As keto diets become increasingly popular and more people report incredible transformations in their health from eating this way, it’s inevitable that some controversy will arise and that criticism will be levied against this approach, since it’s so different from conventional teaching about “healthy diets.” But Dr. Westman has been treating patients using the keto diet in a medical clinic for more than 20 years, helping them to lose weight and become free of long lists of chronic health issues.
So what does Dr. Westman have to say in response to other medical professionals who warn that there’s “very bad news for the keto diet?” Find out in his latest video.

After being a vegetarian for over 10 years with failing health from a so healthy vegetarian diet. I had joint pain brain fog and gallbladder pains. I made the switch to a keto diet then a year later and animal-based diet and it saved my health. After two years of being on an animal-based diet I'm strong and healthy again all my health issues are gone my blood work is great!

I was vegan/vegetarian for 40 years, developed diabetic damage. I began keto a year ago, and this damage is slowly retreating... emphisis, slowly. I used to work for an organization that promoted an athletic, vegan/vegetarian lifestyle. Some of my friends who still eat that way are obese, in poor health. The woman who ended up in charge of the above organization is in recovery from a stroke. Another vegan friend is on statin drugs, has a huge belly. I lost a former coworker from the above organization to cancer. He was vegetarian, an athlete, marathon runner, did everything right.... I think I dodged a bullet by switching to keto.... i miss that man.

What is the most sad to me is that people cannot connect the dots. Do you think it’s an accident that Bill Gates is pushing crickets and convincing the government that humans should no longer be eating meat and they are literally trying to take that away. They do not want a healthy population, cuts into big Pharma profits and they certainly don’t want people to know that the carnivore diet is the way to health and is a cure for high blood pressure and for diabetes and for chronic pain and for autoimmune issues and the list is endless! That’s why they want to take it away. All these pathetic people who try to claim otherwise are just idiots.

@@marianne1959 I agree with "a way of eating", not so much with "proper human diet" the science isn't there for that But especially if done properly, it's fine. I'm just scared when people start waxing poetic about how they now eat lard and bacon and butter all the time. Don't get me wrong, some of that, great. An abundance of that, not so great. And as for the argument of "it's the diet that made us develop into the humans we are, it's natura, etc." -- Just look up the average life expectancy of our prehistoric ancestors. Evolution depends on procreation and making it to that age and a bit beyond to set up the next gen. Longevity is a bit of an othogonal question.

Thank you Dr Westman. I was diagnosed pre diabetic 18 months ago. My Doctor wanted to discuss medication. I said NO! Eliminated sugar immediately! Four weeks later, blood tested normal. Went on keto diet, measuring ketosis daily for 3 months, 6 months later a complete liver scan and testing showed the liver was back to being perfectly normal (I.e. not stiff) and with all cysts, etc., gone. I had lived most my life on the high carb-fibre diet recommended by the Gov.t bodies since the 70's. What a total CF that was.

Apparently Dr. SugarMD slept through that lecture in med school when they explained gluconeogenesis, which is the metabolic pathway whereby the liver creates glucose in the amounts necessary when there is no or very little dietary intake of carbohydrates. That's what prevents the blood sugar from going to zero on a ketogenic diet if the small amount of carbs eaten isn't sufficient. When people become adapted to the keto diet, they don't become hypoglycemic.

Please do contact the clinic. This video (the SugarMD) made me pretty angry when I watched it. ESPECIALLY the idiotic comment that the pancreas will atrophy if you don't eat carbs. Every shred of evidence of an atrophied pancreas pointed to either disease (cancer), consistently high BG, or pancreatitis! Consistently high BG doing the familiar burning out of the pancreas from overuse, not under use (which logically makes no sense anyway). I've been trying to get my husband to follow low carb as he's pre-diabetic and hypertensive, but he keeps repeating nonsense like this. (not exactly, but close) We need grains and starches, Keto isn't sustainable, etc. I also don't get how this diet/lifestyle is "complex" either. Lean protein, some fat, non-starchy vegetables and the occasional small serving of lowish sugar fruit. I'd love to hear your take on the recent erythritol paper debacle!

The thing that I like about Dr. Westman is that he seems to have an open mind. If the data actually showed a problem with his current recommendations, he would change them. If eating apples every day reversed insulin resistance and fostered weight loss, he would recommend it. Another thing these videos never mention about keto is that it takes away the sugar craving. So, no matter what calories-in-calories-out diet they suggest, without carb restriction, people like me can't stick to it long term.

That was one thing that was an added bonus for me. I was diagnosed with diabetes in October 2021 and decided to go low carb. I was surprised at how quickly I stopped feeling hangry. I used to have to eat within a half hour of getting hungry before. And now that I am well and truly fat adapted (16 months low carb now) I've started delaying my breakfast until noon 4 days a week. And on Sunday I even mowed the front yard before eating my meal! I did make sure that I had water and electrolytes.

