"Dreamcast was the last true gaming console" - Fully agree with that. Where else could you get original gaming content, plus arcade-perfect ports?! In my opinion that's what made the Dreamcast one of the best systems ever made. You had fantastic console games, and phenomenal arcade ports. Super sad that this was the end of SEGA as we know it :(

Project COE I’m gonna say GameCube also. Because it was the last game system that Nintendo really focused on games before they focused on casuals. I love all the Mii games on the Wii and Wii U, but I feel that was the thing with Nintendo’s focus on casuals. Thankfully now with the switch, it appeals to both casuals and gamers alike.

I was born in 1999 and my first console was the PS2, which I really like. I started knowing about the DC around 2010 when I tried SA1 on an emulator. Then in 2017 I discover Ikaruga on PC, which would become my favorite game ever, and learned that it was originaly on NAOMI and Dreamcast. 2018, had to do 2 month of learning in a company to advance in my studies, and they gave some cash at the end. That's when I decided to pick up a Japanese Dreamcast with 5 games: Ikaruga, Crazy Taxi, SA1, Samba de amigo and chu chu rocket. My mind was blown away, in a year I accumulate 22 games and it became my favorite console ever.

Adam the DC was the last good system for fighting games. Me being a fighting game fanatic since the Genesis days, I couldn't help but wonder that we were in a serious drought for fighters in the mid 2000's. One thing that's unfathomable to me is that, the ps2 is supposed to be more powerful than the DC, but when you look at a game like doa2, it looked so much better on the DC. It's incomprehensible how the DC had beautiful graphics and still went down under.

I've owned my Dreamcast since 2001, and it's my very first console (grew up with just PC games beforehand). Love it so much I've got 3 of them in total. I'm still collecting the odd game for it as they still can go for cheap, and I'm going for the PC ports (bought Urban Chaos recently, and I'm going for Slave Zero next). It's just beautiful console and I do think it can be regarded as the pass-over from old to the new generation of gaming, inspiring all the consoles we currently have. It might've been overshadowed by the impending release of the PS2 but in my humble opinion, Dreamcast had the BEST launch of any game console. I've been through a lot of launches and I've never felt the same way the Sega Dreamcast made me feel. Just the hysteria, publicity, and hype surrounding the Dreamcast that summer before it's release was crazy. I will never forget it. I got a little magazine for reserving the console before launch from Babbages and let me tell you, I probably read that thing like a million times that summer before it's release in September. It was ALL I thought about that summer. haha, oh man. Good video man!

AdamKoralik well, as long as we're reminiscing, haha, may I add that it was a warm late summer air. I went to pick it up later that day after my mom got home from work and I remember the warm, orange haze from the sun about to set in the sky. There was still light out but it had that really cool looking, orange sky you see sometimes in the summer. yeah, kindda cheesy, but everything was perfect that day. Weather was nice and warm and everything just felt perfect. Not to diss on the ps2 but when I picked that up in November of 2000, it was the complete opposite of the Dreamcast launch. School had already started, there was no light outside and the weather was just a dreary cold.

You're very knowledgeable and you do your research. You don't have a biased opinion on certain things such as feeling that one console is better because of its' name. Not all reviewers do that. OMG, I cannot say how much I loved this console. I think it surpassed the Saturn as my favorite SEGA console. Your right it was the last console made for gamers. When I was in college I saved the lunch money my mother gave me weekly (about twenty dollars) to import it from Japan in February 1999. I loved this console so much I actually bought a Dreamcast shirt (blue logo, black shirt) and wore it to Playstation 4 launch. I really wish SEGA would remake ChuChuRocketo for the eighth generation consoles. It would blast to play that online today.

Great video Adam. This is truly the last gamer's console. Maybe something like this could be done (probably by me) again. None of the modern games compare to the Dreamcast. I always tell my friends about it, and they usually turn it down. There's just something about retro games that will always stay. I guess their simplicity is what you could say, though Dreamcast is far from simple. The only thing that comes close to Dreamcast is indie games. Even then, it's still not as great. It's funny, many great developers came from Sega. I always tell people about Sega's past. They would say, "You like Sega?" I'm like, "Just the old Sega. Now they're pretty lame." I hope something good happens to gaming. Like I've said numerous times, my GameStar idea is the answer to the blandness of modern gaming. Keep up the good work Adam. Happy Spring Break!

