This is a long one.. but, I wanted you to fully experience all that I went through. If you are like me, and have lots of investment with Canon, and want to switch to Sony.. this video is gold.
With so many KZbin videos out there “testing” the abilities of adapted Canon glass to Sony bodies using both the MC-11 adapter, and the Metabones Mark V adapter, I just had to see for myself. I was SO excited about this possibility, and finally being able to sell off my Canon 1DX and not have to also take a huge loss on all of my Canon glass was a dream I was hoping would come true. It turns out, it’s a complicated topic.. and the results are not at all what I expected. Dive into this long, yet comprehensive video to see my real world use, and thoughts based on that of a true working pro.

I had to look at the date to make sure this was right... All because I have read and watched every video on the internet about the A9 and the A7RIII-A7III. I am not fond of the fanboys like Chelsea and her hubby nor Jason either when it comes to Sony reviews. I am glad to see that you look the time and really wanted to go out and get more out of this came. a. I am in the same boat as a 1DX shooter except I shoot sports. I lug around a 400, 70-200, 24-70 around and its a bitch! I shoot for FSU football during the season and my back is DONE after the first few games. With that said I wanted to maybe venture into the world of portraiture but wanted something that was not as heavy as the 1DX. Now, you have become one of my favorite channels on youtube. You're not a condescending, narcissistic douche like Jason. You go out and have fun and get shots that are awe inspiring. It's just a really nice change. (vs. Jason who posts these hanky videos that even in 1080 look like shit). I hope that one day I can attend a shoot with you as I live in Orlando. :) I am going to go back and watch all the other non wedding videos (as I despise weddings) and saturate my self with more knowledge. Thank you for all of your hard work and for the videos you have posted up. Damon

Damon! I can't tank you enough for the kind words! Thank You so much. It's so nice to wake up in the morning and get a comment like this vs. the rubbish I generally have to delete, or try to respond too. You're a good man! LOL, I know what you mean about weddings.. sometimes I wonder how I do it! But, (for now) they keep me alive.. and I very much would love to move more and more into the education space, and truly try to help others. I think my dream is to shoot less weddings, and do more teaching AND at the same time shoot more controlled photo shoots to illustrate etc. That would be incredible. I need help tho, I need to get a handful of real supporters together, and follow a frame work like what Jason L has done (in terms of monetizing, Patron etc..) and see if in time this could be a reality. I have a lot to say, and a ton of things in my head that I want to communicate, I just need to get the platform and audience setup. It's an unreal amount of work! I truly, appreciate this comment. Thank you! Your welcome to come to any of my shoots in the future.

D T. Eye AF is trash with Canon glass. I dumped eye AF. I'm afraid that it's a feature that will only work with the tech inside Sony glass. I have an a73 with 24-70, 70-200 and 50mm. But the auto autofocus point selection works well with face detection and will get the eyes in focus. But it's also trash when trying to photograph objects from far in low light. Kept hunting at this Nightclub I shot at yesterday. The moving colored spotlights kept confusing the camera.

And if you're concerned about costs of switching it's not that bad. Sony a9 is 2k cheaper than Canon 1dx Sony lenses are only 300 bucks more than Canon counterparts. But with the price point of the bodies can compensate. And if you'll be willing to sell your Glass. But I agree with your about your conclusion about professional work. Mirrorless still had a long way to go in terms of catching up with DSLR

Im not concerned because you couldn't pull my 1DX out of my hands to go to the sony garbage. Weak weather sealing, poor battery life, buffer issues, not being able to chimp which for sports photographers is key when we are trying to get images out, no voice dictation, 2 diff types of cards, shitty support for Canon lenses in their adapters... It's small, the grip sucks, I hate articulating screens, it's cheaply built.. I mean for 4000 it better be a tank and have all that I need. I guess if I had the luxury of posing all day long that would be great but I don't.

Just got rid of $65K of Canon and Sigma EF glass, after shooting for a week with an amazing team in Costa Rica, who had brought A9II’s, a Phase One XT, a D850, a Blackmagic Ursa and two Pocket 6K’s, my 1DXII and a new SONY A7SIII. I won’t bore you with the details, but I have shot with Canon’s snd Nikon’s since my first Nikkormat FT2 in the mid-70’s and the A7SIII virtually crushed our Blackmagic and ARRI’s capabilities and creative usability in many respects (even prior to using the 16-bit Atomos Neon recorder I just preordered), and the A9II got hundreds of valuable shots on the first day of using it, most of which I would not have gotten with my 1DXII that I am very familiar with. I cancelled my R5 order, traded 95% of my Canon glass in to Adorama, and am not upgrading to the 1DXIII, as I had planned. Just the shots from this trip that I would very likely missed many of paid for all travel and lodging and any costs in switching over to the dozen or so SONY lenses and any differences in leaving my Canon bodies behind. It wasn’t easy getting rid of lenses like my 300mm f/2 and a couple f/125 and 50mm lenses, but it is about the results and the ease of getting the results, and as several long-time Canin and Nikon shooters said on the shoot, these new SONY’s are the biggest change in photography since digital. I never bothered with adapting my medium format glass to Canon EF, and would never bother with those EF to FE adapters, as I wasn’t even interested in SONY when a lot of pro’s I know and work with started talking about them a couple years ago- they just didn’t have the glass or the capabilities I needed. However, things have changed. Also, these adapters, such as Metabones, Sigma, etc are emulation transceivers, meaning that they are prone to a significant amounts of signal timing and other issues. In other words, they are very prone to creating issues, and are really not designed for anything where valuable shots and time are involved (i.e. most pro’s). The problem is not the lens, the focal length or camera- it’s the use of an adapter instead of getting native glass. BTW, you want some great compression and background obliteration on a Canon, get a 135mm f/1.8- it is really more flattering than anything this side of the 300mm f/2 (and if you want a 300mm f/2, Adorama has mine now). Rent or borrow some native glass and try it again, and you will likely be among those like myself who are jumping the Canon (and Nikon) ship in droves.

If you use the back focus button, you wouldn't have to ask her to hold it while trying to get eye af. Maybe the firmware has been updated. I just got the A9 and using canon lense via Metabone, it's picking up eye AF super quick. Make sure to update the Metabone adapter as well.

As an a9 user, I’m constantly irritated by testers claiming that adapted performance is “perfect”, “flawless” and “excellent”. It’s adapted, so by its very nature it has to be at the very least a step below perfect or flawless. And the af of any camera even with native lenses isn’t “perfect” or “flawless” to begin with. (Maybe excellent, though). As you’ve said, in a controlled setting, it will certainly work, but if you’re planning on earning a living doing this under any sort of pace or pressure, you’re going to want to use native lenses for sure.

Yes, and I believe that's exactly the point of this video! Because some people would have us think otherwise, and a Pro needs to be prepared to know the truth if he isn't moving over all his glass right away... which is probably most pros. There are real trade offs here, for some it's worth it, for other styles and work flow, it isn't. It's also not hard to understand that some Pros feel freed of the weight and feel a lot more creative, so they deal with the down side. It's all about priorities, everyone is different and there is no right or wrong. Travis... about the weight, it's worth it to try the Peak Design slide strap -- the weight is distributed better across the body and not only on one hip.

