With the newly expanded workshop, Adam reclaims his second Shenwai lathe and sets it up for use with a new custom machine tools cabinet. The lathe itself is due for a cleaning and Adam puts its components through his parts washer and gives it a tune up before spinning it up!

Big motor on the same line. Kinda like having water run down a pipe and flowing at one end you open up another tap in between and until the flow equalizes, the waterflow on the end is lesser.

It's probably a capacitor start motor. They build up a lot of current and then dump it all at once to kickstart the motor.

At the Heritage railway i used to work at the shop lights would flicker when we started the big lathe, it was like 4500mm between centers and 700mm over bed.

No one but me cares, but I just started a project to reorganize our attic space, which was previously an unusable pile of stuff. I've installed shelving, and purchased identical storage boxes in various sizes that we are now transferring said stuff into from the random (and always far too large) storage that was previously utilized. The images of your sortimo walls were absolutely an inspiration. I also have 1" white gaffer tape to label the everything. It is glorious!

Adam, as a proud Aussie I love how you show gratitude to CEE and his love for quality tooling and work. I can only hope that you and Curtis find a way to do a collaboration one day or you guys get to do a face to face one day and talk shop. It's just a hard question as to who's shop you meet at because I know either way someone's mind will be blown. May I also suggest a bunch of soft close sliders for your drills and anything else you place under the lathe. Short risers will work for the sliders to keep the light even across your storage area.

Thanks to you, every shelf and cabinet in my apartment and "dining shop" is now lit up. Absolute game changer. Things don't pile up because they're hidden in a dark corner, I see what I'm doing and fix it on the spot or get a constant reminder to do so. So much easier to find things as well! I took it a step further. Underside of my computer desk is also lit up now. Things don't get tossed down there and forgotten and when the crumbs/cat hair become visible I'm quick to vacuum now. For this small but useful thing, you have my deepest gratitude. I'm horribly lazy, this has massively helped me maintain some level of cleanliness and organization.

I have a small Jet 13x40 I bought new in 97. Been an amazing tool and paid for its self a 1000 time over. It’s really heavy and has two cabinets on either end where I keep hundreds of pounds of round drops and my chucks. I love this cabinet you built. I believe you bought a new lathe since this video was shot. It sounded like my main Sharpe mill that needs swapped out with a good one I don’t use because of space problems. Thanks for sharing and inspiring. You rock

The 1st cabinet I put a light in was a bathroom corner sink cabinet in 1998, when I was remodeling my 1st house. I'd been building/installing cabinets as a remodeler for 30+ years & had never thought of it before. Now, I can't understand why ALL lower cabinets don't have lights. I worked my way thru the bathroom & kitchen putting lights in the lowers. Now that I'm officially ancient & my eyes struggle w/ light transition, I'm even more pleased I did. What cabinets I have after the shop remodel I'm in the midst of, will get lighting, as well. But I'm moving from cabinets to a full wall open shelving design & getting rid of half my cabs. Most remaining cabs will be drawer cabs

Adam, it appears that you have that lathe wired for ~110V and plugged into a power strip(as seen being unplugged around 15:37) with other things, if I'm not mistaken that lathe has a ~1HP motor in it which likely has a nameplate rating of around ~12.6A at 110V(unless the motor has been swapped of course), per NEC 430 and assuming it has a 1HP motor that lathe should be on its own 15A circuit @~110V. Please check the motor nameplate rating and adjust how the lathe is connected to power for safety sake. You could also rewire the motor connections for 220V(it should be a dual voltage motor) and supply it with an appropriate 220V circuit. At least eliminate the power strip between the lathe and the power source, between starting current and current under load when machining something, that power strip is not likely to be happy.

Personally I wouldnt have put the drillbits at the bottom, now you need to bend down, get it out of there, get the one you need, then put it back. Maybe if it was on rails, so you can just 1 handedly pull it out, get the bit and push it back. But I do always enjoy watching your videos :D Very entertaining to watch you figure things out.

I'd setup the second lathe for CNC operations. It's easy and it opens up some tasty possibilities. Depending on how profesh the upgrade is, it can be expensive, but you can 100% make it on the cheap, including second hand parts and DIY componentry.

It’s far more sensible for someone like Adam to buy a used cnc lathe. It is by no means easy, and the usefulness is limited for him retrofitting an old lathe is almost never worth it, for a multitude of reasons.

