I used to think I could not trust buying a second hand car here in the Philippines when we arrived here last August. But once I visited a well known car dealership that sells only used car here in Manila (Car Empire) I was dead wrong. They not only have a good selection , but their cars are sold as is and all I had to do was take it to the Toyota shop for a quick check up and its been good to me since day one. Just make sure to get it from a reputable dealer with some reviews from previous customers also helps. Once I knew their cars flew off the shelf once they posted them, I knew they were good.

What I do especially with major work is take a lot of pictures of everything that will be touched by the machanic . If anything is out of sorts or broken you have visual evidence. Stripped or broken bolts are issues as well because a torque wrench is a luxury in a mechanics tool box in the philippines. Electrical connections get brittle over time and if not removed carefully will break. Put cardboard under the car when you get home to look for leaks that you may not have had before. I recommend if you can afford it taking it to the dealer for work . If something does get broken they have access to the parts to fix it or if additional parts or gaskets they can get them.

This is very True Adam. I worked at Ford for 3 years and I saw a lot of brand new cars with a lot of problems so some times it's not always the new cars that are good it really depends on how you look after the cars and when buying a second hand car it's best to change everything like you have done most importantly to change the transfer case Oil in 4x4 and change both diff oils as well.

Car service is so much cheaper though in the Philippines compared in the States. When we bring our car to the mechanic it is usually over 500 dollars so before bringing it to the mechanic I always have a palpitation. In the Philippines I was so surprised of the charge when we had a repair there.

When buying a second car is a bit complex as one would loved because majority of reasons why they being sold is because there's a hidden issues with the car itself. And so, further deep comprehensive technical checks must be administered. After finding out that there's no issues the buyer needs to consider spare parts availability. There's a simple technique the owner can do to minimize the high cost of car repair and maintenance. For instance, the radiator coolants has many colors and many variants. It's best to chose the all in one coolant brand. A gallon of coolant that has anti rust, anti overheat, antifreeze and above all coolant plays a vital role in lubricating the seal of water pump inside the engine thereby extending it's life. One can just open the radiator cap and perform visual checks, if the coolant is still clear it will be just fine, no need to replace it because branded coolant was designed to run for 5 years. The same as the fuel filter, the owner can simply remove the clips, take it out, shake it a little bit and turn it upside down and if there's no visible dirt and the old fuel is still clear it will be just fine, blow it with compressed air and reinstall it. Changing engine oil is also very easy a 15 minute job but always make sure that the new oil filter is genuine because the life of the engine depends on it. Concerning timing belt, the owner can open the upper part of the timing cover, it's made of plastic with few bolts, perform a visual checks, timing belt teeth must not be falling apart, it's appearance should be firm and intact, and feel it by hand, if the belt is still soft not hard like a plastic but still it feels like a rubber and pinch it with your nail and you feel that you are pinching a rubber not a plastic then it is still good, no need for replacement it can still run for 1 or 2 yrs who knows maybe one decided to sell the car after 2 yrs it's still okey. So long as there's no hissing sounds when the engine is running it will be just fine. Thank you.

Why do some forget to maintain their vehicle for long lasting life or to "catch" things before the have an issue. I purchased an very old truck knowing that I would go through that same process even though their were maintenance records. I have only had two minor problems, windshield washing pump needed replacement, which I did and the cooling system needs service which will be done at our local shop that I have used for over 20 years. The owner/manager, Carlos knows our cars and knows their history and I have a sense of relief and trust with him. Be safe, stay safe and travel safe. 😎

Thank you my friend. It’s true and it’s the same in any country. If you don’t buy new you don’t 100% know the history unless it’s been maintained through reputable garages with full receipts etc. lots of people try to avoid maintenance on cars and then catch up later on. I’m ok with lack of service history as can do it all myself or find a good mechanic. The garage we used were great and professional. Take care my friend 😊