Just a suggestion for anyone else in the switch over boat. Buy the holy trinity native, then keep your other lenses adapted. If you use them enough that you even notice workflow issues, switch over to native for that lens as well. You'll most likely find lots of glass isn't really used much.

As some people pointed out, Jason Lanier did a video with Canon adapted glass on a Sony and it appeared to work really, really well. But Jason used a A7iii and Travis is using a A9. While the two may use the same focus system, it doesn't mean they will work the same with adapted glass. Also, I don't know what adapter Jason used for his video. I use native Sony glass, so I can't comment on adapted glass, but professionals use adapted glass with Sony all the time. But this is certainly a good honest test...
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 6 жыл бұрын
Clinton Wood hi Clinton! Thanks so much for the comment and in contributing to this now massive comment thread LOL. You are correct Jason used the A73 in his test video, and that did go very well. However this video was very basic and only showed the tracking abilities in a very static and controlled situation. So in every way this was very misleading and got me very excited assuming that this would work across the line of Sony cameras. Or at the very least with their Flagship A9. As you can see in my video which is Straight From the Heart nothing to gain nothing to lose and honest in the field perspective from someone who makes their living from photography this was just not going to work in any type of a professional setting as far as I'm concerned. Granted that is my opinion, but I think that is shared among most people who are Pros out in the field. I think the camera is amazing with made of glass no question. I do agree that these 7 A3 does appear to be more responsive with adaptive glass. I guess I'm going to have to get my hands on one and perhaps make another test and report back soon. There are some other KZbin accounts that I've done the same thing with the a73 and adaptive glass and it does seem to work pretty well. However the a73 while it has a similar AF system to the A9 it is not the same whatsoever. The sensor read out on the A9 is blazing fast compared to the A7 3. This will make a difference in terms of the ability and speed of the AF system. They share the same amount of AF points in the viewfinder and that's about it. So on the flip side I also have to decide if in a 7-3 will cut it in terms of the other expectations I have of a professional camera. Or... I need to wait for a Sony A9 Mark II. Or... I think perhaps the best bet is to hang tight and see what Cannon will release in an ounce in the coming months. Only because I'm so invested with their native glass at this point. The adapter that Jason used in his video by the way, was the MC 11.

Just real quick. If you have a chance to try again, put the camera in "continuous focus" rather than "single" (I apologize if you already tried it). On my A7rii, it seems to do better with face and eye tracking, even with my native lenses.

really thorough video, thanks!! I shoot weddings and events as well that require camera performance with no time for hesitation or massaging gear settings. My decision point came two years ago when I purchased the A9 and the 70-200mm GM, fully intending on returning it within 30 days in favor of keeping my 1DX system. At the end of 30 days (2 weddings, NCAA track and field championships, and 2 dance performances) I started selling my Canon gear. I had to keep a 1DX and a 400mm 2.8 II until a suitable Sony native version became available. Now I have it and Canon is all gone. There is no comparison between the A9 with native glass and the Canon with Native glass. Sony kills it. Adapted glass, I totally agree with your conclusions. You can shoot it, but not in a professional setting, you'll want to throw it in the trash 1/2 way through! Thanks again.

I'm only using Sony glass with AF on my A73 and have had no AF issues at all, however, I have had issues with my Godox X1S firing properly. I've had to fiddle with the power of either the camera or transmitter to get it to work properly, and it does miss fires often enough to be concerning.

Yeah, the misfire with third party remotes is a big concern of mine. I guess I was kidding myself thinking it was a "bad remote" that I was using LOL. If this happens to others, then this is a sign of the hot shoe connection / design on the Sony camera. There are just too many pins, and too many places were they can get misaligned or worn over time..

Travis, this was really an excellent video, and personally, I *really* appreciated your real-world practical-based perspective as a working pro. Regarding the A9, you may be interested to know that I shot with A9 for 75 minutes at the Sacramento Zoo using the Sony G Master 70-200mm f/4 and I had notable problems with the A9 locking autofocus in light shade photographing ducks and flamingos. I was shooting with the single center-spot AF point, AF-S mode and it would take fully 1/2 to 3/4 of a second to find and lock focus...on a static duck. By contrast, in the same exact subject and lighting, my Fuji X-H1 would lock autofocus almost instantaneously, less than 0.1 second.

Formatting takes longer because on a Sony it doesn’t just format but writes an image database. This apparently makes it more resistant to write failures (you can pull the card out while writing and then put it back in later and at most you’ll lose one image, not that I would ever try it on purpose during a real shoot).

You’re right about the a7iii vs a9 autofocus. Same phase detect spread (where the similarities end), different contrast detect zones, and the a9 polls its sensor (and autofocus points) 60x per second, while the a7iii without a stacked sensor polls its system only 20x per second. That’s a pretty big difference for a moving subject. (Sorry, took me a couple days to get through this long video. Haha)

Nice video. People here in the comments seem to think this is a like for like (native vs native) review. I have to say I experienced the same when switching over with adapted lenses. You specifically mention this test is an “adapted” lens vs canon with native comparison. I had high hopes adapting my canon glass after seeing videos on KZbin but these were all fairly static portrait shoots and not event. I ended up switching up all my lenses except my 135mmL. Love both myA7r3 bodies and Sony/zeiss glass now. Completely different experience.

I have been Sony shooter for some years now. Not a pro, just amateur / hobbyist. I like and really appreciate honest reviews and got my Like in this video for that. This is how you pay the bills and you gotta be absolutely confident and sure it's going to work for you 100% of the times. In my research prior to jumping to A7-III I have also seen a lot of videos, including people mounting Canon glass in the Alpha and nobody has had issues. That being said, i haven't seen them do such an in depth, several days testing as you have done. I just hope sometime in the future you have the chance to rent the A7-III / A9, together with an equivalent GM to your 70-200 Canon lens and give it a try. That way, at least, you will see if it is lens related or Sony just doesn't work for you.

Paul Kirby-Smith hey Paul thanks so much for the reply. This video is not really intended for a comparison between the two. I have no doubt in my mind that the Sony A9 with Native glass is just as if not more amazing than the Canon setup that I currently use. No question. The point of the video once again is to illustrate what it's like for someone who's heavily invested in Canon glass that wants to tip their toes into the Sony cameras and what that performance expectation might be like. Obviously I can sell all my gear and buy Sony and it will be great that we all know

This video is enlightening to me, a 1DX and 5D Mark II owner. When the A7 III came out, I seriously looked into switching because of the insane price to performance ratio, but adapted glass would be my way into the system, as well. After seeing this, I think I will stay with the gear I have. Were you content with the colors you got out of camera with the A9? Also, would you be interested in trying Sigma's lenses with the MC-11 on the Sony system to look for better possible performance?

Yeah, mounting the camera to a tripod, and showing how it works well is a poor way to demonstrate it. Same goes with all the other "reviews" out there, which to be honest are not that great because it's more complicated than what someone can show in a simple video. You really need to use it, and do different things.

Yes, I agree. The reality is that it is possible to get great performance like we saw in his videos. After all, I was able to get some nice shots on this shoot. BUT>. in no way was this as reliable, or as consistent as it would be with native glass. Taking a moment to think about what we *actually* saw on his video.. it shows that it "works" but, this is different vs. taking it in the hand, moving around, and truly using in a real situation, and in situations that change. Here is where the truth comes out.