Backwards compatibility in consoles wasn't a big thing until PS2 came out Considering that Saturn had like all of the CPUs of Genesis, CD, 32x, as in more powerful Motorola 68k, Hitachi SH2 chips it should have had backwards compatibility with them which could have saved it worldwide. As for adding Saturn Backwards compatibility they probably could have added that through the extension port.

This is precisely the type of video I'm looking for. I'm your age, and find myself a bit too old to be regularly watch KZbin for entertainment. Specifically, I don't care to watch what's most popular here: watching other people play video games, or see them discuss modern video games with exaggerated expressions and effects. I do love, however, an in-depth conversation on the consoles of my youth (and occasionally the present ones), which is exactly like watching your videos feel like. So well done, Adam, and many thanks, and consider me subscribed. By the way, I was in 8th grade when the console came out, which I too had preordered. I remember it vividly, waiting all day to go to the store and picking it up. I got Sonic Adventure and Ready 2 Rumble Boxing. We swung by Arby's on the way home (5 roast beefs for $5), so I fired it up while still eating. I played the boxing game first, wanting to "build up" to the Sonic experience later that night. Needless to say, I was blown away, and proudly wore my Dreamcast shirt that came with pre-ordering the console and raising my Chows on the VMU. My 64 was by far my most played console, but Dreamcast will always be my favorite for the promise of what it could've been.

I imported the Dreamcast in 1998 from Japan to Sweden. It never disappointed me. I loved all the arcade conversions for it. The last true gamers console. I personally never liked PS or PS2. At the time, the only alternative that I enjoyed besides Dreamcast was Neo Geo. That was and is an awesome console. I had Saturn at the time but sold it shortly before buying Dreamcast. 3D was all the rage but Saturn games had some shitty 3D. I had a hard time enjoying them. On another note, too bad 3DO didn't pan out. I also owned it at the time. It was a cool console and its music was top notch...but the games and gameplay lacked sorely. Ah, can still remember when me and my buddies used to pirate newly released Japan SNES titles from BBS. Those were the times.

I've been watching your highly enthusiastic Dreamcast content off and on since about 2009, and your passion is part of the reason I finally just bought my first. In 2019. Don't get me wrong, I wanted one since 1999, but felt like I could never justify it. The Dreamcast always felt like the path I never took, and I thought about it a lot over the years. What I would describe feeling now is a sense of peace. It's a little expensive to collect for at this point, but I have no regrets.

Something funny here. Bleem was made by a guy named Randy Lindon, who had some coding experience putting stuff like Dragons Lair on the Amiga. After Sony's litigation and court fees brought down Bleem, Sony hired Randy to do the PS1 emulator for the PS2. Too bad he didn't make it work like Bleem.

+thatguyontheright1 Little late here, but are you absolutely certain this is correct? Because to my understanding, the Bleem project was ongoing until 2001 (they had a release planned for Final Fantasy 9 until it came to Sony's attention), the PS2 was released in March 2000. Maybe you're thinking of the emulation that the PS3 uses for PS1 games?

***** Well there has to be some sort of misinformation at hand, the chances having a Bleem release of GT2, a lawsuit against the company, and the release of the readily backwards compatible PS2 in the space of 2-3 months are rather... astronomical... I did some digging around and to my understanding, he was hired by Sony but primarily to assist in games ported from other platforms to the PS2. Doesn't look like he was involved in the PS2's method of backwards compatibility.

Thinking about the Dreamcast makes me feel sad. Such an amazing system, but died well before its time. Back in the day I played mine all the time, my PS2 never got a look in. I was devastated when Sega pulled out of the hardware business, although I knew deep down they pretty much had no other choice. Playing games online and searching the net on a console, at that time in history, was INSANE!!! And you spoke the truth. The Dreamcast was the last die-hard games console. The last one aimed squarely at us gamers.

