I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in the video, but this is also a great solution for when it comes to bypassing the factory amp and hooking up an aftermarket one instead... especially if retaining the factory stereo. Just splice these to the speaker input wires and then connect the output wires directly to the amp.

You started off the video saying, "Why would anybody want to turn an RCA cable into a speaker wire" - let me tell you my predicament. I have a receiver which has 'Main Speakers" inputs as well as "Remote Speakers". The "Main Speakers" requires speaker wire to be used and the "Remote Speakers" requires RCA. For my setup I have two nice Floor/tower speakers plugged into the "Main Speakers" using speaker wire. I then have a nice set of wireless Griffin spekers plugged in to the "Remote Speakers" using RCA. It worked perfect for quite a while. Now I am looking to upgrade to a different receiver, and all of the receivers I have looked at have options for 'Speaker A' and 'Speaker B'. The problem: I can't plug the Griffin wireless into "Speaker B" unless I somehow get the RCA from the Griffin to turn into speaker wire to put into the receiver. This may be a silly thing to be asking, and probably exposes my amateur experience with audio, but I haven't found anybody addressing this issue online anywhere. Thanks!

So here's one reason a person would want to step down from RCA to regular speaker wire: Salvaging a set of speakers on a used car. I bought an 06 Malibu and the previous owner had stripped out the rear speakers and the amp he had installed, and while I was trying to replace the speakers, I found that simply hooking up the old speaker wire to some OEM speakers wasn't going to work, since the audio is now going through the damned RCA cables. Is there any way to get the stock rear speakers to work without tearing apart the dash and undoing the RCA conversion?

So could I line out just the subwoofer wire to an external amp and then run that back to the sub, increasing its RMS? It's a 19 step process to take the stock receiver out and I really dont have the time nor patience for that

you can splice into it anywhere along the speaker line aslong as its recieving the signal. all it does is reduces the voltage into a lower one the amp can use. speakers usually use around 10v where as the amp only needs 5v roughly

Hi! Thanks for the vid. Question: I want to hook up a four ch. amp to power aftermarket (alpine type r) all four door speakers. Every video on here talks about hooking up subs. I have that amp and subs figured out. I need to find out how to do my other amp, for my door speakers. How do I take the wires from my stock head unit, without rca output, to go into my amp’s four channels of rca inputs? Thanks if you can answer this!
@daytondowning9364
@daytondowning9364 6 жыл бұрын
You wire the door speakers the left and right to the left and right channels off the amplifier. It's recommended to have an aftermarket head unit. For example my head unit has 3 sets of RCA Plugs. One for fronts,rears,and subwoofer. You'd run the Rca's from the amplifier to your head unit. If not possible...which it should be if you bought a nice enough head unit.

Hello and great video.! My question had to do with a clean signal from the RCA. Now I have a LC7i connected via high level output with the RCA's going to my amp. I inquired with Audio Control and they told me the signal will be clean. I found out that my head unit by Levels is clean up to volume 27 with the high level outputs, and clean to volume 35, on the R C A's on back of the head unit. Since in running the high level through the LC7I, won't I get the same clean signal at volume 35 as of I just hooked up RCA's to the back of the head unit?

You don't need a LC7i if you have rca on the back of a head unit
@masterdebater8757
@masterdebater8757 2 жыл бұрын
When using low level/sub outputs on a head unit: imagine it this way it is a 2/4volt output think of it as a water hose the noise on that line will be a pencil lead through the hose and the 2volt signal will be slightly bigger than the pencil lead so when that signal hits the amp both the noise and signal are amplified equally. with a 4volt rca signal the noise is same but the signal doubles its size. Then you go to speaker level outputs maybe up around 10volts but the noise is still that pencil lead size so the amp gets a fatter signal with the same level of noise as the other preamp outputs.. LOC's will amplify both signal and noise! Cheap head units simply use a resistor after the HU's amps so they arent actually pre-amp at all they are low or high level outputs still with noise. The idea to use speaker outputs is simply to not be amplifying the noise at the same ratio as the signal. Using one these LOC's is no different than using a old style active crossover with a speaker level input and setting the "input" to the off setting which cuts the signal down to a set voltage that is acceptable to most amplifiers. If that old school active crossover is used after an amp say for cars speakers you would set input to "on" this allows the power through, if used before a sub amp you would set the input to "off" chopping the signal voltage down and send the outputs to a mono/sub amp and the mid/high outputs to your multi channel amp if not using the HU's outputs to power any speakers.. The entire idea of these LOC's, passive and active crossovers with input control is to keep that pencil lead thickness from being amplified but to get the max voltage input the amplifier can take this reduces the amount of gain needed to reach the desired wattage output with the least amount of amplified noise. If the noise of the water hose is amplified you may hear hissing, window wipers cycles, engine rpm noises and many more. How bad are those noises for your equipment i cannot say but i imagine even if they are less than audible/noticeable that they are bad for your system. In my days RCA outputs was new and all the rave but now with modern equipment it is frowned upon to use the low-level or sub outputs due to amplifying the HU's noise. It is 100% preferred to have actual pre-amp HU outputs or use the speaker outputs and cut the voltage of that down to the level the amp can take. Doing that you may have 4-10volt input to the amp with a 1/4 width noise versus 2/4volt with an 1/1 width noise ratio. With all that said none of this will be louder or change where the HU's distortion comes in nor will it make your amp put out more than rated power unless it could have done that prior. What it will do is clean up the signal allowing your bass to hit harder because it isnt wasting energy to produce the noisy parts of the signal. That is the same effect you get when your setting the subsonic and LP filters correctly your amp isnt wasting energy to play 20hz or below tones you cannot hear or 180hz and higher tones that your mids are designed to play.. In both of those cases your subs hit a low impedance (high resistance) playing frequencies beyond what they are designed for which pulls massive power from the amp and dumps tons of heat in the amp/subwoofer to play those frequencies thusly when your 25-150hz bass note hits the energy was already wasted playing the sub 20hz and 180hz up signals and your bass note dont hit hard like it should. Keeping your equipment in the respective ranges it was designed for and playing the proper signals over the corresponding drivers is very important.. So many people out there have there LP set to as high as 250hz and those people cant tell the difference from a woofer and a subwoofer they can not be bothered to know the frequency ranges of those speakers/drivers. I could hand most people a 6x9 woofer and say this is a woofer and they would think im am BS'ing them. Anyway this long enough i hope it helps and good luck on your setup.

Question, stock stereos, I have read, change the bass out/E.Q.(not sure of terminology) lower as the volume increases to protect the stock speakers. Using just speaker wire to RCA, can you control bass level or do I need a line output control like an Audiocontrol LC7i. I have a 2012 Double cab Tacoma (w/o entune) and I want to add speakers (6 1/2" components front & rear, 10" sub, powered by 5 channel amp). If I plan on installing everything myself. Glenn Seeley With the vast majority of aftermarket stereos, manufacturers deliberately cut down the voltage going out on the RCA jacks. This is because their noise levels at normal voltage are downright intolerable. This method gives the amp(s) the best and most clean signal possible.