Problem is that as a wedding photographers, you can't afford to miss any moments - for a camera to hunt as it does at the 43 minute mark is a scary scenario. And that was in perfect light! Imagine that happening at the moment of the kiss after the ceremony, throwing the bouquet etc...

I just got a A7R3, and I have 3 half decent Canon lenses I could potentially use. So I looked on the Facebook marketplace for people getting rid of Sigma and Metabones adapters. Every single one said their reason for selling was that they've switched fully to native Sony lenses. That tells me everything I need to know about how well the adapters work.

I've been a Canon shooter for years. I shoot the 1DxII and have many Canon lenses. I have considered Sony because of all the incredible fans (many of them former Canonestas). I'm in great shape, weight/size isn't a huge issue for me. It's all about function and quality. Hoping Canon will have a pro level mirror-less option without any adapter needed! This would be for my wife, who complains about size/weight so she is shooting an Fuji XT2 (Nice, but no contest compared to my image files). For jobs, I have no problems with the 1DXII, but it would be great for travel, family and leisure photography to have something smaller that has quality image files. Travis, is it possible there is a better adapter you could use for your Canon Glass. I feel your pain, you (like me) are heavily invested in Canon Glass. Good news is it your glass still has resale value. That Sony Glass is expensive, good luck!

As someone who didn't have the option of trying before buying, I took the plunge and upgraded from my 5D-II to a A7RIII. After using adapted glass (and the native 85/1.8) for several months now, I have no regrets. I do, however, have an answer for you as to why your outdoor test was such a fail. An SLR camera does all the focus while the aperture is wide open, and only stops it down to the desired setting as the shutter (or DOF preview button) is pressed. Mirrorless, on the other hand, works the aperture in real-time, so the camera is trying to focus with less light and I suspect that higher f-stops and longer lenses make it more difficult for the phase detect sensors to do their job. A "DOF un-preview" button would go a long way to helping adapted lens focusing. Shooting out in daylight with a remote strobe = f8 or f11 = difficult to focus Shooting natural light indoors with fast lens = f2 or f2.8 = good focus. But ultimately, you are correct - the longer the lens, the more difficult it is to focus and the process of translating Sony-> Sigma/Metabones -> Canon focus language needs to be accommodated for in your shooting style.

Dude, I so feel your pain. I took the plunge on the a7riii and metabones V adapter, at Christmas 2017, after seeing probably the same videos you did, talking about how great the eye AF worked with adapted Canon glass. My experience was much the same as yours. When you went off on your rant, I was saying "Yes! Yes!" Happily, I'm not invested as heavily in my Canon glass, so my plan was to use the adapter to ease my transition to Sony lenses. I've since picked up the Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM, and the difference in experience between the adapted Canon and native Sony lenses is night and day. I did a couple videos comparing the real world image quality and shutter lag between the Canon and Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses, but it's hard to convey the utter frustration when the adapted glass fails. I shoot dance photography, and my experience has been with shooting fast action, more than posed shots with eye AF. (though I've done that, too) The huge failure mode for me has been the camera locking up and crashing with adapted glass. Something I've never seen anyone else even mention in a video review.

Why not just buy native glass? I made the switch to Sony and bit the bullet on native glass. I honestly don’t think I can ever go back to a dslr, period. If the body has everything you want, then sell your canikon glass and buy native Sony glass. You’re not going to lose that much money, we all know what used glass sells for.

LOL. Do you shoot weddings? I have 6 L lenses. Most of them are less / around 50% return. If it were one, or two.. maybe. But, 6 it gets hard to "just sell, and switch" and this is why this video is so popular, because a lot of photographers are in this same boat. It would be $6K give or take to cover the delta in cost, plus the time needed to move the glass. and/or I would need to buy it all on credit, and then slowly sell off remaining etc. Then, I would need the camera body ($4.2K) and after selling mine, it would be about $2K. Then, I need a back up camera (A73) so thats another $2K. So, in all reality it really is like I said. It's about $10K to make the switch. THAT is a lot of cash when I already have gear that works fine. This is the issue, its a hard spot to be in. It comes down to what is worth it to me etc.

Travis Harris Photography I guess you just have to make the decision that’s best for you. I was able to sell all my Nikon glass for about 70% of what I paid for it all. My D850 sold for nearly 95% of what I paid for it. My other backup cameras I didn’t even keep track of because they were old anyway. I bought a 7riii and am waiting on a 7iii. I literally couldn’t be happier with Sony’s mirrorless cameras. I’m not sure I could go back to using dslr if I had to. It’s all personal preference at the end of the day. The condescension in your tone is unnecessary, though. I have and do shoot weddings, but it’s not my main thing. Weddings with my Sony cameras not a problem, they’re actually *better* with Sony since I’m using native glass. I never miss focus on critical shots....like ever. I’m glad I switched. Soon Nikon will release their mirrorless camera (supposedly 2019) and maybe canon will make one....someday. I genuinely hope they do because competition is a good thing for the consumers.

Hi JD. Thanks again for your thoughts. Sorry for tone. I just know that we are on two different levels of work, and need.. and coming into this thread of comments saying Sony is better with Native glass is something that I started off the video talking about, and makes me feel like your not paying any attention, nor are understanding the point of the video. Which = frustrating :-) NO ONE wanted to switch to SONY more then me. Please understand this, and listen to the full video. I get it. I know, and I agree. This was not the point of the video. I have a $25K camera bag.. and to flip this, its a major cost no matter how you cut it. Plain and simple. I am not getting 95% of my $7K camera that is used professionally for 6 years, a quick look on e-bay or other sites will show this. The cost breakdown I did in my last comment is accurate I assure you. (I have stayed up nights doing the actual real world research). Its a $10K switch for me, and in that cost comes some "need" and more "want" so I have to be careful as a responsible business owner. Serious, full-time pros can relate with this video on another level. Take a look at some of the other comments. Trust me, I made this video for me as I truly wanted this to happen. :-)

Travis, I really appreciate your vids, esp about high synch, I'm looking into a reliable system outdoors and Godox is still Chinese, after all. About the camera weight problem: why aren't you using the Spyder strap with your system? I use it with a 5dm3 and 70-200 2.8m2, it takes a LOAD of weight off the wrist and back and is amazingly comfortable. I also use a Rapid strap, thinking about going to Peak Design (who also have a hand strap, but it's not close to the Spyder hand Strap) Get the weight off your wrist and hip! Let me know if you give it a shot.

I'd be terrified to shoot weddings with any current mirrorless camera & I've been lucky enough to test allot of them . I used to use FF Canons & L glass for event, sports & landscape work & slowly moved over to Fuji which has been a great experience but weddings are obviously extremely challenging with changes in light, action & expectations & your tools have to be consistent & work flawlessly. I could shoot a wedding with my new cameras but I'd feel more comfortable with a DSLR at this point. Thank you for the honest review of your experience. Honestly, I would never rely on adaptors for my main business (in your case, wedding photography). Canon never disclose their EOS system, so, all the adapters can do is reverse engineering which is not a reliable way to do it. It works for you to be "able" to use your Canon glass on Sony bodies, but, if your main work depends on a perfect integration between body and lens, and all your glass is Canon, you must stay on Canon bodies or you must invest on Sony glass... Nice and very detailed review by the way! :D

Eh, I adapt my second shooter's Canon lenses such as the 24-70 2.8L II and the 85 1.4L IS during weddings at times. Depends on the lens, adapter, camera body and lighting conditions. Some work well, some are finicky, and some just don't work well at all. I mostly shoot native lenses but I would not really hesitate using adapted lenses if it isn't really low light and fast paced.

