The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a rally version homologation special of the fifth generation European Ford Escort. It was designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship, in which it competed between 1993 and 1998. It was available as a road car from 1992 until 1996. The powertrain was only fitted to this version of the Escort, a longitudinally mounted Cosworth YBT, a highly tunable turbocharged 2.0 L (1,993 cc) with a bore x stroke of 90.8 mm × 77 mm (3.57 in × 3.03 in) Inline-four engine[1][2] which had an output of 227 PS (167 kW; 224 bhp) in standard trim. Tuning companies have achieved power outputs in excess of 1,000 bhp (746 kW; 1,014 PS)

I can't get over how professional your videos have become. You've done away with that irritating background music and gone straight in with close ups of the work being done. Detailed filming showing your work, good points, mistakes, things to look out for. These videos are good ... VERY good!

Before you pull the head off I would check the water jacket parts of the inlet manifold, I used to be a technician @ Ford in the late eighties/early nineties and had quite a few vehicles where the antifreeze had solidified from having too strong a mix and blocked the chambers to the cylinder head from the inlet manifold causing the same sort of fault.

its never just that, if that had enough gunk in it to be blocked there is plenty of crap in the rest of the system. it needs a full clean/flush. Use somthing like holts rad flush. The cooling section of the turbo will be partially blocked, you dont want to kill the turbo next.

The best way to check a radiator isn't blocked is to the the car run up to temp and feel the rad all over to make sure there is no cold spots , filling it with water means nothing it could be half blocked and would still flow water from a hose pipe fine . I wouldn't be too worried even if it was the head gasket its a £200 job at most if your doing it your self . at least its hopefully sorted now though and another job ticked off the list

Fuel pump relays on Fords were a problem, looking fine, but opening it up you could see the broken trace and burnt board, having said that I'll bet almost every electrical connection will be corroded to some extent, electrical contact cleaner and checking for broken wires,

Hello Adam From what you describe as the car driving for a very short time ie 5mins and simply cutring out i had the exact same problem on an Escort Cosworth i used to own. I was diagnosed as the Crank Postion Sensor and this was replaced to which the problem was immediately rectified .. the air intake sensor was also replaced as well as a minor precaution. Hope you get it sorted soon and resolve the issue 👍

The cutting out issue…..I heard of similar on I believe a Sierra XR4i. Someone had plugged a relay intended for heated rear window into the fuel pump relay position. Hence after so many minutes the car would cut out as the relay timed out. Worth a check if not done already. Thanks for the videos 👍👍

I'd change the crank sensor as already mentioned, not that expensive and was the fault on mine. The fuel filter if blocked can cause the hose to be sucked flat starving the fuel system. That also happened on mine when the car was 2 weeks old!

Nice job there. Good to see your doing your homework and not just throwing parts at it. Try a different furl pump relay. My mate had a Sierra with a similar problem. Have you checked the thermostat? Standing 6 years it can easily be stuck. Test it in boiling water. The turbo pipe would not stop flow through the radiator so i recon when you removed the stat you knocked it enough to free it off. I used to be a Ford RS tech. 🙂

I had a GTi that I got cheap as it kept cutting out. It turned out to be a dodgy fuel pump relay which was just making contact and no more. Car used to run fine but after about 5 mins the vibration caused the contacts inside the relay to fail. It’s a cheap thing to check. Good luck.

Adam check the crankshaft position sensor as these tend to mass up and cause the cutting out issues! I have seen many that do this and there is no ryhme or reason but they run for 5 mins then cut out! then run for 5 mins and cut out! They can and will stop the car starting eventually!

I remember ordering my escort Cosworth bran new . The several months wait was nail biting . I picked it up 10am did not sleep all night and remember the dealer going through it all bla bla bla and all i wanted to do was get out of there with it and show it off . Insurance was £4200 and that in 1997 was mental . any way cut a long story short . I think i was out of there by 11ish and by 12ish I crashed into railings next to the train station full front end job .. was back on the road several weeks later after a 6 grand bill from fords but was never right kept popping drive shafts for months . love to know where she is now .

If that cars been standing for a good length of time it'll defo be needing a full flush from heater matrix to expansion tank. Using a water hose through the rad can be used to detect full blockages but it doesn't emulate what it's like when the system is running normally (under pressure) so it'll need a good heavy blast through. You can always check for cold spots when it's up to temp by hand. As for the cutting out, cam position/crank sensor or fuel pump as a few others have pointed out. Only other thing could be electrical, if it was cutting out at the exact same moment after firing it up then it may be the immobiliser kicking in for some reason? You're on the right track though, that car is gonna be a minter when it's done!

Nice work. The corrosion line on the water pump was because the car sat with low coolant and had air in the system. It was exposed to the air. Likewise the banjo bolt you replaced. The other banjo bolt was fine because it wasn't exposed to air. You may still have to remove the head for the same reason.

Well done on sorting the overheating problem. Maybe the engine was cutting itself off when it was getting hot, or evaporating the fuel before getting to the cylinder. The thermostat that you removed is the wrong one. The one you have removed is a 2wd style one. The 4x4 has a dual function and without it will over heat. Also you should be able to blow straight though the turbo water cooling pipes

Always use the simplest thing first mantra. In this case, if it was the head gasket the rad hoses would be very hard with the engine running, look for water in the oil or oil in the water, next, thermostat either sticking or faulty and not opening, next, water pump. I'm not sure of the type of pump it is but the impeller may be spinning on the shaft or it could be seized. Blocked rads are unusual. Also, check that the cooling fan works.
