Adam for future reference on the transom bolts never ever use silicone. For this particular purpose 3M 5200 is the only choice. Silicone degrades which will allow water to get into the transom. Will also act as seal not allowing the water to come out completely.

Start adding 1/8” wooden paint stir sticks between transom and outboard bracket and test drive every time you add a stick. Keep adding sticks (raising motor) until the prop starts to cavitate then remove last stir stick. Cut a piece of oak that equals total number of stir sticks and that’s where your outboard height is best for any particular hull.

So the boat transom is 15" and your 8hp merc is 18"? You built the jack plate to match up the keel with the cavitation plate? how does it run now? Thinking of doing this. I have a 1978 7.5 merc 18" shaft.

For just two or three inch rise I don't know why you didn't just stack a board or board w aluminum plate backing on top of the existing transom. Didn't even drill holes in the boat. A U shaped saddle to tightly hook over the top. Attached long angle iron vertically down the inside with holes to screw into the existing transom wood & attach wood extension.

So help me understand what would have been the problem with the original design? It seemed to me that it would have worked just the same, while being a little more sturdy.

if it's too low in the water... there is more drag and less top speed

I was originally going to use a 2.5" setback from CMC but after receiving it, its so heavy and bulky I returned it. My main goal is to set the motor back a little so I have more clearance with the tiller handle but a little rise wouldn't hurt either. I'm going to try this method and see how it works! Thanks for video, I plan on making video when I build it I'll be sure to mention you. Anything you'd change a year later?

Like your video, but kept thinking of the motor lying on it side. Hopefully engine didn't hydo lock from the oil. Ps, marine grade plywood, expensive with no worries of rot.

It’s a four stroke so it has a certain side you can lay it on and it will be okay, has a sticker on it that tells you the side to lay it on

@AdamRyanA3 жыл бұрын
You can put a 4 stroke on it’s side, there’s a sticker on the side that is suppose to stay up at all times, but a 2 stroke can’t be on its side
@kcdouglas80843 жыл бұрын
@@AdamRyanA never heard of that. The motor oil in a 4 stroke will run down in the heads and even sometimes reach the carb. I’d say if you do so use caution and don’t do it for more than a few mins
@AdamRyanA3 жыл бұрын
I’ve had it on the side all winter long and it started up just fine the other day, these newer 4 stokes don’t leak like that

should of glued it before the paint with wood glue, clean, sand, then paint it, the glue will only bond to the paint, which can tear the paint off, instead of making a solid bond

Why didn't you use a saws all , pretty simple and straight . Why didn't you use a push sticking the table saw , safety first . Dude my third comment. Wheres your picture to use as a diagram. Measure onece , cut twice. ! The old adage is measure twice cut once !
@josephwilcox60862 жыл бұрын
Don't use silicone. Use 3M 4200 if you want to get the bolts out. If you don't care if you everget it apart again use 5200 but, you will not get it apart with out alot of work and damage. In Alaska fishing boats are sea)Ed around d even exhaust pipes while I. The water, 4200