The Sony glass, and even the new Canon glass (such as a 35mm 1.4 L II) have an entirely new language. Very digital look to them due to their lack of CA and imperfections. The lenses with rendering characteristics of Canon L lenses are irreplaceable and Sony will never come out with them because we are past the era where no one except maybe Leica are purposely trying to build lenses with less sharpness for special purposes.

Very good video! Travis I don't make the majority of my income as a Photographer like you. So watching you try both adapters and several different settings and even going from portrait to landscape shows you made a big attempt trying every path to make it work. I sold nearly 17k in Nikon camera's and glass two weeks ago (ouch! Took a huge loss) to purchase 10k of Sony equipment. Originally I had planned on purchasing two A7 mkIII's, but then remembered the A9's 20 fps (compressed) with no black out shutter, I went for the A9. I use the same two lenses for much of my shooting (85mm and 70-200) except when shooting a wedding, then the 24-105 f4 becomes my work horse. None of the Sony 85mm's will give you that wonderful rendering that you can get from the Canon 85 f1.2L, but they are extremely sharp and really focus accurately. At nearly 59 years old and seeing that video is becoming a bigger part of my business. The small and very fast A9 lightens my load and gives me top notch video quality going forward. This mirrorless camera fits MY needs the best of what was available. My only concerns are the price of Sony glass and will the A9 hold up as well as my 5d mkiii and my D4.

The only one that I always has a little bit of problem is the 50mm f1.4 sometimes stop focus but I move the focusing ring manually and press the focus button on thecamera and works fine. A really interesting presentation, I especially appreciated your description of how you set your camera up, it gives amatuers like me insight to how pros work so thanks. Although not a pro, over the years I have built up a collection of L lenses because it doesn't take you too long to realise that the quality of your output is far more reliant on their quality than the actual camera body used and having experimented with adapted lenses on various formats had come to the conclusion that "native is pretty much always best". As a paper exercise I calculated that switching to another system whilst retaining the optical quality I already had would cost me around £8,000 ($10,800). Now as unlike you this is my hobby not a commercial toolset, the price was unacceptable besides which, for the type of photography I do, wildlife and landscapes mainly, my current kit delivers so there is no rush, I can afford to wait to see what Canon comes up with which I suspect will be pitched around the 5D series market segment. Although I will not be rushing out and buying a Sony, I am grateful to them because their technical innovations are forcing change on their competitors too which is good for photographers whatever brand you use.

Travis thanks for the video, I moved over for the a7ii and with the mc11 adapter it did well enough with my adapted glass which includes the trinity by Tamron, canon glass, and of course sigma. Main point is to turn on the phase detect area and have phase detect focusing on. The focus coverage is comparable to my Canon bodies, and where we would struggle with focus backlit subjects, and low light on longer lenses I had the same issues with my mk3 body canon. The difference is with my Tamron 70-200 mm glass on the mc11 if I back button focus and it missed. I would just continue to hold down back button while engaging the manual focus ring and it would jump to focus peaking mode so I never missed a beat during weddings, that in all honesty is quicker than auto focus on the mk3 in low light or backlit situations at times. The new round of a7's which I own the R is even way better rarely with adapted do I have to focus peak. I totally believe you were being straight up, and gave it a fair try, guess you might o of hitting the outside areas of the focus area, and direct into the sunlight I think the issue might be that the pdaf system which is directly on the sensor might be getting too much light in those scenarios. In your case I think if you are to make the switch you definitely need to go native, and saying that Tamron and Sigma will be releasing compelling options over the next year that will have you covered with the insane focus speed and features. Also the Canon mirrorless system will have the same adapted issues as they most likely will have to adapt their own lenses to a mirrorless sensor so they will be playing some catch up as the tech is different. Anyways sorry you had a bad experience, best of luck going forward buddy.

Travis Harris Photography I think it will work, just think it won't be comparable to the same lens on its DSLR home body.. For a pro like you it might not be good enough. Then the question will be do you invest in Sony native or Canon's future mirrorless lenses, at that point it will be Canon with the limited glass in the range. I would guess those focus and lens issues is what has lead to the delay with the Nikon system as they don't adapt well at all to mirrorless because of the older mount, and whether it has a motor etc as Nikon lenses and bodies have many that are built differently and will only work on certain bodies. One suggestion if you are in a hurry for some of those Sony features would be to buy the a7iii with a couple of native lenses and then bounce between the two system's as i did for a while. The godox flashes work across both systems as long as you have a trigger for each wirelessly, on body it has to be the one for that system. That was my choice in the end now I have 5 Sony's.. With the a7iii on back order. The other option if you can is to wait, and see what shakes out from Canon.

I have an m5 mirrorless from Canon and if the rumors are true of the Canon ffm having a different mount then you will have to adapt and I'll tell you there will be slight delays with using Canon EF on these bodies. The autofocus is decent with the native m5 lenses but when adapted every so often the EF lenses will hunt and miss focus especially moreso in low light. I've used it as an emergency backup when my 5diii was out of commission. I got the job done but not at the pace I'm used to. It was a nightmare. I heard that They did say they'll do something sexy for the adapted lens owners so we'll see. Maybe an interchangeable lens mount it sounds like but we'll see.

I am an enthusiast, owned Canon since 1984, recently moved to Sony. The A7iii changes everything with EVF, eye focus, HUGE phase detect area, incredible low light. Canon MUST hit a FF/mirrorless home run or be hurt badly. A Nikon fumble could sink them. Meanwhile Sony keeps moving so even with decent Canon/Nikon results a Sony rapid response/leapfrog is likely. C/N owners are placing a LOT of blind faith to not move. If C/N owners move today, lose 30% on glass. If C/N flub, owners will lose 70% on glass. Way, way too high a risk that I can see.

One key point with using the Metabones adapter- it needs time to calibrate itself to each lens, so if you're throwing a lens on for the first time it sucks. MC-11 compatibility is hit or miss as well. I wouldn't depend on adapting glass for paid work, but for hobbyists it's workable.

I have been considering a slow switch to Sony from canon and it also wouldn’t be possible without relying on adapted glass during the transition period. Do you think the reason one shoot went so much worse than the other is that one was strictly outdoor while the wedding was indoors mostly? If the Sony is relying on an IR assist lamp, I can imagine it getting drowned out outdoors in the sun. Curious if you have any impression on that possibly being the problem.

