Adam Savage’s Tested

Adam has recently been binging and enjoying Netflix's The Crown, and builds a prop he imagines would fit in the show's portrayal of Buckingham Palace. In the show, Queen Elizabeth makes use of a buzzer to ring in guests and heads of state for meetings, so today's prop build is Adam's take on what that instrument would look like if he made it for the palace using technology from 100 years ago!

Hey Adam I didn't work at the palace but I worked at The Goring a old hotel that is next to the palace and as a chef on a number of occasions served the Queen and the rest of the family I have seen a few items of royal provenance over the years and think the Royal Family would definitely approve of your mobile bell only thing I will say is most old houses and castles in the UK are wired with bells in all the rooms for butler's and maids to respond too The private dining room that the royal family used to eat in when they dined in the hotel even had a concealed and button under the table to announce when the family was ready for clearing and the next course just thought yo may be interested. As always a pleasure watching you I do have more stories if you are interested spent about 2 years working in London and have enough stories for a lifetime.

Not sure about the history of the Queen's bell, but I have seen other devices like this in the past, and they existed for one very specific reason. If you had that footman standing outside the room waiting for a hand bell to be rung, he would need to hear everything that went on inside the room. By using a remote bell, rung electrically, the room can be soundproof. Similar to the reason that some of the secure areas I have worked in did not have the same fire alarm system that existed in the rest of the building. The main system used speakers. Those speakers could be turned into microphones. So they were not permitted in the secure area. In the secure area, there are only strobe lights and mechanical bell ringers.
@itarry4
@itarry4 Жыл бұрын
They've used pull cords for hundreds of years to summon servants. There'd be absolutely no reason for the queen or any rich old English family to use a hand bell accept in situations where they want the butler or other close. No electricity needed just a long piece of string or wire to a bell hung on the wall.

If Adam hasn't yet visited Beaulieu in the amazing New Forest in Hampshire, England it should be on his bucket list. Not only do they keep all the old cars made on BBC Top Gear over the years (Including the Reliant Robin 3-wheeler they tried to send into space), but the old house on the grounds serves as a living museum with period actors going about their day as tourists wander around. In the Kitchen of this old mansion they have all the servants bells - a whole wall of bells (maybe 20-30 bells) each hung on a spiral spring, each corresponding to a room in the house. It lets the staff know when and where they are needed.

@22:45 This is how me and my wife usually plan out furnishing whenever we move to a new place. We take measurements of all the furniture and cut out to scale pieces of paper to then be able to overlay ontop of the scale plans for the apartment. This is exactly my mums approach. Except the fireplace is also a cutout and gets moved from one side of the room to the other. Then it gets changed from a normal sized one to one straight out of a Tudor Mansion, complete with fire-crane and huge oak beam above it. So that gets built and the next thing to get the 'slidey paper' treatment are the windows. I kid you not. My dad hid the squared paper she always uses (after the windows got moved). Third fireplace position, second chimney position, third fireplace (one got used in two locations).

I do have some information on the bells in Windsor Castle. They are all hardwired in, some are directly attached to a wall or floor, while others are on a lead and run to a plug. Just as people have coaxial or ethernet, there are dedicated bell plugs. They have two pins and look similar to lamp plugs. They run off to cupboards on various floors and into red flag boxes, not the jingling bells you see in dramas. They were installed by a company called T Clark who also did St James Castle. I assume that Buckingham Palace is wired similarly, Prince Philip was the architect for a grand plan of modernisation to the systems of the royal residences including a PA system. Much of the palace was wired in the late 1940s and in 2018, the family moved out to Balmoral and a massive rewiring effort went ahead. They removed some 2km of vulcanised Indian rubber cabling, and replaced the heating and plumbing at the same time. I imagine they'll have installed something a little more modern now, likely linked into the modern replaced PA system which runs over ethernet. At Balmoral, they apparently use a modern wireless solution now with a button very similar to that of a doorbell. It is indicative of the smaller and more homely of the royal residences where less import is placed on tradition such as electric fireplaces and televisions. As for The Crown, I believe the bells did not attach to anything. It was just some wire that ran under a table and stopped. I love this creation of yours, it would make for an excellent idea if the Queen was traveling at the time. The ship Britannia was also fitted with servant's bells, but I'm sure there were a variety of situations where the Queen could have had use of such a device.

I don't know if Adam will read this. I hope he does, but when I was very little my dad and I used to watch mythbusters together. Him and my godfather were both huge nerds, an engineer and mathematician respectively. and would ramble on for hours just the way Adam does. Right now my dad lives in a different country for me and I lost my godfather to cancer only a few months ago, and watching tested and answers to Patreon questions really just hits a very emotional spot in a good way because it reminds me of how both of them, especially my godfather, would go on these long tangents that meandered through million topics just over one question. and I just wanted to thank him for that and for shaping my interest in and appreciation of just... figuring stuff out to make weird projects happen.

The king of the one off. That brown corded flex is spot on from the UK 50's, lamps ect. , as used in many Agatha Christies novels . . Inspired buy your abilities to construct, casting some clear resin into a sunburst hanging basket bracket frame, going to seal the uneven bottom with ply and trylon re-meltable pvc , then pour the stained resin. had the welded frame hot gal dipped and powder coated by a local gate company that send batches. Wish I had ground the welds flat before the coating, had to notch the ply to lay flat . pvc it tomorrow. Love the adventure of materials. Since 2010 Liz has a Bluetooth transmitter in the end of her finger, she still uses the bell for the Danish kings so as not to be indebted. Stay safe.

Adam, that is my doorbell! It makes me jump every time… I love it as a project, but, but, but… The late Duke was a patron of modern design and industry, witness the Land Rover he had converted into a hearse /gun-carriage to carry his coffin. Ah yes, you might say, just look at the decorations commissioned for the Coronation at Westminster Abbey, or perhaps for Prince Charles's investiture as Prince of Wales. There is a whole other decorative design tradition going on there. It raises all sorts of other design issues? Certainly got me thinking. Thanks Adam (and the team) for an amazing 'siege' year.

Is that Queen Victoria's? I have seen that one and it would be amazing to watch someone try and re-create it.

@@paulotoole4950 Oh! Good question. Now that think about it the one I was thinking of was Queen Mary's. It has electricity and all ^^ But Victorias is also amazing!

Cloth jacketed wire is known as push back wire. You don't need to strip the cloth, just push it back. It will bunch up and you have bare wire to do with as you will and then the jacket will cover up the connection.

You know I am totally o.k. with Adam not having the same interests as me because his interest in subjects makes everything he does extremely interesting. Yes. I know I just said "interests" in like three different ways and I'm ok with that too.

I have a similar fascination with Division Bells within (especially, but not uniquely) the UK Parliament. When there is a vote. Hundreds of networked bells are rung for a duration all over the buildings and even some outside but within distance of the lobbies. Im lucky enough to own one of the two extras that were made when they were replaced in the 60's. Its my favourite posession but always tempted to build a few more and get a network of them going.

My friend's house had a buzzer button built into the dining room floor by the hostess' chair so that she could signal the butler's pantry and kitchen to serve the next course or to have a maid attend the table. Iit was hidden under the dining room carpet to be discrete. Several rooms were rigged with bells that rang in the servants' room and the kitchen.

Adam, here's a tip for stripping cloth insulated wire: use cellophane tape to cover where the cut will happen, and use a sharp x-acto knife or scalpel to cut the insulation. Fraying avoided!

I think retractable cables like this are one of the neatest inventions ever, storing the energy used pulling the cord out efficiently enough that it can be released later to reverse the process with no additional energy in such a neat and tidy way.
