also, you're mechanically coupling the two machines, which both vibrate. I have a feeling the system as a whole will be noisier this way.

I just did a very similar upgrade! But I decided to suspend the butcher block over the machines as I was worried about vibration. Additional utility: I fabricated a rather attractive metal and wood hanging rack above - on a pulley system. So good to get these spaces right in the house. Defo going to steal those laundry organization cubbies from you Adam!

"Bowling alley floor"- I've never heard that but it's a good description. Most retailers call that "butcher block" even though it's not real butcher block. I wanted to build a table for my office to use as a desk, I couldn't find a premade piece in the size and cost range I wanted to I made my own by laminating strips cut from 2x6 lumber. It's not as precisely made as the commercial material but I have the pleasure of knowing that I made it.

I essentially did the same thing with my washer/dryer but the way I handled the gap was to add a raised shelf over the gap. I have a bit more room in my space so I was able to add a pullout shelf drawer between the two units and did a faux panel on the exposed side of the units with a hidden door for acces to the back of the dryer. For acces of the top, the raised shelf is held in with a clear on one side and a hidden screw accessible via the hidden door on the side. The whole thing looks like a built in, but it was actually supper simple to build.

I had an old Lakeside stainless steel table from a butcher shop. The work surface was kind of cold and didn’t really feel nice to work on, so I built a top out of one of these butcher blocks for it. I had enough after cutting it to size that I was able to use as a matching backsplash about 6” tall. I used lag screws and washers from the underside of the stainless surface to secure it. I love the much more substantial and warm feel it has now. Almost too nice to work on. (Almost!)

Not that anyone cares, but as someone from the kitchen world, I appreciate Adam really making sure to correctly categorize the slab as bowling alley style versus butcherblock. Butcherblock can come in a variety of sizes, but the most crucial aspect is that end grain is up. Why Adam may have had trouble finding that type of slab is because unfortunately the big blue and orange box stores don't care as much, and refer to what he uses as butcherblock counter tops, and it irks me to no end. Rant over, this video is great, Adam is awesome, whoever is reading this, have a great day!

"To each his own," I thought, but the part that had me concerned was there didn't seem to be enough room to pull them out all the way. Meaning, I guess, that you'd have to wait for the _rigor mortis_ to wear off before moving the bodies? 😎

Another name for that sort of board, here in the UK is "timberboard". Used it a fair bit myself, it can be a little challenging to find truly LARGE or thick boards. But, with a bit of creative doweling and biscuit jointing you can combine boards that are too narrow and/or thin to makeup larger/thicker boards if needed!

I'm building a replacement shelf in our laundry room. There wasn't a stud on the far edge of the shelf and the particle board shelf started to take on an inverted curve. The wood is recovered wood from the front steps of the house (The house was built in 1920 and the front steps were in rough shape when I bought it) I used a wheelbarrow as an improvised saw horse at cut the board at 52 inches. After gluing, sanding and painting the shelf will be put in place.

The only problem I can see with you putting a piece of wood on top of those two pieces of equipment is If the washer ever has an unbalanced load, it could potentially shake it loose or worse damage the top of the washer, so just keep that in mind if you don’t have an overloading issue, then you’re probably good to go.

Adam, no idea about how the washing machines work in California but here in Europe I certainly would not attach anything directly to or on top of one. Once they start the spinning cycle, they tend to jump and vibrate around, especially if not fully or evenly loaded. I can't imagine that board is going to help matters - it will likely beat the crap out of the surface of both your machines and possibly the wall once the dance starts. If you want such folding table, fix the board either to the wall or on legs around the machines so that the vibrations won't transfer to it.

Just a couple things, I would've put a lip on the under side to slot over the machines, and also most appliances have screw in/adjustable feet for leveling them. And last but not least you could've made the backsplash a bit taller with a top that slides all the way to the wall which would've made a sort of mini shelf 👍

Definitely thought the table was gonna be folding… not a folding table. I was waiting to see the hinges and how it was going to work with the space but this makes much more sense. 🤣

Right, I thought the same exact thing... "when is he gonna decide this would be better if it folded??" Until he started taping it down and I had to go read the title again.

I understand the need for flexibility, but you might want to revisit this design soon Adam. If your washer/dryers have any wobble to them while in use, the top might end up sliding off from the vibrations. You could solve it by building a back and sides surround for the machines that you can attach the top to. essentially, it would be a cupboard that encloses 4/5 faces of the machines and allow the top to float above them.

Thank you for clamping before continuing the cut of the groove for the rabbet.

I love this episode of "One Day Builds" meets "This Old House". You even hit my TOH red button in which someone mentions poplar and I'm obligated to say "It's a very poplar choice." 😎😆

Instead of tape you could use forstner bits and embed some rare earth magnets, since washer/dryers are usually steel

Funny the variety of things people keep such as I have no wooden clothes pins at my house but I have a box of about 50 shims. Awesome quick upgrade

Dang, I'd love to get my hands on one of those prefab'd wooden tops and make a new computer desk. I can't stand melamine board. Birch Ply would be my next best thing, but I fancy the look of that top. Staining & finishing that would be my jam!

turned out nice only thing I wonder is how that will effect both machines with the vibration over time as well as how long it will stick

Adam you might want to level that dryer with its feet. They screw in and out for that purpose. That clothes pin will vibrate out eventually.

I'm going to have to invest in a track saw, or make rails for my current circular saw to run between. Git rid of any wiggling or slight veering I do. I curl to left it seem, same when I bowl.