Interesting...I haven't had the chance tonight to watch the entire video yet, but I had great success with the 70-200mm/MC-11/A7iii at all focal lengths and pretty long distances. Latest firmware, Wide Focus Area, Eye-AF, Face-Detect, Continuous and Single AF. Weird. I wonder if it was because of the flexible spot as opposed to wide, giving it more to work with. I agree that even though I had great success with focus, my workflow is much slower than yours, doing just portrait photography. I would not consider it reliable for fast-paced wedding photography but for portrait shooters, it has been great and really quick and sharp. Also, I'm looking through the comments but I'm not sure I see what I'm about to mention: Did you notice the corner markers in the frame that limits the AF points when using Canon glass with the MC-11? I wonder if you're putting the flexible spot even partly outside of this box when you're in portrait mode. Even if you frame her face a little out of the designated rectangle and you have the flexible spot correctly placed, it'll still hunt. That might be your issue that you might not have been aware of. Maybe not though lol

Hi Brian! Thanks for the comment! I too do wonder about performance difference with the A73 vs the A9 on adapted glass. Some others have also indicated that it works better on this camera body vs. the older A9. There maybe something to this, and I will need to decide if its worth trying or not. Maybe I will reach out to the lens rental company, and see if I can get them to sponsor another test. I did not notice any of the markers in the EVF when using the adapters, so you may have something.. it would make sense that not all of the AF points would work (as I have seen).. so, this could have been part of the issue. Its not clear. Regardless, its still another form of compromise that I would need to deal with.. and in the end, has the same end result (use native glass for my kinda expectation) BUT.. if the A73 IS a lot better with all of this.. then, that could be something to consider. I think the smart move now is to hang tight, wait for Canon to see what they announce.. and go from there. Thanks so much for your help!

Travis Harris Photography I completely agree with you that it’s still a compromise. You can’t risk that unreliability on a job. If you want to see what I’m talking about, I uploaded a photo of the screen with the lines that I’m talking about to my Drive. Here’s the link: drive.google.com/open?id=1sWxGpzmORaQQLt4Y3WxLXlzn18I3nNtT As you can see, it still covers a generous portion of the screen, but it will never find focus anywhere outside of those lines. That being said, it seems like it covers the same area (about 68%) of the viewfinder as the A7Riii which is still generally quite good. These lines only appear with Canon glass mounted on the MC-11. Sigma lenses get full Sony system capabilities albeit a tiny bit slower maybe.

Gavin Fuerst I totally agree! It's all about the right tool for the job. Beyond that, it comes down to personal preference to one system or the other. No right or wrong. Then, there are what I call "hard limits" and for me this is the weight of the camera for my work. This is the need. The want is all the new tech that comes with the mirrorless system. I have owned my 1dx for 6 years and over 700k on it. It won't last forever 😋

It would seem your experience with adapted glass was not good. I've been a Sony shooter for 11 years. I started with A Mount full frame with the professional grade A900 followed by the A99. I then started to switch to A7R and mirrorless, before progressing to A7R2 and now A9. I still have and use my A99. I experienced similar poor performance on my A9, and A7R2 with adapted Sony A mount glass. I have to say that I have a lot of E mount glass now, even the G Master lenses, and they are fantastic on the A9. Everything you experienced with adapted Canon lenses disappears completely with native glass. Do I care if it takes 10 seconds to format a disk, no!

Nick Hills thanks so much for the reply! Sounds like you're well on your way with the Sony system and it's working well for you. I agree that the Sony system with Native glass is also amazing. There seems to be some misconception in my video perhaps I misspoke, but I did have a chance to use it with Native glass and I'm well aware of how amazing it is. With that said I'm too heavily invested in my current system and understandably I have to be very cautious to make any change. That was the whole point of this video to see if the adapters could help Segway that process. Unfortunately my conclusion is no. In regards to formatting a card for most people that's a non-issue. But you just wait until the day that you're standing at a wedding ceremony the bride starts walking down the aisle and you realize that you need to quickly change your card, now granted it's my responsibility to make sure I'm never in that situation and I fully understand that. But there are times when speed definitely matters in the fact that every other camera can format a card in 2 seconds is a glaring question as to why Sony can't do the same thing?

Good stuff, huge difference between real world and a setting where you can relax and take your time. No such thing for working photographer. I shoot volume sports, long days shoot 200+ locations per year. I use the D4, still love that camera. However, I have gone to a monopod this year because of the weight. I shoot the A7III with the MC-11 with the Canon 24-70 2.8L II and 70-200 2.8L IS II, sometimes with the 1.4 Extender III and eye and face detect work at every focal length. There are some focus features which don't work like Flexible Expandable Spot and Zone. In AF-C when shooting in burst it won't track subjects moving toward or away from the camera. However, in AF-C it tracks perfectly when taking individual frames. I shoot running races, natural light portrait sessions, studio sessions, of camera flash location sessions, and events... no it is not a contender against the 1Dx in snappy performance but the 1Dx (1 or 2) cannot compare when it comes to the files it produces. For me noise invariance is a game changer. I'm surprised how hard a time this setup gave you.
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 6 жыл бұрын
Have you also used the native versions of the same lens? I had moments where it worked well (the wedding I did). But, its not a consistent result at all with the adapter. I noted the MC-11 did better then the other (Metabones V).. but, for serious work I just would be too afraid to compromise with the adapters. The best thing would be to just pull the trigger and get the Sony glass, and then I think it would be great. On my end, the files were the same as what I get from my 1DX. I processed over 4,000 from the wedding, and session I did. I did not feel + or - about them. (which is good :-). Now, there are some differences here.. you used the A73.. maybe that's better with adapted glass. I have no idea.. for me, I would need the A9 for my work.. and this was a BIG no go!

Right now I'm shooting two systems, my 5D3s and one A7III. The only native glass I have for the Sony is the Batis 85mm which I'm absolutely in love with. I haven't shot the sony 24-70 or 70-200. They are unreasonably expensive IMO. Will be grabbing the Tamron 28-75 with native mount at the end of the month. Will figure out a 70-200 option soon. I don't like the Tamron or the Sigma for image quality. The Canon has spoiled me in that department. I tried the Metabones V as well and it was terrible for stills. Better for video but I don't do video. I shoot the 1Dx and the 1Dx II about 4 times a year. I have never shot the A9, but the A7III files are far superior in noise quality and dynamic range. The both of the 1Dx bodies have fantastic sensors but they are not ISO invariant so pushing files in post can cause nasty color problems. I never thought that would be a benefit to me because I generally nail exposure, but turns out having that DNR is very helpful for processing in Lr. At least for me. I had to turn the power saving option to 10 minutes in order for the camera to perform the way I wanted. It was way to laggy when it kept trying to save power. I'm shooting a theatre production over a few days next week. It will be the most challenging situation I've put the A7III in yet. Shooting running races is pretty old hat for me so not being able to use burst wasn't too much of an issue. I expect it to do fine and the silent shutter is going to help a lot.

