I believe you are a high performing free diving Adam, you bring a lot of people into the sport of free diving with your information and content. You be the best you can, it doesn’t matter to be the best because once you are on top, the competition spirit just isn’t there anymore. The big thing that keeps you performing the best, is keeping this sport alive and bringing a love for the ocean. Sadly I do not have time to practice free diving or spear fishing, nor do I live by an ocean out here in Arizona. I do practice breathing exercises from your videos from time to time though. But because of you, for the past year you have sparked my interest in trying to get back into it. I only got into free diving a bit when I was in Hawaii for a bit, and then I came back to the desert. Eventually I would love to meet you and free dive together, you are an inspiration for many people.

I also had my appendix taken out, then bled 2liters internally and needed a second open surgery and a week later developed and infection so i needed to go back to hospital. A week after that my doctor told me to comeback and then told me i had a 2cm neuroendocrine tumor (cancer) in my appendix and now i have had my hopefully last surgery to remove the last bits og cancer. So first i did 7weeks without diving and now i need to wait another 2weeks to go back out :( Iam very happy watching your videos :)

Hi Adam, are you aware of any free divers who have adopted a ketogenic diet? Starting at the beginning of 2019, I was a bit over weight, so I went to the "keto diet", and now get most of my "fuel" from ketones rather than glucose. Once I hit my weight goal, I decided to stay with the diet, because it makes me feel so much better. Additionally, I avoid grain-sourced carbs and all refined sugars. I tend to consume the lower glycemic-index fruits and veggies and stick to OMAD, One Meal A Day. Obviously, if I am taxing my system with this type training, I will need to increase my caloric intake on days I am training. As I begin this journey into free diving, I will be keeping a detailed log of diet and how I feel Day2day. Thanks for all the inspiring and informative videos, I really enjoy your style of delivery & adventures! Maybe we'll get to dive together some day, Cheers!

This information is so valuable, and your enthusiasm is contagious! I'm going to go make some oatmeal Right This Minute! I am *not* a freediver, but I want to have something closer to the kind of nimble fitness I enjoyed as a younger woman. I won't be able to "power eat" like you lovely young people, because I won't be using nearly that level of calories, but the anti-inflammatory and low mucous level of this kind of diet will be very, very helpful in managing my health and well-being. (I'm almost 60 and have health issues that preclude any kind of diving, but I was a *huge* recreational swimmer my entire youth, *decades* before the mermaid craze.)

Thanks for this vid.( Suggestions for your below.)Ive been snorkeling to 8m over the last couple of months and had been tracking diet and performance. It was nice to see you confirm things Ive gone eggs (boiled and omelette) and fish/seafood diet mostly, with 1 day per week for beef, and maybe chicken once every 2 weeks. . Ive also started eating A LOT OF vegetable soups. look up green mango soup its a very neat thing that is just crazy amount of vitamins (soup has mango and pineapple and tomatoes!) Some suggestions- Try buckwheat. Speficially russian style toasted buckwheat. Simply add 1 cup to 2 cups cold water on the stove and simmer until water goes away (10 mins or so) - find a recipe. Here is why I think you should try it - 1. It is much better than oats in terms of protein amounts and vitamins. 2. you can easily add milk to it and honey to make it into a sweet dish, OR you can easily use buckwheat as a side dish to meat or fish or whatever by adding some salt to it. Ive eaten oatmeal for breakfast many times and it just gets boring quick. Ive added it to protein shakes but then side effect is it starts turning in your stomach making you feel bloaty. 2. supplement with zinc. Zinc and lysine are amazing, former for immune health and testosterones, latter for the skin repair and not getting cold sores from too much sun/stress on the immune system. 3. check with people you know, but ive heard MENS body can not process iron - so men shouldnt take it period because it has to come out via blood (menstruation for women). I am curious if what you said about vit c changed this since. 4. eggs - boil a whole pack of eggs. now you have easy meal anytime you want to eat something AND you dont eat a bowl of something unhealthy. Having boiled eggs around is very convenient. Especially before bed.

