I've been running an Oase Gravity drum, moving bed and pump chamber with Bitron gravity UV for nearly 8 years. I have never had to clean my screens with anything other than a normal garden hose nozzle with flat spray which I use to rinse the inside of the elements, about every six to eight weeks. I have never used Acid, pump clean solution, dishwashers, pressure washers or anything like that. I recently gave them a gentle scrub with a soft brush dipped in some virkon solution just because I was cleaning something else! It removed the tiny (a few mm) strip of brown biofilm you get in the outer two rows of the screens where they are slightly in the 'shade' and don't get the full force of the cleaning jets. I think I've cleaned the nozzles once in the time I've owned it. I have no idea why so many seem to struggle with keeping the screens clean other than perhaps it is due to the cleaning time per cycle. On mine, and every Oase I've installed, I set the cleaning time to 22 seconds so it does two complete rotations (eight panels) and then one extra, so that it always comes to rest one panel further than previously. water where I am Is high pH and GH and KH too so limescale is a problem in the house! Another thing I disagree with here is the acccess to the wastes chute.. It is much better in the Oase, its the only one where you can access the whole chute for cleaning being the only drum with instant access and removable screen elements. You can fully clean the chute with a hose and brush or remove it in seconds with one band clamp.. There are also oase adapter plates available for converting the outlets from 6" to 4" so you don't need to use multiple rubber adapters. No idea what you mean about the connectors between the modules... Literally couldn't be easier. Havent touched mine since install. I notice you haven't plumbed the red waste valves... Absolute doddle with 70mm push-fit or 110 using the grey adapters included. The tanks and lid are made of fibre reinforced resin not Fibreglass. Think riot shields. By far the most resilient non steel models available. Edit- just noticed your cleaning pumps are only 3 bar... The Oase pump is 6 bar so may also explain better screen cleaning with the Oase. The pump is also virtually silent with the Oase as it is self contained and submerged.

I’ve been running an oase drum in front of 2 750ltr tanks with 250ltr of k1 in one and 200ltr of helix in the other for 3 years and I love the setup as I can literally leave it to do its own thing and I barley need to go near the filter house these days. I bought a second set of filter meshes so when the mesh starts to get blocked a bit with biofilm I can just change out the 8 individual meshes in around 2 mins and can then clean the dirty ones at my leisure without having to shut the filters down for more than a few minutes. The drum was the best thing I did to the pond! It has reduced my ammonia, nitrite and nitrate massively as most of the fish waste is removed as whole particles before it has time to break down and create any real problems. I have doubled the size of our pond from around 4000g to 9200g or around 42,000ltrs but halved my electric bills by going from pump fed nexus’s to gravity fed drum etc and going for a flow friend pump, another fantastic buy! We have 64 Koi and feed fairly heavy in the summer with an auto feeder and the drum and moving bed filters work a treat! Crystal clear water and great levels all year round and the only real maintenance is an annual filter mesh change and clean. The one thing they don’t really mention about drums is the fact that they do deplete the pond water level which does mean some sort of auto top up or a constant flow into your pond, especially on the oase because if the water level gets too low which is only an inch or two then the drum thinks it’s dirty and will backwash constantly which in turn uses more and more water from the pond which makes the drum think it’s getting dirtier and so a vicious circle is formed. Oase do recommend the purchase of their auto top up system the profiguard which does work quite well but I have gone for a constant trickle as this keeps the pond at the exact same height at all times and does a constant water change as well. My trickle is about 200lrt a day which is far more than the drum uses but it works well on the pond. We now have more time to enjoy the fish and almost zero maintenance..

Hello Adam I've just purchased a drumfilter from befil a company in holland they work totally different to traditional drums plus you have a options where the drum rotates slightly when the water rises so that the filter medium is 100% in use before is sprays it clean plus it as two options where it does a toilet flush automatically of you can do it manually also there a round filter not square so no corners for dirty to hang around

Redoing my pond now . I will finish it after winter is over here in Pittsburgh. Would love to have a drum filter but maybe a little pricey right now. Got a Cetus sieve an easypod and a Sequence pump for a great price so I will start with that for now . 👍🏻👍🏻

Hi Adam, I have the same Oase drum and 2 modules of moving bed (3 yrs) - Love the system & the water quality. I have an air line with bubble bar sitting in the bottom of the dirty side which keeps it a lot cleaner - not perfect but considerably better than it was. The only thing i wished mine had was an internal UV, but apparently that plastic isn't stable for one????? Maybe Oase just want you to buy the module, but i don't have room for that! Great vid - Happy ponding!

Hi Adam excellent video, very good to get unbiased opinion on drum filters as an Aussie we don't seam to have the choices that you have in the UK. Oase is more readily available then profidrum. I know what they say about opinions, but do you believe one is more efficient then the other? Love the videos keep them coming Cheers from down under. PS We are winning in the ashes!!!

@Adam Julyan, you can put air in that small compartment, but you have to custom make it. Take a measurement of the depth. Then mark that on a soft pipe that can handle the air pressure. Then mark the width of the filter followed by the depth again. After that, use Aquarium stones and plug them into the hose(width section) with epoxy for better air tight seal. Then thread the end of the pipe under that middle pipe and press it down to the bottom like a U. Followed by plugging up the hose end while the other end goes to your air pump. This way, you can easily pull it out if need be. Also, by bending it like a U, you don't need to fasten it at the bottom. Because the bend itself will push it down. Preventing it from floating. Of course, tying a stone/pebble at the centre assists. Just a small DIY trick for that.

Hi Adam, thanks for all these amazing videos - I’m new to koi (previously a reef tank keeper) and found your channel really helpful. I’m currently debating between a Profi or QK. Have you used or seen a QK? Which would you say is better and why? Cheers Chris
@AdamJulyan4 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I would highly recommend a drum filter they are great i like my profi drums but then i have 3 of them so i would. i have not seen the QK one in person but i have seen it online a few times and i imagine its a good drum because QK has a good reputation so im sure whichever one you go for you would be happy with :) Adam

Hey Adam. I have a question. In one of your videos I saw you have siporax in a drum chamber. I want to do this as well. I want to run 25.000 liter an hour over siporax 25mm. Do you recon this flow will work? The flow is from up to down. Thanks in advance!

@AdamJulyan7 жыл бұрын
Yes i do sell koi I am in Bramley, Rotherham, South Yorkshire. I don't usually sell koi this time of year as my ponds are all heated and the fish can only go to someone with the same temp pond 18DegC. If you want to come and have a look let me know. Adam

Hi Adam hope you can answer a question for me I have a koi that is lay on its side on the bottom of the pond it’s been like this for 4 weeks now but every time I try to net it it just swims away then 5 min later it’s back on its side again. It has some slight swelling to its belly on the left side at the back next to its anal fin. This koi accidentally jumped out of the pond the day after I put them in in the middle of August now the pond is 5f deep 3f above ground 2f in the ground so the koi fell 3f onto the grass I checked it for damage it looked ok an swam of strongly but for the next 5 days it sat at the bottom of the pond not moving, then it was back to normal feeding and swimming with the rest of the koi until as I’ve said 4 weeks ago since the water temp went really cold Do u think it mite have a damaged swim bladder I have netted it each week to check it for any signs of stress infection ulcers or sores an there’s nothing let it go an it swims off an around with the others for 5 or 10 mins then back to bottom Hope you can help kind regards tom

Completely unnecessary... Its only biofilm. A sof brush dipped on virkon S will shift it and can even be done in situ as it isn't going to damage anything in the drum. Quick rinse through and re full.
