Keto is easy. Give up sugar and starchy foods. ( this is the hardest part because of carb addiction) Eat animal protein to fill 1/3 to 1/2 your plate, fill the other 1/2 of your plate with low starch/low sugar vegetables. Use butter , olive oil, or bacon fat to cook. Salt to taste. You know you’re in ketosis when you can smell your breath change.

Great interview. I started eating this way in the 1960s. Aging is definitely a factor in weight loss, even on a low carb regime. I cannot eat as many carbs as I once could. These days, I eat very low carb meals and do 16:8 intermittent fasting. When I follow this way of eating carefully, I feel good, and have virtually no cravings. When I eat the wrong foods, I have various symptoms that warn me not to do that again, and if I continue, I get intense cravings, along with mood swings, especially being "hangry" if a meal is at all delayed.

They basically are! I even have two fellow ICU (!!!) nurses who are taking Ozempic because they “can’t live without my carbs”. 🙄 One of them is always complaining about how tired and nauseated it makes her. SMH

Thank you for sharing! Good to know! Btw technically cucumbers, bell peppers, and tomatoes are fruits. Do I also need to avoid those as well? I love putting them in scrambled eggs and mixing with canned salmon for example 😕

God yes re the ketones!! I totally forgot about those early symptoms, having been eating keto so long now; how the keto breath other weird symptoms, extra thirst and dry mouth, having to pee so often early on were not very pleasant but they eventually subsided..today I don’t have any of those symptoms and I don’t utilize a ketone measurement system and have done just naturally what you outlined. Over time and with learning I adjusted so I just keep my carbs low and eat moderate protein and higher fat and I have a daily eating window except if there are family celebrations or etc. I’ve now been doing this since 2018 except for one short period after an injury but went back after noting negative health changes that were a thing of the past in my keto journey were returning as I abandoned (very temporarily) following keto. My family has a history of type 1 diabetes so that was my original impetus for doing keto ... hoping to avoid that but the benefits have been so much greater than just avoiding that family history thus far . Thanks for this. It was a real challenge at first when I began keto because of all of the complicated macro counting etc I thought I had to do … now I don’t do that. For example I tried the apple cider vinegar thing but I had some severe digestive issues that I found out were not unheard of for some peeps because of the way apple cider vinegar works to slow down digestion in the gut.. my body just didn’t tolerate it, and so now I eat some fermented veggies or some balsamic on my food a couple of times a week and that takes care of still having benefits…

A question about going carnivore, if it is a complete human diet then why is it a good idea to take electrolytes?

Personally if I have less energy on a Keto diet I need to eat more fat & then I'm fine. If your energy is consistent throughout the day then don't worry. That's just what I do. -Mike

I don’t agree with the whole carbs vs net carbs. Fiber doesn’t get digested by the body, it goes through the digestive track and gets metabolized by the gut biome. I’ve always did net carbs and the weight comes off easily, I just make sure I eat clean Whole Foods, not processed crap! I also like to check my ketones, just because I use it for motivation. The scales aren’t real accurate, I like to know I’m burning fat. And I don’t want it too high, I want to make sure I’m burning stored fat rather than dietary fat. Whatever works for you, do it…

You don't agree but then go on to repeat what was said - "Whatever works for you, do it" Dr. Westman clearly says net carbs work well for some people, especially those who are not treating a clinical/serious medical issue. He also says while that works wonderfully for some, it does not work well for others. He compares net carbs to an OTC medication when others require prescriptions strength. Total carbs provide that. They insure just about everyone will be able to be in ketosis with a limit of 20 per day while 20 net carbs could be 50, 60 total carbs. That does not work for everyone. Especially those with medical issues (diabetes, epilepsy, chronic inflammation, PCOS, etc.) that need a a stronger approach, with fewer carbs. In addition, many people cannot achieve their goals counting net carbs because of the the grains, fillers, dairy, GI spiking sweeteners and substitutes that are often found in products that tout a low net carb total. "Dirty Keto" is no less effective than "Clean Keto" for both, reaching and maintaining ketosis. Processed foods are not a problem, they are a choice. Net carbs can be a problem for many people.

If you do not have to loose weight, net carbs are irrelevant, becauce fiber have also good benefits for health and also contributes to healthy calories (short chain fatty acids)
