Dude is far out and I mean that in the best way possible. He's a philosopher, a thinker, a Renaissance man, and he's also one heck of an actor. I think his casting in DS9 along with a bunch of theater actors gave the series a huge edge.

The brilliant thing about "In the Pale Moonlight" is how Sisko gets deeper and deeper in, step-by-step compromising his principles, and then at the very end the plan fails and Garak makes it work by assassinating the Roman representative, being much wiser in the ways of the deadly game of interplanetary politics. Garak knew in fact that the plan would fail - so Sisko's fall from grace is his own private hell. Such a great script.

Nailed it on the race question. If you write a character to be a certain race, it's going to be a poor character. You don't want people to know who a character is because of their race, but because of their dialogue and actions. He's a terrific actor that nailed the part, and being black had nothing to do with it. You actually are able to connect to Sisko because of how complex he is.

My favorite Captain and the only one who could make me cry. The emotion that Mr Brooks put into Sisko from low growling anger to a full on shout or full on throw your head back laughing to weeping, I loved it when the voice cracked with emotion. He was the greatest and let's face it the only one to punch Q in the face.

@@frederickvillarete1755 i love how in they really took the time to show his character through and through in that scene His hitting Q told the audience that Sisko is somewhat aggressive and not afraid to be forceful and simultaneously it showed how he was easily provoked and reacted emotionally to situations Best Star Trek captain hands down. The only star trek captain I would actually want to serve under. (I think in real life NO ONE would ever trust piccard after the borg issue, while in theory i would love to serve under him in practice I would be too pissed about his temporary assimilation to allow him to remain in command of anything)

Avery Brooks speaks in the same way a Jazz musician plays. It's so lovely to listen to even if it doesn't always make sense with the pauses and seemingly random quips and noises, but there are moments of revelation, of wisdom, or the mystical that make 30 minutes feel like 30 seconds.

The comment he made about the staff wanting to make "In the Pale Moonlight" comfortable/palatable. It was never either for me, and that is why I think it worked so well. I totally understood all the logic to getting the Romulans into the war. But there is a part of me that just rebels at it. It's why it is a great episode. Some episodes can go to far, or not close enough to the edge, but thanks to the writing and the talents of Avery Brooks and Andrew J. Robinson, we have gold.

Sisko was different from the other captains, and I think the major difference is obvious. He was commander of a space station. Basically a fortified city in space. This presents quite a few challenges that contrast to those of a ship captain. Think of all the logistical nightmares a city has to deal with -- housing, plumbing, power, importing/exporting, social strife, industry, crime, disease, etc. He had a larger population to deal with, not all of them Starfleet personnel. Many people were just passing through, so the numbers and demographics were always changing. DS9 was a staging point for military, scientific, and business enterprises. The station was a frontier outpost, so still dealing with unknown challenges, but his post was stationary -- can't run away, can't take evasive maneuvers. Any threat had to be met as far from the station as possible, and if that wasn't possible, he had to defend a static position from all three dimensions (and sometimes four!). Anyone who takes over that post had better be a military and diplomatic genius as well as a logistical wizard, or know how to delegate like crazy. And somehow he found time to raise a son _by himself!_

By far my favourite captain. He was the general (almost like a Human version of Kahless) who had so much responsibility, destiny and pressure on his shoulders that you could see him coming apart at the seams on so many occasions. Picard was a diplomat and a bit of a robot, but Sisko was soooo much more. He led his troops and fought alongside them. Riker mostly did that in Picard’s place. And where it too the last episode of TNG for Picard to join his officers in a game of poker, Sisko had been cooking for his officers for years and watching baseball with them. I could go on, but Ben Sisko was a leader in a way that Picard was not and when you consider the tactical importance of Deep Space 9, the fact that he was the Emissary and the protracted enemies and tests he had to face; there’s quite simply no other captain that comes close to him. Plus, he intimidated Worf... Nuff said!
@makasete30
@makasete30 4 жыл бұрын
Hard disagree. Picard was so much more than you credit him with, and definitely not robotic. He was humane with flaws, but so inspiring with his high ideals. He showed so many times that diplomacy could win the day. That careful consideration and empathy were not boring but deep and effective. That he could delegate well and trust his team even when they thought they were going crazy, and asked him to change course or raise shields. He could fight and be Tatical, when needed. And showed that in battle or strategy he was as good as Sisco. Worf asked him to be his Cha’Dic and he fought off Two Klingon assassins. Over the seasons he developed a strong, natural bond with his crew and the culmination of that was the poker game. Picard could hang out in the hollow deck with his crew, perform that theatre in front of crew, and also cooked for his crew(Beverly for example too.). He joked with his crew, and his crew often came to him for advice(Data, Wesley, Worf, Riker) I enjoyed Sisco, he was a good leader for war, but Picard was the best all round captain for me who showed good development over the seasons.

6:29 - First of all, I loved "The Captains." I especially enjoyed Mr. Brooks' segment and Ms. Mulgrew's segment. With that, I always felt, on a minor level, it was an indirect humble-brag on Shatner's part, given he had the shortest television tenure than all the other captains (even Mr. Bakula), but his Star Trek movie CV definitely makes up for it. I think he saw the increasing popularity of the franchise and didn't want anyone to forget he was the one who started it all, which, on many levels, I can respect and understand. However...Mr. Brooks' reaction tells me everything I wanted to know.

Mr Brooks has the world's third shiniest head. The holders of the gold and silver medals in this esteemed band of brothers have to dwell in darkness, lest their bald pates dazzle the unprotected unto blindness. Also, his coherent and thoughtful (if a little 'why the hell am I here'-ish) responses to questions proves that he was ripped out of his mind during that weird interview with Shatner in "The Captains".

in my opinion, each of these captains have their positive moments Kirk is Positive, but to a degree, you understand what he's saying to spock and bones and scotty with picard, yes he's sometimes a Bit cold in some situations, But picard does have general soft spoken moments janeway ,clearly is one of those captains that is very positive to the viewer, yes she does come off to some viewers as vindictive But viewers like myself, she comes off as this perfect female captain, something that had they done that also with deanna troi (marina siritis's character), maybe it would come off far better archer is probably the second most terrific captain, cause he speaks his mind to his fellow crew members But commander sisko is probably the Most well balanced of all of these terrific captains and the reason that i am making compliments about sisko's character is cause, this man did so much for ds9 in terms of all races and to help unite viewers from my understand, sisko is a hero

I love all the captain’s from TOS to Enterprise, but Avery Brooks absolutely got the best story to act out, and he constantly nailed it out of the park. Subtle deep-seeded resentment and anger at the Federation’s ignorances, his dealing with being the Emissary and every emotional and spiritual hurdle there, his single parent trying to do right by his kid. His character truly resonated with all viewers, masterfully handled by Mr.Brooks complete magnificence at managing such a complicated role. And almost all the main cast had that level of development and material.

I like how in Beyond the Stars the Odo and Quark characters were reversed. The Actor who played Quark (I forget his name) instead of the Greedy Capitlaist played a Good LIberal Jew trying to help Black People out and resented being called A Red for his Anti-Establishment Views. And Odo the Constable beign a Corrupt Evil Bsinessman sacrificing whatever his Journalist/LIterary Morals were.

I recommend the documentary that gets mentioned, The Captains. Pretty enjoyable. Brooks' bit made me think he was a kook, but after his response in this video now I think he was just hamming it up in order to fuck with Shatner.
