Just a heads up on the PS3 mention: There's a handful of PS3 games that do run in native 1080p! Although they're more so limited to a few sports titles and mostly some smaller, indie projects that were PSN exclusives. Digital Foundry has a great series giving a rundown of the games year by year. A couple of 1080p native examples being Ridge Racer 7 and Wipeout HD.

You might like My Life in Gaming’s recent video on these. They weren’t too impressed with them, but they acknowledged both have scenarios where they would be useful. The three levels of sharpening on the 4k Gamer Pro is basically no different than the sharpening settings on most TV’s, though it might still be useful at upscaling to 4k before it hits your TV if your TV adds lag. Both devices are basically lag free so that’s a plus for both of them. I have an mclassic but don’t use it much. I think it works best on 6th and 7th gen games

That's because the guys from My Life in gaming love original content without any time of upscaling. They respect line doubling way more because it keeps the content in its original aspect. They aren't in to filters too much. But the problem with most TVs now a days is that they don't have true sharpening. Is mostly artificial sharpening. Even tho he mentioned that manufacturers have been getting better at TVs upscaling and sharpening, it is still artificial at the end of the day. I have 3k dollar TV, and it still can't do what the Mclassic does, even if it is minimal. The average person has cheaper TVs. There is so much you can get out of TV calibration. I personally use the Mclassic for the Wii, and it does wonders on my 65-inch.

@Art Vandaley Yes, both the TV and the 4k Pro have artificial sharpening. But the difference is that every TV panel has a limit point where if you keep turning the sharpness up, it creates artifacts, it throws the calibration off, and it also creates somewhat of a halo drop-shadow on the image. If you use the 4K pro, the TV is not the one stressing itself. The dongle is that one doind the sharpening.

Great video and the most in depth review/explanation on these products. I have had an MClassic for years and recently got the Photo fast 4k for my Switch. Based in all my texts, I have made the same observations and came to the dame conclusions you did. Both work great together (though set up is as you say, but I'm using a genuine dock and the USB from my TV) and together the make up for what the other lacks. Great video once again!

All TVs have built in upscalers. Honestly, it boils down to the quality of the internal scaler.

It is not. Adam is wrong here. The game will still render in 900p or something and outputs it in 720p. It will not render the games in 720p because you set the output to 720p. Therefore no performance improvements and still better quality with 1080p output.

DF Retro did 4 videos on the small amount of PS3 games that ran at 1080p native. There are some, but not a lot and a lot of them are hit on the FPS level.

Hey Adam, PS3 has a handful of native 1080p games. Ridge Racer 7 is probably the most well-known one as it was advertised as a full HD launch title for the platform. From what I noticed even if you set the PS3 to 1080p, it will still run the native resolution of the title without upscaling it (which is great for the mClassic). The Xbox 360 also has a few native 1080p games, however, the 4KGP doesn't play well with it.

It even had at least 1 game (Okami HD) that actually rendered ABOVE 1080p internally (a little under 4K) and then downsampled to 1080p since it's the highest resolution it can output.

I agree totally with your review. For me it makes a lot of stuff look nicer but you gotta be realistic it's not gonna make something look like it's running on new hardware. My main reason for picking this up and using it with mclassic is I got a new TV that doesn't recognize 1440p so using 4kgp gets me to 4k

I’ve had a mClassic for a couple of years and I have been happy with how it works on the PS3 and 360 in particular, plus I felt it helped the Switch out as well (although I always had my Switch in 1080p). I received my 4K Gamer Pro last week and I played with it and I don’t feel like it offered as big of an improvement as the mClassic overall and feel that it’s over priced for what you get. Still it does output at 2160p on my TV which is what it said it would do. I guess I expected more after being so impressed with what the mClassic did. I kinda wish we had gotten a 4K mClassic instead. All that said using a PS1 and Saturn through the RetroTink 5x and then the mClassic daisy chained to the 4K Gamer Pro was kinda hilarious I thought. The 2D games on those systems looked super crisp. The 3D were still jagged to hell but I’ve grown to appreciate that look when playing those systems so it doesn’t bother me.