@KevTCC
@KevTCC 6 жыл бұрын
I use it without issue. However there are some things missing. Eye AF works. Actually that's why I ended up getting the MC-11. I used Eye AF across the store (Henrys in Halifax) and it grabbed her eye perfectly at 2.8 and through her glasses. I didn't think to check more than that at the time. I returned the Metabones and got the MC-11. Zone AF, and Lockon AF, and expandable flexible spot DO NOT work at all with adapted glass. So you will have to manually track your subjects. Wide and Flexible Spot (S,M,L) work perfectly every time. Face Detect priority and Eye AF also work perfectly. As I mentioned before the big drawback I have is that in AF-C and shooting in Burst (of any speed, Lo, High, High+) with the subject moving TOWARD or AWAY from the camera you cannot shoot and track subjects. It will track them and your first shot will always be sharp (except in user error situations) but the following shots will be more and more out of focus. If you shoot single frames they will all be sharp. Subjects moving side to side will be tracked fine while shooting as fast as you want. It is just that the adapters cannot do the math fast enough for subjects moving toward or away. Stationary or subject moving side to side can be shot in AF-C and burst as fast as you want. So when the Bride & Groom are coming down the isle you will need to shoot single shots and not burst. It isn't perfect but it is good. I was deeply concerned when I realized the problem with AF-C and burst shooting, but I've adapted by shooting single shots. I only use burst at a wedding once or twice in a day and those are for stationary subjects: the first kiss and the flower toss. I will comment again after I shoot the theatre production next week. So I'll comment on Saturday and give you how it performs. I'm going to use the Zeiss Batis 85 for a lot of the shots I do for the rehearsals but will be using the 70-200 primarily for the performance. I'll put up a gallery for you if you like.

Give up on the adapted glass. Also, consider getting slightly slower glass to dramatically lower the weight. Personally, I used the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II for every major shoot I had. Once I switched to Sony, I decided to just go with the Zeiss Batis 135 instead. Because the AF points cover the entire frame, I never have to worry about focus/recompose (and the inherent issues with that) or cropping in post for composition (which wastes sensor real estate). Trying Sony mirrorless with a DSLR mindset may not be the best idea for most people. I recommend shooting it with a blank slate.

You talk about resale value and i do understand what you mean but when it comes to Sony who release more cameras per year than any other manufacturer, the resale value in a 1 year old Sony takes a nose drive due to it being superseded year on year, just ask A7RII owners.
@tbreit
@tbreit 6 жыл бұрын
Wilteduk, you are generally right on the A7Rii. Yet the A7Rii held its price quite well over 2.5 years and even held up after the A7Riii release. But, once the $2000 A7iii dropped it was hard to defend the A7Rii other than pure resolution. Looking back, the Canon 5Diii hammered the Gen1/2 units (just like Sony) with its huge improvements in features/performance but the marginal Gen4 improvements remain a hard sell. I am concerned though that Nikon will be hurt badly if they release a middling mirrorless. As for Sony pricing in general, I cannot see Gen 4 units hammering the Gen3 units like the recent Gen3 di to the Gen2's. There was simply so much new plowed into the new Gen3 Sony triplets (A9, A7Riii, A7iii) that older models were pummeled. Older Gen2 models lacked so many critical points (battery, PD focus, dual cards, joystick, etc) that the new Gen3 triplets were essentially backtracking to "repair" these weak points.

My 70-200 was sharp as a tack on my apsc camera but on my full frame was just a blurry mess once I had done the Micro adjustment it stopped hunting and caught focus straight away every time (this was a native lens to camera body scenario) but as there are quite a few areas here for variance in tolerance I thought I would ask.

Good video, thank you. I understand the pain in the back issue and the pain in the right hip in my case. As a wildlife photographer I am out shooting for 7 hours a day about 5 days a week. The weight of my D500 and heavy lenses plus my Olympus EM1 mark II and Oly 300mm f4 were killing me (well, making my back and hip ache). A couple of days ago I made the switch to a Sony A7III + Sony 100 - 400mm + Sony 90mm macro. Fortunately, it didn't cost me a penny as the value of my Nikon/Olympus kit covered the Sony stuff. After 30 days Sony are going to give me £180 cash back on the lenses. I never imagined I would change my D500 or EM1.2, but needs must. I have to say that the A7III with the two lenses I have aquired is simply stunning. The quality of the images blows my other two out of the water: and the autofocus is brilliant. I have owned 7 x Canon cameras over the years but had no problem changing to Nikon/Olympus. The same goes for changing to a much lighter and stunning Sony system.

fantastic video,I am just a hobbyist and shoot Sony and use native glass and results are usually good, using Sigma glass has also been good results,I totally agree with you,adapters are not reliable especially for your job ,it is either 100 % reliable or it is no go for you. I've seen the other videos you spoke of and found them to good to be true. The A7iii is a wonderful camera, checked it out with some of my native sony glass and took maybe a 40 shots in total and they turned out ok. I will follow your channel.

So I'm lined up to sign out an A7R III and the metabones to test out in a photojournalistic application with a mix of reportage, journalistic portraiture and sports. This vs my two 5D Mk IVs. My daily drivers are a Canon 70-200 2.8 II, Sigma 24 1.4, and 16-35 2.8 II, occasionally using the 85 1.8 and 50 1.4. So yeah, invested in gear, and I really don't care to deal with selling it all off. I'm going to stick completely to spot focus - I don't care to try eye AF at all. I don't expect it to handle sportsers sportsing at all, but I'm gonna give it a shot because why not. For portraits, this will be the interesting one. I do a lot of wider journalistic portraits with the 24, but also with the 70-200 - I'll test your hypothesis on the wider angle lenses doing better. I'll have to swing back and touch base with how that works.

If sigma or Tamron makes native Sony lenses, you could probably make the switch much cheaper. I've even considered buying the mc-11 adapter and selling my Canon glass for sigma glass. From what I understand, sigma lenses on the mc-11 work flawlessly.

Hello Travis and my fellow photographers..... I truly enjoyed and so appreciated this video. From someone that is/has switched this was a great insight. I watched this prior to the arrival of my A7III, so as you can guess I got very nervous based on Travis results. On the day of the delivery instead of being very excited, was very nervous fearing I would have the same results as Travis, but I'm happy to report that my A7III along with Metabones V worked flawlessly!!!! All five of my favorite lens including my 70-200 worked the AF to Eye AF......... hit everytime. I am no Fanboy and not completely switching totally just adding another piece to advance my work. Just wanted to share my results and feel free to reach put to me if need more information.

Just my 2 cents here. Ten grand to change to Sony GM lenses for a professional not to mention selling the Canon L lenses to lessen the loss shouldn't be that big of a deal surely? The Sony's blow Canon out of the water on almost every way. I have both and can live with the adapter limitation for hobby work but obviously would use the Sony GM for pro work. Do I wish Canon had a full frame mirrorless EF mount that could compete ... absolutely, but sadly so far they don't. Sony are years ahead in sensor technology, that's Canon and Nikon's main problem IMHO.

