This video renewed my hope in the next generation of physicians! As a 70 yo gynecologist still practicing part time, I have been recommending low carb to patients since reversing my own pre diabetes with keto in 2018. I must say that it is often easier said than done in city where eating carb heavy Soul Food has been the norm for generations (Memphis). Those that have been motivated by pre-diabetes and/or PCOS and commit to low carb, however, have experienced great improvements in their health!

My wife’s family is from South America, and I’ve often thought that some clever chef needs to figure out versions of ethnic dishes to help those people get the benefits of low carb. Peruvian meals always have mounds of rice or potatoes. The ‘modern’ Peruvians in the cities also have pasta all the time. The result is far more obesity, diabetes, and heart disease than their grandparents had.

Scurvy, lol.. I've never eaten a vegetable in my life. Never, none. (I'd be the kid still being made to sit at the table "until", at bedtime.. refusing. Always joked that I must be 'allergic', friends/family said I'd be sick or dead by 20) ....................... Well, I turned 52 in May. Still not a speck of vegetables & the only fruit I've eaten is maybe a bite of apple or pumpkin pie once every 5 yrs or so, at some holiday gathering. No lettuce, no nothing... on anything.. ever. Oh & I'm pretty much the only one in my fam. who doesn't have stomach issues, IBS, my Gram had colon cancer/ostomy. I'm the only one without high blood pressure & am not on any meds, etc. :)

I've been diagnosed as a T2 diabetic since 1996. I was deliberately given insulin as a first step to get my sugars down and to show me the consequences of a 'hypo'. After about 5 years on oral medicines my doctors and physicians all prescribed insulin which I pushed back on. I'm glad I did, because I now know they were all wrong, not only about insulin to control T2, but also about diet, nutrition, exercise, weight loss and lifestyle changes. Strange that all this time, despite repeated requests from me for a fasting insulin test, no-one thought I needed one. Low-Carb, Keto, Carnivore wasn't part of the language they spoke. I had to work it out for myself using root-cause solutions. I now have a diabetes practicioner who understands this stuff and is great!

Low carb and very low carb diets have been shown as very beneficial for T2 diabetes, but what has been largely ignored is the effect the diets have on lipids, especially LDL-C. When I started Keto, my BMI was 25 and my LDL-C was 132 mg/dL. In 1 year, my BMI was 24 but my LDL-C went up to 176. My doctor was very worried about the risk of cardiovascular disease this represented. A recent meta-analysis showed that people with low BMI have a rise in LDL-C on Keto, but in high BMI, this doesn't happen. I'm not worried because my trig/HDL-C ratio is 2, which indicates my LDL particles are the large buoyant size that isn't associated with atherosclerosis. I think these videos on Keto should include the effects on lipid profile.

What I’m having a hard time with is making actual meals to eat of whole foods, and get full. Meats and vegetables and fruits while getting adequate amounts of protein for my weightlifting. I’m a busy hairstylist that doesn’t get a lunch hour. We eat we when can. That can be 1 minute, 5 mns, actually feel fortunate when it’s 10+ mns. So things I can grab but not processed. I’ve done hard boiled eggs a lot but get to a point where I can stomach another egg for awhile. Meal prep for me n my husband beginning of the week. Home made chicken salad-chicken, celery, avocado mayo, weighed out too-put into a pepper split in half. Thats our “bread”. Been eating whole fat Greek yogurt w/ strawberries chopped up w/serving of walnuts n 10-15 grams of honey. Eat those things almost every day. Need more options please! That’s all I can think of for now.

Whole milk cottage cheese w/no added corn starch. "Meat cookies" - long-term carnivore Kelly Hogan's name for cooked burger patties kept in the fridge for a quick meal or snack. Cooked shrimp (buy in bulk on sale) w/mayo or butter dip. Baked chicken thighs. Container of cheese chunks and chunks of canned lunch meat (WM has a lower-sodium version which actually has 1 gram of protein more per serving than the famous brand) with mayo dip.