I still rock the mclassic. People think it's snake oil. Turning on wide-screen and making those ogxbox games 16:9 looks fantastic. Sure there's better solutions if you spend more money but I got it for Xmas last year. Use it almost everyday

I've used this thing once or twice on the back of my gamecube. It went carby>mclassic>4k gamer pro. For the money, I was underwhelmed by the result. I knew already that it had to accept a 1080p signal, and ONLY 1080p. Thats the reason why I used the mclassic. For gamecube, it took all of the messy bits, and enhanced them. Backgrounds, and things in the foreground like Link's tunic had noticible black dots on them. Tried the n64 too. Nothing can help the poor n64. It was meant to run through a CRT to hide all of those imperfections. One place where I found it did a great job was off of the Retrotink 5x. It made the sharpest pixels I have ever seen. Mario seemed to almost pop off the screen. RGB Bob did a great preview of this doodad with retro games that I thought was informative. I keep the mclassic on the back of the retrotink to help my 6th gen systems, and leave it off for 8 and 16 bit. I leave the 4k gamer pro on the back of the Switch. I won't be daisy chaining them together because it is pretty impractical, and cables are going everywhere. Bottom line is......its just OK. I am sure the eventual Retrotink 4k will do a better job. For now, we have this thing. I bought it on Kickstarer because I was more curious than anything. To sum up, Mclassic should accept 480p, and 720p and it adds smoothing to jagged edges. Hens why it shouldn't be used for 8 and 16 bit. 4k gamer will only accept 1080p and sharpens, which is the opposite of mclassic. To me, its not worth the money.

I use mine to upscale downscaled console 4k using a HDMI splitter and it makes things look a lot better I had to get the m cable since my m classic kept detecting my gaming monitors 1440p mode which then bypassed the 4k gamer pro. It's good and has convinced me to not get a ps5 yet, I can keep playing my ps4 pro a little longer with nice visuals

I'm glad I bought this device, but man does it play a very particular role for me. I have a 4K computer monitor that is trash at upscaling 1080p content. (I'm upscaling to 1080p with the Retrotink 5x using consoles such as the N64 and SNES.) Since my monitor is so bad at upscaling, I'm stuck doing a 1:1 aspect ratio on the incoming signal, meaning the actual display of the consoles take up like 1/4 of my monitor's total real estate. It is borderline unplayable on a 27" screen, especially the N64. But now with this device, I no longer have to rely on the monitor to do any upscaling itself and the 1:1 aspect ratio setting takes up the entire screen. Niche as hell, but it does the job it was set out to do and the N64 finally looks good!

MLiG found that simply adjusting the sharpness on their TV without using this device had better results. Honestly, I don't see a space for this device. Not for $200 or it's discounted $160. It's just too much for too little.

Thanks your video makes me understand it better. Watch another video and it was pretty negative for mclassic and this thing. But think I will just ride with my mclassic and one day get this 4k gaming pro and use them together. It would be hard to use this in my set up bc my switcher has a hard time making mclassic fit so being more balky would be a issue. Like your video much better and thanks bc I only use mclassic in my retro setup and I love it. Great video love your channel and all the videos have been amazing. I love this stuff and getting the best picture and appreciate your passion for getting the best picture and what is the best upscalling method to use.

If your switch has an issue with the mClassic, I suggest using that extension cable the mClassic came with.

Adam you told me in a previous video on the mClassic that it only upscales gaming signal to 1440P ( if connected to a 1440P monitor ). My signal was constantly cutting out. How does this thing decide what is a regular video signal and what is a gaming signal ?

I've got the carby and mclassic for my GameCube at the moment. I need a line doubler to make it work on my TV however, as my model doesn't support 1440p, only 1080 and 4k. I'm awaiting the retro tink 4K, so I can use my GameCube through that as well as my other systems currently in use through my 5X. Or just some good third party GameCube component cables from like HD retro vision. Unfortunately with the carby, it has a really bad delay of 2 seconds or so when it switches the resolution in game, it makes Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube nearly unplayable. Luckily I worked around it by forcing the resolution to 480p with Swiss but it's a clunky method.

The mclassic is a great device for Switch, WiiU, PS3, 360 etc. Since you are dealing with 1080p max resolution it can help on those older consoles. No reason to use with PS4 or Xbox 1 and newer etc. The good thing of the mclassic is that you can select passthrough easily

I find that the mClassic is a good workaround for solving the compatibility issues with the OSSC. Wobbling Pixels even did a video showing how you can get anything >2X working with the mClassic. But of course, it doesn't support 480i or 576i. Personally, I can't stand the way bob-deinteracing looks so for such content I just let a cheap scaler handle that. I think for interlaced content there's little incentive or justification to buy a Framemeister over a cheap scaler which is expecting the resolution of DVD recorders or VCRs anyway. Still, what I'd really like to see is something like an mClassic Pro that properly deinterlaces and upscales 480i, 576i and 1080i rather than just passes them through.