Hi Adam You did all the tight things. Buying genuine parts Asking to see the parts they removed. Initially you mentioned a timing chain which is a fairly complex job. The work including a timing chain replacement could be done by an experienced mechanic in ONE DAY. A timing belt is far simpler the only complexity is rotating the engine to Top Dead Centre fitting a Vee Wedge (cost about £15 in the UK) to prevent movement removing the old belt and fitting the new one. 2hrs max for a mechanic. Timing chain 6 hrs. Timing belt is a DIY job. An experienced mechanic should be able to complete all the work you listed in 4 hours. A DIY mechanic may need a couple of hours extra. I'm puzzled by the failure to flush the engine block when doing a coolant change. Although I work in IT now I trained as an engineer. My cousin and I restore classic bikes and cars as a hobby. He has an e-type jaguar we restored. I have a 1954 Vincent Black Shadow, a 1970's Triumph we restored and I'm currently restoring a MK2 Jaguar.

Hi Adam, always mark the parts you are having changed, if possible. I checked over my friends car for her, as I,m DIYer mechanic, taught by step dad a mechanic of 30 yrs plus. Garage said they had changed spark plugs for service. But upon checking them, I found the dots I put on them. They had put old plugs in boot, but from out the bin. I showed them my phone pics and they said it was a mistake. UK garages are rife with this sort of thing. Learn basic mechanics and service oneself.

I've always driven new cars here in Belgium. In Ormoc I twice bought a surplus Suzuki Carry, but these cars are very low on maintenance. I probably don't have the right profile to buy a used car, as I know absolutely nothing about mechanics. I've been a white colar worker all my life and when it comes to working with my hands I could win an award for clumsiness. I'm not sure I would buy a used car anywhere in the world, unless I know who the previous owner was and how he maintained the car. I'm sure the people who bought your Suzuki made a good purchase.

@@spottypigg8577 that's why the labor charges are good compared to the UK and why 90% of Filipinos don't own a car because here a car is exorbitant. I had a "light" service done last week on my Suzuki which cost P9500, but the average salary in Leyte where I live is only P8500 a MONTH. Last year a full service cost me P32,000. Imagine in England if a light service cost you about 5 weeks salary and a full service on the warranty cost you 4 MONTHS Salary?

sorry guys it's not a good idea to buy a used car in the Philippines, especially a foreigner parts stores are in no way closed, unless you are a good mechanic. Most cars sold in the Philippines are lemon!!!!! used from japan and cosmetically repaired for good looks!!!!
@AdamandJanesLifestyle
@AdamandJanesLifestyle Жыл бұрын
I don’t agree at all my friend. If you have knowledge of cars and buy the parts yourself online from reputable dealers then it’s ok. You can always check part numbers. Anyone who knows about cars will spot a fake or incorrect part immediately! Buying a used car in the UK is no different. My first car ever had hidden problems. You learn 😊

Thank you Bob. I really wanted to share our experiences as buying a second hand car here really isn’t a problem if you are willing to spend a little on maintenance. Parts here are very cheap but 100% genuine. At least on Japanese cars 😊

🤔 yep customer beware.. I'm a 30yr ase certified auto technician and I happen to specialize in timing belts. Those motors do not have to be removed in order to install a timing belt on those engines. Honestly it's a 1 day job.. but still a good deal on the labor costs. Just for the install cost in my shop for the belt alone is around 12k pesos. Probably looking at 14k for the whole job. And if you took it to a dealership here in the US you can double the 14k for your labor. So good deal and cool to see that shop, I stopped in there the last time me n the wife were there. Had to see how other parts of the world work on cars..

Thank you my friend. The garage is very busy and I think they overestimate the time it will take to manage customers expectations. The timing belt was likely done in 1 day and the other jobs in 1 day 😊

I have a question: can a foreigner buy under his name when he wants to buy second-hand in cash? Do you know what is requirements? TIA
@AdamandJanesLifestyle
@AdamandJanesLifestyle Жыл бұрын
Yes! A foreigner can easily buy and own a new or second hand car. You would need a solicitor to draft a letter of sale which is almost always prepared by the person buying the car however often the seller or garage will include this and arrange it 😊
