The liquid coming out of Aladdin Sane's shoulder is a teardrop that was painted on after the photo was taken. Bowie liked the addition and left it.

I knew it wouldn't be because it just wasn't practical to get the whole band to perform in his shoes. A bit like an episode of Blake 7 where they plan on invading an alien home world all episode but you know it's not going to happen because the BBC couldn't afford the sets.