Tips for iron and oats. Oats are naturally rich in iron, but the iron is bound and not easy for the body to access. But if you soak the oats overnight in the fridge (in orange, apple juice or water ect....) enzymes get activated, resulting in easier access to the nutrients of the oats, giving you more of the iron that's in there.

Through the years I just realized I truly hate it if I don't eat before diving, I feel so HANGRY while going to the surface! :) I don't really like oats but 2 things I love for breakfast in general are either eggs (my body loves them) or buckwheat with honey and cheese. ACtually animal fat is the best source of energy, as it is not instantly burned, and the energy is released over time, comparing to carbs that are basically the fruit and burn like Christmas Tree (fast). So bacon is good, some side carbs as well, but animal fat as a junk food (with tons of salt and processed sugar) is a big no no.

Perfect. Oats made with milk made me feel heavy and bloated. I have tried it exactly once. It could be the milk or me eating it too early before diving. So I am avoiding it now. In a big swell I got sick. Thumbs up for chocolate. One with hazelnuts is the best. My plan is to take some fruit or/and chocolate when spearing but need to come up with a good way of keeping it dry. A boat would help. I think I need a new job.

Exactly, that is why it is b-shit the video. Milk is one of the worst things you can eat. You lose ability to digest cow's milk as you stop being a baby. Milk just rots in your intestines, making you bloated, heavy and feeling bad, also giving cramps. You cannot digest lactose, and in the form of milk it's really bad for you. Unless someone never stopped drinking milk throughout the life (and still has lactase produced in body). So yeah, take advice from amateurs and hippies ;). Milk is bad to us and has low nutritional value.

So spot on that you say that your body is trained to effectively use the fuel from foods it has grown accustomed to eat. A naturopath told me that years ago, pointing out the diets of the animal kingdom. And that you point out biodiversity is so spot on! You say you aren’t a nutrition expert but you have explained the purpose of what you eat and why you eat it is totally clear and again bam 💥 spot on. Oh and.... Does eat oats and goats eat oats and little lambs eat ivey, a kid’ll eat ivey too..... wouldn’t you?

Yo Adam, I am enjoying your videos. Just a piece of constructive criticism if I may, to my knowledge fat doesn't compete with oxygen binding site of haemoglobin. You are totally right that if you eat too much fat it ends up being carried around in the bloodstream though. All the best man and thanks for divulging your knowledge. Edit: I should say if you have a reference for that though I'd like to know. Cheers.

Great video. Thanks. What about using the oat as "milk" in order to add other grains or cereal?. For example... I process 1/2 glass of oat with 1 glass of water (and honey) making a... milk (if the name suit) Then, i put that milk in a bowl and add nuts, bran, raisins... etc. The only problem is that i feel heavy after breakfast, and i have to take it at least 2 hours before dive. You say that the spearfishers expend a lot of time in the water. Im not a fisher, but i dive a lot with fishers... so i expend a lot of time too in water (3 hours is common)... what can i carry on my orange buoy - in addition to fresh water - in order to replenish or refuel my body without cramps? Sorry for my tarzan-mode english. Greets from argentina.

Adam, just wondering what your take is on ketosis in freediving, and supplementing with exogenous ketones? I've heard good things and felt a difference in my dives, but it seems like, in essence, you try to carb-load before a dive. Which is antagonistic to a ketogenic diet.... Just curious. Thanks for the content you put out! Keep killin it!
@AdamFreediver7 жыл бұрын
super interesting that you bring that up! I'm actually looking into that myself. In general the keto diet isn't thought to be good for freediving and any freediver that has tried it at a competitive level has only had bad results but I'm extremely interested in maintaining my normal diet but simply having exogenous ketones before my dives and seeing the result
@sethcornell12736 жыл бұрын
Ben Greenfield (iron man triathlete) said he did this before a race one time, he was hyper-ketotic and hyper-glycemic, he said he felt like he was on jet fuel physically, and got the mental clarity benefits of the ketotic state. I'd be really interested to hear the experience of someone who dives as deep as you do.