When I was first diagnosed as a T2 diabetic in Nov 2022 I stumbled across SugarMd.. I watched their videos and continued to research things on my own and the more I learned the more their recommendations and statements didn't mesh up with what I learned. I eventually moved on from them when I discovered keto and carnivore in which the things I was learning clearly matched up. In the time since I have been "ketovore" and my HBA1C has gone from 10.1 to 5.2. My daily fasting glucose went from 380 to 100. I am no longer on metformin. I am 51 and started at just under 240lbs, I am now down to 210lbs. But the best of all is how I feel. My diet is not too restrictive by any means. It is enjoyable. I t is easy for me to stay on, my mood has improved and I physically feel better than I have in decades. I love your quote from Dr. Lustig... That is an amazing quote. I love it.

Thank you Dr Westman for this responsive video. I follow Sugar MD. He has some good info to share - mostly. When I saw his video condemning Keto, I was alarmed. I watched it and knew his info was not correct in a bunch of his statements and it shook my belief in his knowledge of medicine and nutrition. My background is being an RN. I have also done keto since 2017- lost 40 lbs (233 to 192) in the first 12 months of doing keto. Then Covid hit and I regained 15 of those lbs and settled out at 206 for 2 years. My type 2 worsened (keto got me off all meds) and A1C went from 6.3 to 8.1 in 12 months. I was cheating with bread, french fries and pasta- not a lot but it was enough to scare the crap out of me. I am 64 and did not want to end up on insulin in my older age. So I jumped back on keto/low carb starting at 215 lbs and a year later I am 170 lbs and my A1C went down to somewhere in the 6.x range. Still working to lose the last 20 lbs to my goal. I follow Dr Berry and highly respect him for all he has done to shine the light on nutrition and health. I found you thru him and Dr Hallberg several years ago and follow you too!! Other than being type 2, the rest of me is very healthy and not on any meds presently. Hopefully soon I will be able to say I reversed my diabetes thanks to Dr Sarah Hallberg and her ted talk I watch all those years ago ;). May she RIP.

I'm insulin resistant, so I tend to eat as low-carb as possible so as not to develop diabetes. (I don't do standard keto as I find it too fat-heavy for me, but I do keep my total carbs to below 50.) When I was hospitalised for covid in May 2021, the hilospital nutritionist here in Ontario wanted me to eat a diet with up to 180 g of carbs a day, which I refused. The doctors instructed the nurses to stop monitoring my blood sugar levels after Day 4 as they'd discovered my way of eating was keeping them consistently within the healthy normal range. I felt it was a nice, easy lesson in nutrition for all of them. 🙂

His argument is based on the American Diabetes Association guidelines. He was very proud to show me the large fold out given to him by his doctor "proving" that. Well, it's true that more money is made off you if you are a diabetic. I've yet to find one of the Associations that give accurate information. Returned to keto and moderate exercise (16K steps a day) and within a month 20lbs have already dropped off! A good concept for avoiding the controversy of losing the ability to digest carbs is to do what some call "Carb cycling", where you do your Keto eating style for three or four months and then do a month of eating a "healthy" carb based diet (50% of calories from carbs). I plan to do that in June. Now I have to figure out how you eat " healthy" carbs! Lol! BTW, all my vitals and bloodwork looks near near perfect while on Keto and my primary care Doctor has given me the thumbs up on Keto and Intermittent Fasting ways. She even told me I have the heart of teenage athlete - I'm sixty-three, lol!

After 3 years on Keto, had a heart attack and now have 3 stents; while on Keto, I changed my A1C from 10.1 to 5.2 (latest 5.7). Trig/HDL ratio finally under 2 while 2016 ratio was 13. Trig down to 92 from 434 (2016), HDL 47 up from 33-38. LDL between 141-210 though more recently on the lower side. Cardiologists seem to be plant based as the guy who did my stents wants me on a Mediterranean diet (there’s apparently a Keto version) while his partner described an entirely plant-based diet with grains, beans, veggies and fruit. I will note that I was in the low fat generation so eating high fiber cereals in the AM and a sandwich, carrots & apple were my primary staples. I had 100% blockage, 90% blockage and 70%, the latter without stent. I asked how long this had been going on, to which the cardiologist said 15-20 years. But of course, these guys come after Keto instead of my historical diet. There’s more to the diet of course as I loved bread, pizza, beer and anything sweet especially chocolate. Changed to whole grains, Ezekial, etc, ACV, olive oil, etc moderate excersize, counted calories, went off ACTOS, lost 60 lbs. But A1c stayed 7.5ish, cholesterol and triclicerides stayed awful. Last 2 stress test showed a very strong heart and clear arteries for my age. Started 4 months of IF 18 months ago, reduced carbs to 30 per meal, still Mediteranian = in 4 months A1C down to 6.0, Cholesterol "perfect", still high triclicerides, lost only 10 lbs (after gaining 30 covid lbs, and restricted activity due to pain). Kidney function improving, but yo yo s. Then went 20 carbs a day, zero grains, potatoes, etc. probably too much protein and dairy = now stuck, no lab change, no weight loss in over a year. Just diagnosed with Hashimotos. Had 2 midnight suget in 40s, have had to add bed time snack, ruining fasting. Not sure what to do now. Wait for thyroid meds and supplements to kick in, go back to Mediteranian/ KETOish? Add some whole grains? Endocrinologist insists I follow ADA, 30 carbs including grains per 3 meals + snacks. But I'm not going back to that, I think it just maintains diabetes andim I think my labs will go backward.