Let's see what happens in the next few months.. There maybe some new announcements that would save a ton of cash on the Canon front. Whenever your dealing with large sums of money, things are not as simple as you may think, especially when the present tool is perfectly fine.. (with the exception of the weight issues.. which, it what this all comes down to for me at the end of the day). With over $100K+ invested in my business.. every little bit matters at this point ;-)

Andreas Ludwig this is exactly correct. There is some evidence that shows that the a73 possibly may do better with adapted Canon glass. However I myself have yet to test it so I'm still a little skeptical. But it would make sense because the technology is newer in that new or camera body. For me, personally, I think it makes the most sense to just sit tight wait out the rest of this year and see what the announcement is. Truthfully this is been a pretty slow year for me for weddings and so it won't kill me to wait a little bit longer

Really appreciate your honesty here Travis. As a Sony Pro user since 2013, I actually even experienced your predicament. When I chose to invest in Sony over Canon years ago in 2013, Sony was using a completely different Mount. A-Mount. I used A-Mount cameras and glass up until the release of the E-Mount a7Rii in 2015. I tried using their own adapters and it just wasn't the same as native E-Mount glass. So, I had no choice but to buy ALL NEW FE-Mount Glass to use with my new(at the time) a7Rii and use my A-Mount Glass as a second body/combo until I could sell everything off. It was very frustrating as an original Sony investor into A-Mount to feel, for lack of a better word, abandoned :/ There were no new attempts to better their own Sony adapters other than what they had. So yeah, I bit the bullet and switched. Maybe I should make that video. "Sony A-Mount user forced to switch to E-Mount" . or, "A-Mount, the A=Abandoned" lol . Anyways, I love Sony's E-Mount now and have all native primes, GM and Zeiss lenses, and now have the a7Riii with my Rii as a second body. An AMAZING camera!!!! Couldn't be happier with my choices today. Cheers!

I’m not sure what’s the problem with your copy or adapter. I use both canon 24-70 and 70-200mm on my AIII and it works just fine in bright or dark light even though the sigma says clearly that their adapter is not for canon or any other glass. I also have the metabones V and it works far better then the MC-11 on my canon glass. I have also went with capture one pro, because Lightroom simply doesn’t do Sony’s photos any justice.

I don't think that there was any problem with the adapter's or the hardware. They were brand new. Perhaps the A9 is the issue.. possibly the new A73 does a better job, there are some other people here who have reported some experiences that lead me to believe that.

I do not think anyone is misleading anyone when it comes to Sony body and Canon glass. I shoot both camera systems because it makes me shoot and think differently with a mirrorless/ DSLR I currently use the 5D4, Sony A7R3 and A73. I think the people in the thread need to understand this situation is not a Sony issue or a Canon issue ( Never hear Canons name when people try and adapt lenses and it fails) This is a quality control issue with the adapters. After alot of reviews, I made a similar switch (Sony body with Canon Glass) I also purchased the MC11 and the Metabone Adapter. The MC11 would not focus with sigma but was perfect with Canon & my Tamron lenses (MC11 is sigma!) the metabones would not work at all! after taking them back to the shop and tried a some different stock of the same adpaters, I got different results each time. I have never heard anyone blaming Canon for the fact Sigma Art series are inconsistent when focusing, but everyone is jumping on the Sony bodies and almost blaming Sony for them not working with adaptive glass. So people need to start seeing this as Sony bodies are great, Canon lenses are great so what else could be the problem... The adapter!!!

I feel for you. I'm in a similar boat, not a pro but 20 years with Canon have picked a lot of its L glass. So I'm not switching and forced into playing the waiting game for Canon. However, there are many other things besides AF and minor weight differences like reliability. In 20 years Canon maybe failed me once on a 7DII because of some s/w glitch during a shoot but after a firmware update it went away and on another occasion a 450D at -20C (after it shot 4-5 days in such temperatures) after which it needed to go to service and it didn't cost much to put right. Other than that Canon delivers what is expected every time. I never had a lens fail on me and I had from entry level bodies from film all the way to the digital. Everything (from remotes to batteries) simply works as expected and I do not baby handle my gear. I'm a travel photographer mainly so my Canon gear goes in heat, in sea spray, cold, sand, vibrations doing off-road at the back of a motorcycle and so on. I don't think I can trust another brand. I wish the Canon tech (like sensors, dynamic range, low light focusing, ability to switch between full and crop modes was of course better) but these ares only one (and rather small) part of photography and eventually it will be addressed.

Dimitris Tsagdis yeah I hear ya. 8 years myself with Canon. Only failure was the shutter on my 1dx at 500K. Totally great. I agree with the reliability factor. For me, I just need a smaller camera. The weight of the 1dx on the wedding day is no joke. I can't tell you how much I can't stand it anymore. It's been 6 years. It's been 200 weddings. And it's been one trip to the hospital with back issues. With a backup body in my bag, in all honesty I think any of the mainstream manufacturers will be as reliable and in my case im never in extreme conditions. Im on controlled photoshoots and weddings. Lol. The camera I have now is build for war and I'm paying that price without ever getting on the front lines 😉
@dimitristsagdis7340
@dimitristsagdis7340 6 жыл бұрын
May I suggest that in the meantime you hire a second shooter to do the heavy lifting and you go in with a 4DIV and sniper the less demanding focus-wise shots. Controlled photoshoots would also be easier to manage with a 5DIV. Also I do not understand your part of the reply: "second body in the bag". Do you wear your bag when you shoot a wedding or a controlled shoot? I think not and if you do you should stop (pay for an assistant to watch it for you and fetch what you need). Also the 7DIII may be coming out this summer that may be even better and lighter than your 1dx (and much cheaper). Even the 7DII is pretty good for the focus critical shots and then use a 5DIV for the less demanding focus-wise part of the ceremony. I understand where you are coming from focus-wise. I have the 6D with few focus points and 7DII. I use the 7DII for wildlife, events, sports, and 6D on low light static shots, when I want to go all out to 16mm, or on a tripod and the like. And I have to carry the bag on my back all the time, so to speak, for travel photography. I know it is not ideal to shoot crop sensor but you have to find an interim solution (be it assistant, 5DIV+7DII or III when it comes out combo, monopod or whatever) cause your health is not coming back nor going to wait. I looked many times at the 1Dx and MII but as you experienced it is a beast and I cannot put that on my back on top of everything else I want to carry:-( I'm even hesitant on the upgrading to the 5DIV (bag space is at a premium and the 5DIV is larger enough from the 6D to ruin everything else). At any rate that's my problem :-( In short, you need to change your game one way or another cause the alternative will be that you'll be taken out of action and that's much more costly and irreparable. Carry on the good work.
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, for all the weddings I shoot I already have an assistant, however they are not shooting images that are delivered to clients. My brand and style is way too defined for that (this bleeds into a new topic). A lot of wedding photographers "divide and conquer" the wedding day I am just not one of them. This comes down to consistency, and client expectations at my level of the game. Everything has to be perfect, and match. My assistants shoot.. but in different ways. Too much to type now. Maybe a video later. 7D - anything is not a good choice for me. It's just not on the same playing field as the 1D and once you use that for a lifetime of work there is no going back. I have seen images from one of my assistants who use that camera, and its night and day difference in many, many ways vs. my 1DX. Colors, ISO, and dynamic range are big factors. No, the only real option is a 5D4 for me, or do a FULL switch to Sony with glass. This is the bottom line. What I meant before, was IF I have an extra camera body sitting in my camera bag.. then... the reliability factor is less to me. IF one camera fails, I put it down and pick up another one etc. ;-)
@dimitristsagdis7340
@dimitristsagdis7340 6 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if you've seen the 7DII results, a lot can be post-processed to achieve a consistent look with the 5D4. You clients would only be looking at photos from these two. Only you know how it compares to 1Dx. Moreover, even if you switch to SONY with all SONY lenses be aware that the ergonomics (lighter body vs heavy lens) will start putting pressure to your wrists and you'll be fighting a camera that wants to pull down all the time. Wedding after wedding you may just move your back problem to your wrists. There are no long term experiences with SONY at such settings. Hire a full SONY kit and use it for a few weddings. I don't like how the A7-9 Sonys feel in my hands and your palms may be sweaty, etc. the knobs, the angles of the body, you can press the crop button by accident... Just saying the grass always looks greener on the other side.