Whoah, I'm a pharmacist and the idea of using beta blockers is an intriguing one. You'd think that the risk isn't worth the benefit! Depending on which one you take, you run the risk of interfering with the mammalian dive reflex. So... Maybe you can help with this problem. I get hiccups any time I go down to about 10meters. I'm prone to hiccups in the best of times, and they are quite violent, causing my body to force air into my stomach, which causes me to...uh... Get sick when diving. Eating before a dive is a no go because of this. Any tips on preventing hiccups when free diving? I'm not finding anything about it online.
@mat861002 ай бұрын
Sorry to hear that bud! I hope in the past year you've found a solution. In case you haven't, here's what I know. Hiccups and contractions can happen on the way down or at a certain depth. It's usually simply a sign of discomfort. For a long time I got contractions at 25m and I still get them when I dive in very dark water. If you can hold your breath without getting hiccups, you should be able to dive without getting hiccups. There is no physiological reason pressure should give you hiccups, and I think it's the same for should breath holds. In fact holding my breath until I get contractions is the most sure-fire way I have to get rid of hiccups. My advice is to dive to 7 or 8m and hang (with a buddy watching you closely) until you're acclimatised. Try inching your way deeper and see if hiccups still happen. I'll bet if you're having the most awesome dive and you don't notice depth, they won't. The other thing is, if you're diving until you get the kind of hiccups that make you throw up, maybe you're pushing through too much discomfort? Diving should be fun! Try to focus on easy, no-contraction, no hiccup training and diving. You should still be able to get 1min30 underwater, which is all you really need.

@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын
yes Oatmeal :) haha I have been offered gigs to be a merman but I didn't take them up

@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын

Thanks Adam for all your tips! One question, what do you think about coffee before training dynamic? And is there any difference when training static? Cheers from Chile!

I see in the comments here mentions about chocolate. I might have missed the part of the video that mentions it as a good food for free divers. So my question is about what kind of chocolate we are talking here? Just a regular any brand kind of chocolate bar made with milk? If this is it i can’t have it since milk, even from a chocolate bar, upsets my guts.
@AdamFreediver7 жыл бұрын
it's mostly a joke because I eat so much chocolate. Chocolate isn't really good for freediving although cacao is :)

Thank you, Adam! New around here and did not know you are a chocoholic... :)

I want you to try this lunch it is very useful too before diving for a glass of warm water with a pure honey bee spoon Drinking in the morning before exercise will give you great energy. Try it and you will not lose anything and then answer me.

Well turns out that no freediver fasts to get a lower metabolism so that means 3 Big Macs before a session :) Also are nuts alright to eat or do they have too much fat in them because I found them useful for snacking on but I know that fats get broken down into fatty acids and freedivers like their alkaline stuff :/
@AdamFreediver7 жыл бұрын
Ah don't worry too much about alkaline foods. your body readjusts your PH levels within minutes I love nuts for snacks

Did you eat oat with milk or with water
@user-gg4zt8kd4w7 жыл бұрын
jsfreediver Milk is one of the worst things to have be for diving, so water would probably be better.
@AdamFreediver7 жыл бұрын
I eat it with water personally :) or sometimes rice milk

Would it be safe if i go on a raft with a freind to the open and i try to freedive to the bottom like 50 feet while my freind is just chillin on the raft? well not really because of the current and being aware of harbor seals and killer whales. We only 15 water green like puget sound in washington state.
@jakethedog29346 жыл бұрын
No wetsuit. only fins and goggles with snorkel and knife with shorts and no weights. My freind is obviously aware of if i black out i float back up and he take off my mask and slap my cheek and blow in face.
@AdamFreediver6 жыл бұрын
Hey Jake, this would be incredibly dangerous! when we black out we usually wont float to the surface unless we're on the surface and then because we will exhale when we black out we usually sink. I'm not sure how active the freediving community is in Washington State but I definitely recommend that you link up with some other freedivers and dive with them :) or take a freediving course with your friend :)
@jakethedog29346 жыл бұрын
Adam Freediver Oh what was i saying. If you got a wetsuit then you will float back up. I don't know about freediving schools there but i am all good, just need to learn a bit more online.