Question: As part of my streaming set up, I have an MClassic hooked into a HDCp splitter so it can be detected by my elgato. But the HDCP splitter forces all outputs to 1080p. Could this, in theory, be plugged into the HDCP splitter to allow the 720p switch signal to 1080p to then be 4k? Or maybe even keep the Xbox in 4k and allow blu Ray?

Uh, possibly? The switch only supporting 1080p is the problem from what it sounds like. Adding this after would mean upscaling after that point. So it wouldn't be native 4K.

@@AdamKoralik well not exactly. In theory it would be the same as the Mclassic to this thing. My current set up is extremely convoluted(requires 5 HDMIs, 2 splitters, an Mclassic, and a 3.5 audio Jack etc) but the main gist is Switch in 720p to Mclassic to 4k splitter to 1080p HDCP stripper to elgato. If I can maybe at this to the HDCp stripper, which outputs in 1080p, it would potentially allow for the native 4k without HDCP. HDCP is the biggest problem for PSTV(the vita) and the PS3. The PSTV and the PS3 have HDCP that make them extremely difficult to stream or capture gameplay through HDMI

Adam, I have confirmed that, yes. If you plug a 1080p source into a HDMI splitter that removes HDCP, and then plug this thing into said splitter, it will output in 4K. I was able to get PSTV(vita) in 4k with this. Making this + Mclassic +HDCP splitter the perfect option

Worth noting, I have an mCable Gamer, the one before they came out with before the mClassic, and it allows me to watch BluRays from my PS4 Pro & my BluRay player without fucking with HDCP stuff. Idk if it affects BluRays from my PS4 just because I don't watch movies using it anymore...

Actually with the mClassic it only outputs 1080p so you can use it on a TV like that. I like it for certain games with no aliasing but anything with a lot of text gets smudged

This product is worth every penny. Your gaining HDR. It's like a regular light bulb, but then it gets enhanced and now the light bulb is as bright as the sun. Or it's like eating McDonald's but it got enhanced and now it's chilli's hamburger quality.

4K seems to only matter if your TV is large. I was watching this video at 720p on my phone and switched it to 1440p. But in order for me to see the difference, I have to move the phone closer to my eyes, lol. But what I learned from this vid is that the Switch should be set to 720p no matter what 😁 But ya, I did notice an enhancement when using the m classic on my hdmi consoles (ps4, switch) so it's up to the player if that enhancement is worth it 👍

Elgato has an external 4K capture card. The 4K60S+, it records directly to SD card without any need for a computer. Something to invest in?

If it doesn't need a computer then it's not a capture card. But I'm glad such a thing exists.

That thing plus the mclassic enhancements (when they were all on together) looked pretty bad on princess peach especially around the eyelashes like someone went totally overboard with an unsharp mask enhancement in an image editor.

Also you make mention that “no ps3 games run at native 1080p” Not true, Deadspace series and Rayman (both games) do. Though for Deadspace I’d recommend running it at 720

It's not the dock itself, but the extra power (I mean this more in the electrical sense) does allow developers the ability to run games in higher resolutions. Latency, not really. Like 0.2ms.

Keeping in mind that it's 2022, Nintendo isn't doing a good job at making it easy for people to get the best quality out of their games. The fact that emulation gets you the best experience (in terms of level of detail, frame rate, resolution, mods and texture packs) while the console is still very much in production is very sad in my opinion. In fact the only reason I first looked into emulation was because Age of Calamity ran worse on the Switch than the original Hyrule Warriors did on the Wii U. I wish there was a version of the Switch which at least ran the games at 1080p (on TV - that's all I care about) and without slowdowns which doesn't seem too much to ask for at this point.

hmmmm, I get this, but idk, Switch emulation does this and more. Even though you're a hardware purist, you may want to get into preservation for hardware, but use a pc for actual playing. The "console" reasons for not wanting a pc is a thing of the past at this point

As a long time user of the application called "Lossless Scaling". I can honestly say this device is awesome on a PC. If you know how Lossless Scaling works. This device will give you the same quality as that $5 dollar application. The difference between Lossless Scaling and 4k Gamer Pro. Lossless Scaling/ leave your games in 720p windowed mode. 4k Gamer Pro/Leave your games in 1080p full screen mode. Results compared to each other give you the same results. I'm very happy with the device. GPUs don't matter anymore with these upscaling tricks.

Just turn the sharpness up on your TV. It has the same effect. mClassic is garbage too. Just get a real scaler.
