Mike Rowe stops by to talk about his new film ‘Something to Stand For’, the state of universities in America and, of course, dirty & dangerous jobs. They then discuss the recent outbreak of dumb rules worldwide in the name of ‘safety.’ They wrap the show talking about the lack of skepticism within today’s media and how everyone desperately needs a hobby.
For more with Mike Rowe:
Go see “Something to Stand For” in theaters June 27, 2024.

The Adam Carolla Show has saved my life by getting me out of depression. I thought I was the only one who thought this way until I discovered this podcast. I listen daily. Thank you Adam for keeping it real and for making me realize that I am not going crazy in this demented world we now live in. I am 60 years old. Luv Orny Adams too.... and you got Mike Rowe on this episode. Made my week! Thanks Adam! GOOD-DAY

Oddly enough, my dad looked and sounded just like him and was an incredible storyteller. As a kid I always ask him to tell us stories before bed, on road trips, and around the campfire. He was born in 1942, was an Eagle Scout, Marine, and had worked in many different states doing many different jobs, so he had an endless supply of stories. It was the best.

I went to trade school 4 years ago. Just a one year HVAC program, cost $9K including tuition, tools, etc. After just a few years on the job, I’m already making 90K. Should hit six figures in the next couple of years. Many of my coworkers who are good sales make $150-250K. It’s a decent life. 😆 Thanks Mike and Adam for the good advice!

That's great but I sometimes think that Mike acts like getting a higher education so that you don't have to do manual labor your whole life is wrong. Right wing media is constantly preaching this narrative. I worked in factories my whole life and my body is shot. HVAC can have the same effect on your body but that's perfectly fine if that's what you want. It should be perfectly fine to try to get higher education as well. That also benefits our country.

Mike Rowe is the man , he gave an epic speech at the national builders convention in Las Vegas 2 years ago . His message is my life . I had a learning disability and school was not my path . I dropped out of high school ,I was told I would go nowhere in life . I started working as a framer . Fast forward 20 years and I own a successful general contracting business, multiple homes and travel the world with my wife 2 months a year . I have zero debt and live with purpose and freedom. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. My idea of hell is being stuck in a cubicle , staring at a screen for 8 hours a day !

The problem is people that never work these dangerous jobs are making decisions on what is the safe way to do the job and that usually handicaps and slows the progress of the work itself. Then these ignorant people have you competing with others that don't have to follow the same rules and get things done faster.

I’ve worked in a few distribution centers and the problem is that the companies have or are required to have a safety supervisor to show that they care about safety. If this employee wants to keep his/her job they must continue to find ways for the workers to improve safety no matter how silly the suggestions are. We even have very expensive equipment designed to move product in a safer way but is not used because it takes too long to use. The safety supervisor just sits in his air conditioned office and has a meeting with the employees every few weeks. It’s the easiest way to make 70k a year.

Mike, one time I let my GPA slip to around 2.9. My father was scolding me fairly harshly and made the statement that all the way through college and medical school at Baylor University he maintained a perfect 3.0 grade point average. I laughed at him and said that's not a lot better than mine. Then he informed me that back in the 50s they were on a three-point grading system. That's when I discovered that he graduated magna cum laude. Universities didn't change to a 4 point grading system till late 60's.

I have enjoyed this show. I support Rowe with "vocational training" and elliquent speaking. I also have a newer respect for Carolla in his thinking and presentation. I did not know he had a background in construction until today. I retired from "the otther" education system, technical training . I started teaching in a middle school shop (TSA). Then, I moved to a high school lab that transformed from VICA to SkillsUSA, still the same thing. In my final position, I taught Architecture, Residential Construction, and Robotics. The program has grown to include a separate instructor for each of these trades.