Just started binge watching these console recap videos, really interesting and insightful stuff. I've never owned a Sega console until today. Bought a Dreamcast with 3 controllers, 1 vmu, Crazy Taxi 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, Soul Calibur, Shenmue, RE Code Veronica, and a game I've never heard of called Slave Zero. Most of the games didn't have their original cases and the cables were missing, but he threw in some extras and I'd just gotten a bunch of Gamecube stuff for relatively cheap from him just the day before so I didn't mind. Really looking forward to play it and start collecting.

Every now and then I hear rumours about a Sega Dreamcast 2 coming out. I don't know if there's any validity to them. But if Sega ever does make a comeback with a Dreamcast 2, my suggestion would be to make it backwards compatible with the Sega CD, Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast 1 games and include a cartridge port or two so its backwards compatible with the Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive and 32X games. And of course, it should come with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in.

Jarrah White I think that’s a bad idea. The retron 5 isn’t doing great and has complications. And Nintendo’s not on top anymore. A new Sega console should try to compete directly with the ps4 and Xbox one and have third party support plus some exclusive sega titles, that would be the only way they could get any sort of profit in 2018, you have to go for the mainstream

I grew up playing video games. When I won Rayman 2 in a contest, my parents bought a PSone to play it on. And that was the first and only console we had for a while. With the sixth generation, I was actually only aware of the PS2, Xbox and GameCube. I can't remember ever seeing anything Dreamcast-related in the major videogame stores. In hindsight I DO remember seeing an article about it somewhere, but to my knowledge, it wasn't a big deal (at least not in my country). I even have to admit that your video on the Xbox taught me that the Dreamcast was even in the same generation. So while I don't know anything about the Dreamcast per se (and quite frankly, I'm happy to have owned the other consoles at one time or another) it's great to see that you're so knowledgeable about this. Really informative stuff. So thank you!

What you said about the Dreamcast being the last video game console made for "you" is very sad... and true. Nintendo is the only one left now, and even they target other demographics. But wouldn't you agree that the Gamecube was the real last true console? Much like the Dreamcast it had a very gamer-centric library. Two Mario, three Zelda, two Metroid, Eternal Darkness, The Twin Snakes, Resident Evil remake, 0 and 4, Viewtiful Joe, Melee, Pikmin, Capcom vs SNK 2, Soul Calibur 2 (with Link! :-D), P.N. 03, Rogue Squadron II and III, Two Starfox, Killer 7. Not to mention Crystal Chronicles, a game that required four GBA to work properly. It had the best add on ever, the GB Player. Wonderful perfect controller. And it got some of the Dreamcast amazing legacy with Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia and Phantasy Star. I guess the most casual thing about the Gamecube was the DK bongos. But it wasn't like the guitar on PS2 or the stupid ass wiimote, it was wacky and arcade-like, much like the Dreamcast fishing rod. You could play Jungle Beat with the bongos, an actual video game, good 2D platform, before 2D platforms were cool again. I think that much like the fourth generation, the sixth had Sega and Nintendo just being awesome.

1:08 Seriously, there are people who think that!? I've never heard that argument, but it's beyond stupid. It's a huge leap from even the most powerful 5th gen console(N64), and it's only a little less powerful then the PS2. If you were to look at a DC and PS2 game side by side, you wouldn't even notice a difference most of the time. I mean, you might notice a difference if you were looking really close, but it wouldn't be anything major. 5:13 Yeah, the PS1 was the only system at the time that had dual sticks. It wasn't important for a controller to have them back then. No one ever complained about the N64 or DC not having dual sticks. They didn't even think about it. 7:04 People who live in Europe have told me that the Master System was pretty explosively popular there. It was similar to how the NES was huge over here. I'm not sure about the rest of the Sega consoles though. 16:59 I'd really like to see you do a standalone Bleemcast video. It was a very cool idea, and it's a very interesting story to tell. It was originally intended to be a disk that would allow you to play any PS1 game on the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was way ahead of it's time with the internet and VMU features, and it also improved on Nintendo's N64 controller innovations. The N64 controller only had one slot on the back, mostly used for either the rumble or controller pak. This worked fine for many games, but it was a bit of an annoyance for games that used both accessories, since you had to switch them back and forth when saving. The Dreamcast solved that problem by simply having 2 slots on the back of the controller, and their rumble pak didn't need batteries. I think that the Dreamcast is a great system overall, but I just don't really understand how people can call it the "greatest system ever made" or "my favorite game console". That's gotta be purely nostalgia talking. Like I said, it was ahead of it's time, but it just wasn't around long enough to be considered those things. It has a fantastic library of games for a console that was around for less then 2 years, but it's library is still very limited. It just can't compete with all the other systems out there that were more successful.