One of my best friends co-owns "Glossy Finish", which is one of the largest sports photography companies in the country. They employ hundreds of photographers nation wide, and I have seen it all. Please trust me, this is all that I do 100% of the day, day in and day out everyday.. :-) Mark my words.. a 7DII is not anywhere close to the same in terms of many factors as the 1DX. It's just not. Its not intended to be, and for the type of shooting I do, I need a different tool. I need full frame, and I need extreme ISO performance, I need the ability to map buttons, the list goes on.. I think the 7DII is great for a lot of things. Weddings is not one of them, not at the level in which I am shooting (not starting out). The color fidelity at high ISO is night and day difference on the two cameras. This is getting off topic, but I appreciate all of your ideas! Yes, the Sony is small.. I have small hands :-) It's perfect for me. I can tell, I assure you. 4,000 shots and 23hours of in the hand time / use.. was enough for me to "tell". There is no getting around it, the Sony is a much better and more capable camera system. It may not be as physically robust, or able to goto the arctic for assignments, but I dont care about that stuff. LOL. Just like I would not expect a Ferrari to drive in snow.

This is very true. My current camera (1DX) I have had since 2012. I have taken 700,000 shots with it, and replaced the shutter once. There is still nothing wrong with the camera. For me, I need something now that is smaller, and lighter. I have a real reason, and spoke about this in the video to want to switch. I also dont think keeping a camera for more then 6 years is realistic anyway. Tech changes very quickly, and the A9 truly has a lot of advantages over that of what was avail 6 years ago. It's not about the "images" its about the process, the size weight, the features, the EVF, and ways of working in the field. This makes a very big difference.

I know your drift Travis, The Eos R must be amazing too. I own a 5D mark III but same as you, it is heavy during a (day) shoot. That's why I looked for lighter gear and I liked the Fujifilm most. Bought me a X-T1 a few years ago and now own a X-H1 too. Doing portraits, sometimes a wedding and more Funerals. Love the image quality and the silent shutter on these occasions. Before I bought my first Fujifilm, I owned a Sony A6000 and adapted my Canon glass on it.....truly miserable! After 3 months I sold my Sony and bought the X-T1....I was and still am very amazed about the camera, a few weeks ago I bought the X-H1 with IBIS on board, and i am more amazed. almost 4 stops of camerashake catches the IBIS!

Very nice!! We will see how the new EOS R performs for me, in my world when it is released. I am in talks now with Canon to try and get one sooner than later. For IBIS, I dont have a need for that. In fact, I have never used the IS on my 70-200 LOL. Not once in 6 years. I know for video people this is a big deal, for me.. all I care about is fast user interface, fast AF, great ISO, and the ability to use my 6 L lenses so I dont need to spend a ton more money in a big switch. If the EOS R can give me that.. then, I am good. The only other draw back is the lack of duel cards for weddings. But, I have some additional thoughts and ideas on this I will share once I get the EOS R in hand.
@bleuswiffer
@bleuswiffer 6 жыл бұрын
Looking forward what your opinion is about the Eos R. I have recently seen some reviews, the lack of 2 cardslots and only one cardslot is bad. The focus is what Canon is. Stunningly you can not use your native EF lenses on the Eos R, there is another mount on it and you need a adapter. Some reviewers called the new Eos R a 5D Mark IV without a mirror.
@travisharrisphotography
@travisharrisphotography 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yeah, I see so many SO MANY people making "reviews" about cameras.. and honestly, most of them are from people who are not active photographers. They are "KZbinrs". I get it, there is a lack of features between the EOS R, and that of what Sony and other offer. But, this is also Canons first Mirrorless full frame. The first version of the Sony FF Mirrorless was horrid. LOL. The other thing.. is that the EOS R is not aimed at pros to start with. Its aimed at more advanced armatures. In another year (or less) we will see the real pro version of the EOS R, and it will be unreal nice. It will have all the features, and will replace the 1DX line (which is what I currently use). It's all a game of patience and time. What people actually "need" and "want" are often very different things. I remember not that long ago, I was shooting weddings with a 5D and 5D2 when thats all there was. (one card slot). We reduce risk by using smaller cards, and switching them often vs. all images on big cards. Granted, in todays world 2 card slots is great for backup and a feature I admit I wish the EOS R had. But, again.. this is not a common feature on most entry level cameras. So, in my mind the EOS R will be a backup to whatever comes after it :-) and for me, this will be perfect!

i found out from a friend that over 135mm on the 70-200 2.8 L IS II can be spotty at best. but that doesnt explain why the 85mm 1.2 L was doing it. if you didnt need the speed of an a9 (20fps and the algorithm for its AF) the A7iii would be better, at least with that you can get 10FPS while using strobes. and that would free up a few grand to cover the differences for the lenses ( that way you can at least replace the 70-200 with the 2.8 GM, and your 85 with the 1.4 GM ) then its the 16-35 and the macro. I am interested to see your transition. as I do have a bit of glass as well, and it seems that native is still a more realistic approach when it comes to run and gun and weddings

For the record they are the same cards used in the Canon and formatting takes a fraction of a second. The difference is how Sony formats the cards. Not the speed of the card. There are different levels of format and unfortunately Sony has to write data to the card in order to format VS other camera manufacturers which don't do that.

Travis Harris Photography Understood, but have u tried Sony G card which has a speed of 300 MB/s read and 299MB/s write speed. Try that in UHS-II slot and see

It will not matter in this example. Even if it does *slightly* make it faster, its not at all, remotely as fast as it is on my 1DX, and every other camera in the world :-) There is ZERO need for me to buy a card that is 300mb/sec for wedding photos. LMAO. 95/sec that I currently use are also way overkill. My point is simple, its a noticeable difference plain and simple. and if I need to buy a new, faster card.. then, this is another issue as far as I am concerned. I cant "try it again" I did not buy the camera, so I will take your word that its faster with the faster cards. But.. then.. again.. are both the slots the same? because... if they are not, then I still have to wait for card #2. ;-)

effwww another theory that I have... And keep in mind I don't have any evidence to back this up this is just an educated guess based on my knowledge of how Electronics work. Is that on the Sony cameras when you perform a format function it's going and it's writing zeros to all the sectors of the card overriding the data that was last on the card. On the Canon and on the Nikon and most other cameras they don't actually do this. They leave the sectors open and just allow to overwrite the data as you continue to shoot. This results in a much quicker formatting process. You can see the same effects when you format a hard drive inside of the operating system on your computer. If you look closely you have different format options depending on the security that you want to perform. The reason why my 1 DX format a card so fast is because it doesn't actually write any data over the old data. It just allows me to overwrite the old data with the new photos that are taken. And to be honest this is much better because in the event that I accidentally start shooting on a card that has data on it that I haven't downloaded I can be able to retrieve that old data using special software. Whereas on the Sony there's a chance if it is going and writing zeros to all the sectors on the card during the format this may not be possible

Travis Harris Photography Only one of the slot is UHS-2, so you are right if you are talking about both slot