I enjoy this process and love that Adam always finds a way to add extra storage to the shop that is also very useful for him in terms of retrieval. However, being sat here with a very sore back right now, I can think of nothing worse than having to bend down to get everything from this new cupboard! 😂

Hey Adam, Suggestion - You could PIVOT the TWO LATHES to form a U SHAPED LATHE PIT - Lathes facing each other. Then you would not have to walk around into the Hardware Store to use the smaller lathe. You could out the Chucks and common Accessories at the end of the U SHAPED PIT to close it off from the Hardware section and gain more area there. Regardless - Love the reorganization - you are an amazingly patient man - I would have lost what's left of my mind.. ;)

Great work Adam; your cabinet was elegantly simple in construction. I noticed your lights dimming when you turned the lathe on; I think this indicates power sharing between differently-rated circuits. With a complex set-up such as your workshop(s), it is probably worth reviewing your electric supply circuits and/or advice from a clever Sparkie, who may recommend upgrading sections of the supply cables. Something beyond my skills to do, but then most of my tooling is hand or battery powered!

Gotta love R2 with a western revolver belt on 😂😂 I actually want to see this movie now lol I also love your approach to a build, you write it and plan it up, like it was an custom order for someone else to build, then you fulfil that order to the best of the "clients" schematics. That is by far the best way to get the best results, i can't count the times i've dropped something because of the thought "it's just for myself, nobody cares". But, going into it with the idea that it's for someone else, makes me want to make it 101% perfect and I'm equally 101% satisfied with it afterwards. It even helps if you record yourself, doesn't really matter that nobody's ever going to watch it but, the idea in the back of your head, that you're "on", makes you perform 101%. Btw, is that rain in the background? That's some next level madness downpour... PS: LOVE it when you talk to your R2, i would be talking to him all the time, probably add a voice activated module so he answers randomly 😂

to the point of expanding tools and expanding spaces, or shedding tools and compacting space, I think its a continuum of waves of expanding your world by adding tools to your toolbox, then finding what works in your world and what is excess. Sometimes you want to reduce what you do each day to gain expertise and focus, and other times you want to expand your world and learn new things, new tools, new processes, or to refine and redo processes to make those processes you currently know and make them better through a kaizen process. Upgrades, maintenance, expansion, focus... its all a big cycle of life. Happy Tooling!

Before taking the gearbox apart check the play between the interchangable gears! Its common that people leave not enough play between gears when switching them out! gears should have some play. Put some drops of oil on the gears after adjusting. 9/10 times its tight gears that cause that sound! If that does not help, check if the main bearing for the chuck spindle needs adjustment. I have a lathe in that class. If you remove the spindle, be sure you have the belt in place before you slide the spindle back in. I missed that step the first time😯 so I had to immediately remove it a second time😖 I'll be interested to see how you preload the spindle bearings.

I am sure this has been suggested but I think you need to move your table saw to the new hardware store area. You could build sweet outfeed table with tons of storage and place it right where one of your work tables are located currently. Outfeed tables with table saws greatly increase efficiency as well as safety. It would almost be no consequence unless you can't seem to keep it clean.

nice build That Shenwai sounds excat likes mine from 1978 when the feed is engaged. the smal gears running again the spindel sounds terible and trhe 127 tooth gear sings its own song. the build in poulies are on an extra frame behind the headstock. great lathe use it every week.

I've been using a small Grizzly G0704 Mill for around 10 years in my shop and just recently found a good deal on a 1974 Bridgeport Series 1. I have been on the fence on what to do with the Grizzly since it does come in handy, but "Do I really need 2 mills?" I think I was just talked into keeping it, lol.

There are differences in lathes 4:09 that I consider a deal breaker in some cases. I learned on Colchesters and the handwheel arrangement on that type of lathe. If I try to use a Harrison lathe which has a handwheel configuration that is opposite to the Colchesters, it feels completely alien to me.

I think you should have a backsplash behind the lathe (plexi?) so that fluids are better contained. Also, I like using 3D-printed stands for Morse taper tooling so the tapers don't bang around and get 'bruised'. Personally, I would have made the cabinet ~8 inches shorter so that the top could be an open shelf for stuff you need at hand (like a lathe file). But I love the idea of lights!

Hey there Adam. I just needed to say that you're the epitome of who and where I want to be in life. My dream has always been to combine my 3 favorite things of making things, helping people, and electronics to help design bionic/cybernetic replacement parts for the human body. Sadly, after my 22k gal bladder surgery, heart issues, and the fracture in my back that I'm talking with the doctor today about surgery options, i don't believe I'll get to that dream. At the bare minimum I found hope in being the kind of person my partner and daughter deserve to be whether that's in a wheel chair or not and that's you. You always bring a smile to my heart and I am happy that i finally found my role model after being asked that question oh so long ago in 1st grade. I wish you and yours all the best and much love. Clean the gears, replace worn bearings, and CHECK that the knobs/levers are installed correctly for selecting thread pitch and not reinstalled upside down.