I'm pretty sure the Dreamcast was a more powerful platform than the PS2 in some ways, had hardware texture compression + AA (which is huge for image quality) and could output in 480p via VGA (it was far easier to develop for as well). It was an amazing system. Sega just shit the bed so hard with previous efforts no one really trusted them.

I admit to, at first, hating the Dreamcast. I honestly thought it was a shitty kid-targeted console that only released games rated E, and was vastly inferior to every other 6th gen console. And I wasn't alone on this. Most of my friends completely dismissed the Dreamcast as shit, and waited for the Ps2. And, while the Ps2 IS my favorite 6th generation console (and easily one of, if not my favorite console of all time) I still appreciate the Dreamcast and what it tried to do. If I were to rank the 6th generation, having now played ALL of the consoles, I'd probably rank is something like; Gamecube

The PS2 could be regarded as better simply because it had a longer lifespan, so it had more titles released for it. I loved Twisted Metal Black on the PS2, and MTV Music Generator 2 (though that wasn't exactly a game). I used to use the PS2's DVD player all the time to watch movies. However, it could also be argued that the Dreamcast didn't even need a DVD player. If you had the broadband adapter, and if someone had the willpower and programming skills to do so, you could make an online movie streaming interface for the Dreamcast. The console was only out for 18 months, so that's like 6 to 8 years of development and support that the Dreamcast missed out on. So much could've been done with the broadband adapter. The Dreamcast could've been the first game system to incorporate social networking and conference voice chatting. People could've hosted live Let's Play streams over the internet or exchange game saves with each other. The serial port could've made use of added storage. There was so much potential with the Dreamcast that was missed. Even to today's standards, the Dreamcast looks like a close-to-current-gen console that traveled back in time to the year 1998.

I'm from Mexico, and the Dreamcast was quite popular over here. They even had a TV show dedicated to it, probably funded by Sega, or the importer or distributor here. Its competitors, the PS1 and the N64 were quite popular too, but the DC's superior graphics attracted a lot of older gamers. I remember seeing a video of Soul Calibur on TV, and my jaw just dropped to the floor, I couldn't believe we finally had arcade-level graphics on a console. My favorite game is Jet Set Radio. I showed it to my 10 year old nephew recently, and he liked it a lot.

I love your vids man. I comment it in almost every recap video. These recaps and dreamcast vids are like the killer apps for your channel. I like(d) SEGA a lot. I am a huge fan of them for their time with dreamcast and before. My favorite console is the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. A lot of great memories. Sure, i like SNES a lot, but my Mega Drive is #1. Of course, after my NES and Mega Drive, i got a playstation, because that is what i saw at my grandma's house, because they were the first to own them in my family, then my uncle demonstrated die hard with the gun, crash bandicoot, metal gear solid, so we wanted one too, obviously. (Yes, my grandma and grandpa had and played videogames, which i is awesome.) For a long time, i have been wanting a sega dreamcast, especially after watching this video. I am going to a convention on Sunday and the sega dreamcast is on my list now. (THANKS!) Are the (good) games rare? Of course sonic is good, but is probably very affordable for what i can see. I am not too familiar with the games. Like the Saturn games, almost all of them are costing a lot of money and some are even unaffordable. I totally agree about the "This console is for you" part. I do not like all the overkill features the consoles have today. It just makes them more and more irrelevant. It's more like a media center which happen to play games. If i want to do shit like that, i will buy a pc. I believe because they want to hit every target instead of just gamers, all those overkill features is holding back its potential on what it can do in terms of graphics, AI, games in general, etc. I have had a lot (and still have) of fun playing the playstation 1 and when i even hear the boot-up screen, nostalgia overload. Just shitloads of memories, just like the NES and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Again, thanks a lot for the videos, especially the recap series, i hope they will go on to the second generation of gaming.
