Hey Adam, engineer to the rescue here. Technically you could put a button to swap the functions between the thumb sick and the d-pad, the only problem is that the controller itself has to run a program so that it can tell whenever you press the "swap button" and also almost forgot to mention that the controller itself has to be built with that purpose in mind, meaning that at a hardware level there has to be a by pass so that either the thumbstick or the d-pad can assume the functionality of one or the other. Both the d-pad and the analog stick are analog lol, so in theory you could make a controller with that functionality in mind.

Man... I just have to say... Oh my shit! Finally, a third party manufacturer that gets why the Xbox joystick placement is better for 3D games! Maybe other people have different hands. Maybe they're just too used to holding controllers in their fingers, rather than their whole hands, for the ergonomics-driven design to feel right for them... but for me, this company put the d-pad in the right place for the mainly 2D consoles, and the thumbstick in the right place for those that have more 3D games... might have to keep this brand in mind for future third party controllers... if they're made well, of course. It sounds like they are, especially if you get a later revision, but I wonder how they hold up, over time. I'd still be totally happy with my Afterglow wired 360 controller if only the rubber thumbstick caps weren't shithouse, or could accept the rubber covers from official controllers. Little advice with the Dreamcast, when using VGA it likes to be turned on in a certain order or it won't display quite right. The mClassic actually fixes this, but only if the mClassic is on before the Dreamcast. Normally, if you turn your TV on, then your Dreamcast, the screen won't be aligned right and part of the right side will be missing. Turn your Dreamcast on first, then the TV, issue resolved. However, if the mClassic is connected and on...then you can turn the Dreamcast or TV on in whatever order you want. But the mClassic must be on before the Dreamcast in that situation. Maybe that will help.

Those Dreamcast issues sound like a power problem (with the controller, I'd guess). Jump packs draw a lot of current, and I've had similar strange issues related to a modded steering wheel (I did a rumble pack mod) where if the rumble pack gets disconnected mid-game, stuff like that happens. I don't have DCHDMI or other mods, but I'd imagine they wouldn't be very happy with a power supply blip caused by something like that. Also, small thing, but games that support the fishing rod do use analog thumbstick 2, as that's what the accelerometer uses. So a dual-analog controller that identifies itself as a fishing rod controller would work with the fishing games, Soul Calibur, and Virtua Tennis (first one only, not the sequel). Maybe also Crazy Taxi, but I don't remember off the top of my head if shaking the fishing rod did anything in that game... Actually, a dual-analog controller for Soul Calibur would probably work really well, as the thumbstick 2 mapping in it is kinda like the C-stick on a Gamecube controller in Super Smash, while for Virtua Tennis it just swings the racket.

Adam, I've used a few different Dreamcast controllers over the years, and I wonder if your issues with VMU, controller, rumble et al is down to one thing, namely connection. I had two controllers (one official, one not) that would often either just not work all of a sudden or buttons wouldn't work, or some weirdness like that, then turning the console off seemed to fix it. I also had it where the VMU would occasionally beep during gameplay or blink. Took a while to figure out that it boiled down to inconsistencies between the plug on the controller and the controller port. One controller (the official one) had a bit too much wiggle, so it couldn't maintain connection if it moved about. The other was down to it being a third party one and the metal connections not quite being as well manufactured, so the tension on the connections wasn't enough, enabling the wiggle to happen when moving. So I wonder if this one issue is the root of your problems, as it can also make rumble packs appear to not work sometimes, as a por connection won't draw enough power to activate it.
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
I actually considered that, but I actually had the controller board resoldered about six months ago.
@crunchyfrog5554 жыл бұрын
It wasn't board end for me. It was the plugs on the controllers being the issue. And it was a bit of a sod to track down, as the Dremcast controllers have those odd plugs a bit like Gamecube, they didn't seem as loose as conventional pin and socket types. It was those metal "strips" on the plug that didn't offer enough tension and possibly even a bit of looseness in the plastics design that did it for me. As there wasn't much play in them , it wasn't until I started disassembling and testing before I came across it. There was just enough play in between those "strips" of metal on the controller plugs and where they seat to make a dodgy connection if any slight movement happened. I hope this might offer some guidance to you. It's at least worth bearing in mind, so glad to help.

I've come to find out that GDEMU has problems on the Dreamcast. I'm skeptical about getting GDEMU work done on a console.

Its nice you still have the NES version i really loved that controller but sadly it gaveout on me 2 years after owning it... Too bad they dont make em anymore... But i love this controller for the DC... I have a red one go in style playing Resident evil Code veronica... I just wish they made a wireless one...

I just recently got this new dreamcast controller. I got it because it has such good reviews. It seems almost everyone likes it. I love the controller but... I must had got a faulty one or something because the anolog stick makes the camera go crazy in sonic adventure 1 and 2. Unfortunately I am sticking with the original DC controller. If anyone has issues with it. I like to know
@ComputerAndTechnologyChannelTM4 жыл бұрын
It would be good if they gave it another analog stick. The Dreamcast's "Maple" bus lets for two analog sticks. Then, any upcoming game could be written to work with it.

I honestly like the original Dreamcast controller. My only problems is the cord at the bottom, and how deep the hand grips go. I think it's unfairly maligned.

has your dreamcast's controller board fuse been replaced with a resetable one? because if not it sounds like that maybe something you need to look into if you're starting to get controller issues
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
It was replaced about six months ago.

@@AdamKoralik good to know. it's strange you were having issues then, oh well that's the dreamcast for you lol also i preordered this controller the minute it went live so i can't wait for mine to show up.

Adam , did you try before Mclassic + Mcable on the Dreamcast i mean this make any change both together? what would you recommend to someone that can buy both of them
@AdamKoralik4 жыл бұрын
Not personally. They claim it can be beneficial in some cases, but I doubt the Dreamcast would really need that.

The Sega Dreamcast controller is my favorite controller of all time, so this is not necessary for me.
@billy-waynejeffcoat48284 жыл бұрын
It's a fine controller imo except that thumbstick is god awful imo. Other than the reliability problems with the n64 thumbstick I found that more comfortable. Also how did they go from the Sega Saturn thumbstick to downgrading to the dreamcast thumbstick.....

I love the sega dreamcast ,but I always found it weird that the regular Dreamcast controller have less bouttons than the Sega Saturn controller. 8 bouttons to 6 bouttons.

Hey Adam, did you happen to have a list of all 4 player games for the Dreamcast? I'm looking to maybe get 2 more controllers but I don't want to spend the extra money if none of the 4 player games are worth it

Not off hand, but Power Stone 2 and Gauntlet Legends come to mind.

I think they should have left just the two rear triggers and added two more face buttons and mapped them to L and R. Games like Capcom VS SNK would benefit :)