@TracyC7414 - Congrats ! on getting going and sounds like a great effort so far. Excellent that your husband is on board! The same things happened to me. 80 hr a wk job in tow, I dove in, watched every keto YT recipe I could find. Most good, but to your point take time. I had to redefine what a “meal” is. “Spaghetti” made with keto almond flour noodles became 3/4 lb cooked burger meat w/ 2 Tbsp sugar free marinara and a salad. Simplify Simplify. Commit to 90 days super simple just to ease the stress and reach a milestone THEN decide how much to complicate it. Food became more about sustenance and health than social, family, occasion, or creative. Try three different meats as “food groups”. Best of luck!!

Guidelines are designed to be a starting point not an ending point. It is unnerving to me that doctors treat guidelines and reference ranges as set in stone. My doctor was not concerned about my fasting glucose creeping up from low 80s in my 20s to low 100s in my early 40s simply because it still fell within “the range”. Both parents have Type 2 Diabetes and it was clear to me that I needed to be concerned about it. I lowered the carbs in my diet and my glucose came down. THEN my doctor was suddenly concerned. 🤓 Apparently blood glucose being on the rise is okay but a temporary increase in my total cholesterol during fat loss is cause for alarm. 🙄

In addition to drug companies, there is the lobby of food multinationals. 99% of them -I want to be optimistic!- are more interested in making profits using "non-food-ingredients" to produce and sell us what they call food and nutrition! The both of these lobbies are "strictly connected" with politicians -we want to be diplomatic!. I had an insuline resistance which I could drastically slow down with cheto and/or low carb (=no more than gr 20 net carbohydrates per day) combined with intermittent fasting. Either 18:6 fasting: meaning three meals a day without any snacks at all or omad fasting: one meal a day for a couple of days whenever I travel and visit my family in Italy (Christmas, Easter and so). No pasta, no bread, no rice, no potatoes, no processed food, no sugar and sweetens at all. It took me three months and was hard because I happen to be Italian, southern Italian actually! I walk fastly at least one hour per day (=taking and leaving the bus three station before my destination). I lost kilos, water retention reduced remarkably, blood pressure as well as thryglicerids and insulin are within normal range now. Once a month only, I have homemade pasta and bread which I personally bake and cook using true integral flour, extra vergin olive oil, low warm water and just a little bit of sea salt. Well, I really enjoy them without affecting the positive results achieved.

@AdaptYourLife what is the website that Dr Laura Buchanan mentioned where you can search to find low carb friendly physicians? I live in Raleigh, NC and am struggling with talking to and working with, much less educating my PCP and my cardiologist. My blood pressure skyrockets every time I go to see them, even though when I take it at home it's perfectly normal. But of course they want to put me on blood pressure medication and statins because my blood pressure goes up in dread at seeing them, and because they only look at my LDL and not my great high HDL and low triglycerides, plus the fact that I'm steadily losing weight and getting stronger and more flexible and more energetic by the day. All the low carb/keto/carnivore Doctors here on YT have helped me so much in the past year and I have been empowered with the information they provided to turn my health around.

Low carb is not for everyone. Some people are carb intolerant, while others require plenty of carbs to reach their daily high calorie intake or else they will never gain weight, because the abundant fat and protein they consume are not enough for their daily needs. There is no one diet for everyone, and we each are different, metabolically, different lifestyles, different genetics, different health issues or lack of them. I would say that there are plenty of people eating like professional athletes while having sedentary lifestyles, and that is the issue.

Yeah I respectfully disagree. I think 99% of people could thrive eating only fatty meat. I seriously doubt 99% of people could thrive eating high carb plants with some lean meat. You can do ok eating a clean diet with clean whole food carbs, but you’re not going to be at optimal health and energy.
@hyperborean2576
@hyperborean2576 3 ай бұрын
@@estherruth4692 Then we do not disagree. I also think the same. I just stated that some people require the energy and extra calories of carbs for their high performance lifestyle. Athletes consume carbs pre-workout, intra workout and post-workout, those are used to fuel the intense exercise and will be depleted, the body will respond in a very different way than eating the same amount of carbs and do not exercise intensely. The body will simply store them as fat and water. Not healthy at all in this modern life where carbs are everywhere. But this is actually a useful survival mechanism if we were still hunter gatherers, the body would simply store energy to use later in periods of starvation. It is possible to be a low carb athlete, it's just much harder and will take a long time to adapt to that state of "fight or flight" where the body will be in constant stress and high cortisol levels (that's the case with very low body fat athletes).
