Adam Ondra

Adam Ondra

Күн бұрын

A bonus episode from the series of short videos from November 2018 when Adam Ondra and his team traveled to some popular climbing areas in the USA & Chile.
An uncut footage of Adam Ondra fighting through onsight of the iconic Just Do It (5.14c/8c+) in Smith Rock, Oregon.
AO: “I wanted to climb it since I first read the name and learned the story of this route. I was 8 years old then. Now, at 25, I finally got to it and I’m extremely stoked to have done it in the best style possible - onsight. And to have Alan Watts who bolted it back in 1989 there to watch me fight through was an absolute honor."

Tony Amos if that’s to me I started climbing in 1982, having moved to Yosemite Valley. I’ve spent the majority of my climbing in the Western & Southern Sierra. For what it’s worth I also have about 100 FA/FFA to my name. A very abbreviated resume, but I hope that answered your question

Please, please, please do more extended versions of your videos where we can get to see the climbing itself. The videos you and your team make are superb, but often the raw climbing experience is edited more towards a general audience. I completely understand why you guys do it, that way but these longer videos are superb for the climbing nerds amongst us.

I showed this to a friend (non climber). He remarked solely on Adams endurance and strength and while both are in abundance, those attributes aren't what stood out to me... There are many strong climbers around (Adam being up there) but his intuition is what blows me away. To be able to execute hard sequences on unfamiliar rock and commit to holds without any assurances of the quality. Mentality... People don't seem to realise how great a role it plays unless they've spent time on rock. Thanks for the great content. It's cool to hear the passion in your voice too. It gets me excited for climbing.

As if it wasn't hard enough to climb a 5.14c, in a strong wind, and do so onsite, you'll notice on his descent that all the trees are blanketed in snow. So, add to the challenges freezing cold rock to numb his fingers and reduce his shoe's ability to grip. Hats off for the climb, the uninterrupted, high quality full length recording, and the personal narrative added to it. Great combo!
@phutton88

Cold shoes make for better grip. Hot rock melts rubber and makes foot placements slippery.

Yeah, no kidding! Spent many super cold days at Smith looking to send what were personable bests for me. The combo of cold and crimpy can become pretty tortuous. Also, on the back side of Monkey face, it can get really windy, so just that much more impressive to a baffling display of climbing ability.

very impressive! - I looked up at this route back in 91ish or so on my first trip to Smith and I just could not imagine anyone being able to climb it, let alone on sight the route........I remember looking up the wall and it just seemed overhanging to be completely void of any recognizable holds.... At that time I was probably climbing at my hardest sport grade ever high eleven low 12s .........though I always considered myself to be first and foremost a trad climber and never climbed much sport except when visiting crags like Smith where every line is bolted.......Personally, I prefer climbing up in Squamish and elsewhere in Canada where trad still ruled the day back in the early to mid 90s - it still does at Squamish and the Bugaboos to this day...
